Mr Sarkozy is urging other leaders to move quickly to give the former PM the powerful new role.
The news emerged as diplomatic sources revealed US President Barack Obama would be “happy” to see Mr Blair land the job.
Plans to anoint him at an EU summit in Brussels next week have been scuppered by Czech president Vaclav Klaus, due to his refusal to sign the Lisbon Treaty. But EU leaders are confident Mr Klaus will finally approve it by early next month.

That will actually be funny, since Blair is under and investigation for crimes against Humanity and so is the Bush Administration and now the Obama Administration is being investigated for Crimes against Humanity. Sarkozy changes his opinion on a daily basis. Yesterday he was saying Blair as President is not such a good idea.
The reality is: an unelected President of the EU is the equivalent of a monarchy, and with polls as high as 81% against Blair, he’s going to need an army to follow him around to protect him, because the people HATE him.

I’m in Europe, in Belgium. Blair is total foreigner to me, and a total foreigner to all other Europeans. Even his own Brits hate him. Making Blair president is like giving Obama the Nobel Peace Prize; it’s only mutual flattery among elitist hypocrits. The belgian government is despised by nearly everyone here, except a few bootlickers; there’s no way people will accept an unpopular foreigner as their leader.
