MURRAYVILLE, Georgia (CNN) — A few weeks before 13-year-old Jonathan King killed himself, he told his parents that his teachers had put him in “time-out.”

    • us news School Children Forced into Seclusion Cells

“We thought that meant go sit in the corner and be quiet for a few minutes,” Tina King said, tears washing her face as she remembered the child she called “our baby … a good kid.”

But time-out in the boy’s north Georgia special education school was spent in something akin to a prison cell — a concrete room latched from the outside, its tiny window obscured by a piece of paper.

Called a seclusion room, it’s where in November 2004, Jonathan hanged himself with a cord a teacher gave him to hold up his pants.

An attorney representing the school has denied any wrongdoing.

Seclusion rooms, sometimes called time-out rooms, are used across the nation, generally for special needs children. Critics say that along with the death of Jonathan, many mentally disabled and autistic children have been injured or traumatized.

    1. TXGIRL Says:

How in the hell did this poor mentally challenged, good kid figure out how to hang himself???????????

Why don’t I believe this one?

Who was recently at the school talking to the kids? What does the teacher/jailer teach the kids, suicide method?

    2. SteveOZ Says:

What the hell. It is just another “Solitary Confinement”. Do you know this crap is illegal in almost every other Country except USA. Hell it should be illegal. It’s just WRONG

    3. mush Says:

Good ol’ American public school system.

    4. Casual Observer Says:

This is not news either. The school system has a dollar value on every child who attends.. mentally capable or not. If a child has a menatl disorder to a degree necessaary there are schools that have literal “padded rooms”…

This is not new news..it has been around a while now.

Is this to add to the pending panic?

To the school system children = $$$$$$

      “No child left unbothered”

    5. Graft Says:

he probably asked too many questions, and the teachers got annoyed

    6. K Rhodes Says:

I think ur right Graft. My husband told me he got placed into a “behavioral disorder” because of drawing a political cartoon depicting the U.S. as a baby at the bottom of the well and corporations as a person rattling a baby toy up at the top of the well. I wouldn’t be surprised Graft, I wouldn’t past them.

    7. cuda Says:

What with all the poisons in the water and food is it a surprise there are so many special needs children? Also how about locking up some of these black hearted asshole communist teachers.

    8. cuda Says:

TXGRL good question. This teacher gives him a rope to hold up his pants. What happened to his belt? Another question would be,just how big around was this kid he needed enough rope to make a noose? Look at it,Isn’t that a lot of rope?

    9. cuda Says:

Another question would be,How the hell do you watch a kid with the window covered?
There is something definitely wrong with this picture.Reminds me of the guy who took off his shirt in jail and swallowed it choking to death,in the Dane county jail (Wisconsin) some years back. With his hands cuffed behind his back. I was in jail at the time and witnessed them beating this guy on the way to the hole.Reporter wanted to talk to me about it,But they refused to let them.
Again someone needs to spend the rest of their life in prison(or some people)In the hole.

    10. Casual Observer Says:

Cuda… You have not pointed to a single fact. If you went in to defend the situation this child died under talking about “poison food and water” (no matter how true YOU beleive it may be) because everyone else is eating from the same source. You would come off looking like a damn NUT… You have to choose your battles and fight with the right weapons…..

I am not even sure you can recognize a battle…. much less win one according to your response. GET WITH THE DAMN PROGRAM !!!!!!

    11. John Galt Says:

It is incredibly pathetic that the teacher cannot differentiate right from wrong. The teacher untrained and incapable of dealing with special needs children is unqualified to perform their duties and provide care and protection for those most vulnerable in their custody. Yet they have no personal liability, responsibility or accountability, nor does the school or administration.

After allowing mercury poisoned vaccines and a plethora of contaminates in our food chain to slowly destroy the lives of our children and others. Creating special needs children. This should be a wake up call for everyone.

Yet, for a moment imagine if this were your child, locked in a room by an incompetent alleged “teacher”, that gave them the instrument with which to inflict death upon themselves. What would you do?

      This makes me soooo angry.

Lock the staff and teacher in seclusion till for say 20-30 years or

Get a rope, tie a noose. Lock the teacher and the staff, one at a time, in the same room and help them.

If you have never been in solitary lock down you wouldnt understand.

    13. jdk Says:

I remember that, that was called ‘in-school suspention’. Funny how I end up commenting on Alex Jones’ comment board. lol.

    14. Belle de la Liberty Says:

This child was ‘diagnosed’ with depression and attention deficit hyperactive disorder as a 5 year old. I wonder how heavily drugged he was, and how much the drugs had to do with his suicidal tendencies and behavioral problems (aggression, poor impulse control and self harm are common side effects of psychiatric drugs used in juveniles and adolescents). I also wonder how heavily involved the school system was with his diagnosis and ‘treatment’.

How his parents could allow this to happen is beyond me. How do you send your child off to be practically raised by strangers and then not even be aware that they are abusing your child? How can you not see the symptoms of a disease in your child, let allow the diagnosis of that disease (and the treatment thereof) to stand? Why are so many parent willing to give away control over their children’s lives and upbringings like this?

The parents are quoted as saying that if they knew that this was how their child was being treated in school, they would have homeschooled him. IT WAS THEIR JOB TO KNOW. This boy is dead because everyone in his life failed him.

Our greatest responsibility is to our children. When people abdicate that responsibility, their children are the ones to suffer and die.

    15. Guns won't save the world! Says:

#11 I have been in lock down, I understand, they don’t. This article is too much, I can’t believe the level of sickness adult people in this nation have stooped to. No child should have to deal with solitary concrete rooms, they are for torture and nothing more. They should definitely lock the teacher, and anyone who has ever put a kid in one of these rooms up for a minimum of 3 months, that seems to be the magic number in my experience. 3 months would change the person, and depending on what they were thinking on about the 2nd day it would determine what they learn in there, but 3 months would definitely be long enough that we pull that person out and ask them “well now what do you think” and if they say it’s still alright, then hang them on the spot, if they sob and moan and can’t speak normally, then I’ll tell you it worked and you can pretty much say without a doubt that the person will never do that to a child again, I don’t know about 20-30 years man, that is too much.

You know I’m not for jail, or prison. That’s why I don’t favor prison for these stupid teachers, they need to be banished from the rest of us, just like the scriptures speak of. If they get their kicks off of torturing kids, then they should have their children taken away and be forced out of society, in fact 100% loneliness is what they deserve but that may be too cruel. But being among and around the rest of us should be illegal and if they try to sneak back in among the normal moral people then there should be stiff penalties, but people who can’t be nice to kids don’t deserve to be around kids.

Why is it that everything has to be the inverse of the what it seems today? the war on drugs brings in the drugs, the ones who are supposed to help and teach our kids, shove lies down their throats, and also torture and do all kinds of stupid worthless things to our kids? Aren’t these people supposed to be the most loving, most trust-worthy, most patient, most moral!!! Adults in our society? But instead what do we get? People who don’t think there is anything wrong with a jail cell in school! My teachers would’ve never put up with something like that, I don’t know what happened to this country but it is going to get what it deserves that I do know.

All you people who hurt kids, know this, your days are very limited, you are dead people walking, and the decision is right around the corner, you have no excuse, and in the day when you have to account for all your doings and the worthless words you’ve spoken, you will have no lawyer present, only shame. You’ve been warned, first in your heart when you first thought about taking the job, you were warned, that didn’t bother you, in the scriptures the messiah warned you not to mess with the kids or you’d be better off to have a very large stone tied around your neck and to be thrown into the ocean, that didn’t have any effect either. now you are about to be vaporized by nuclear heat, that doesn’t scare you or deter you, then you will face your maker and he will ask you what the hell were you doing? What was the plan that day? And you will have no answer but shame.

I hate death and violence, but these people just won’t get off my planet, so my father in heaven is going to allow them to kill themselves, I won’t miss them, in fact good riddens, you stink you damn child abusers and we don’t want your smell among us anymore, kill yourselves before that day, do us a favor all you abusive teachers, just kill yourselves please!! PLEASE!!

    16. Shannon Says:

I’m sure all can understand human thinking. If someone is not as healthy, upright, right thinking, as good looking as YOU; they are less than YOU and can be treated less valuable than YOU. Think of all the people YOU have neglected or rejected just because of one litle thing about them that YOU didn’t like. So the accomodations will be less, according to how much less YOU think they deserve. Think of your own pier group that YOU approve of, till one of them makes a mistake.

    17. Liberty Girl Says:

I help care for two Autistic children and when we take them to school, the school acts as if they do not want us there. The day the oldest of the two children started school, they met us at the door and took him from the mom and would not let her enter. The child immediately had a melt down and laid on the floor in front of the door. The teacher and aide waved us away as if saying goodbye while the child lay on the floor watching us screaming for his mother. THis happened two more times until the mother could not handle it anymore and told the school she refused to bring the child back unless they found a way to transition him.

This kind of treatment of children with special needs goes on all the time because they want to teach the children to conform to their rules. THey act as if the children don’t have feelings and when parents are not allowed in the classroom, or if they are allowed to bring your child to the class room they immediately start saying good bye and wave you away. This leaves the parent feeling like they are not being respected as a parent. The bus drivers are not trained and are changed frequently. THey do not know how to handle these children. The mother refuses to allow her children to ride the bus and I don’t blame her. I have seen these children hauled out into the hall and literally dumped on the floor when they were being disruptive. THis is what they don’t want parents to see. THat is what I was told by a teacher that was unemployed from that same kind of job. THe aides are given jobs because they hire first from within and they are ex-lunchroom moms. The aides are sent to short seminars on Autism and that makes them ‘trained’. The mom has a right to be suspicious and extra cautious…the children she has are high function and one can speak well and the other is just beginning too be able to have conversation.

I have seen a seclusion room in a childrens home the floors have floor pads on them and the walls have floor pads hanging on them and the door is always left open and someone sits outside, but this is for normal children and not children with special needs. When the child can calm down and talk about what they did wrong they are let out. Children with special needs often times can’t express there feelings or their anger. Parents need to have more “transparency” concerning there children. THey should be able to see…and check up on these special needs children. Some schools have camera’s where the parent can get on line from home or work and watch what is going on in the classrooms. This could also be a learning experience for the parents to see some things they might want to try at home These special ed teachers are only human and can lose patience and really should have oversite. The aides should be hired based on the amount of previous experience with these children. The aides that have worked with the parents in their homes have been trained by behavior therapists and understand the home inviroment which can also affect what causes the meltdowns in schools….Schools need to consider other avenue’s for finding aides for these children.

We are a Truly “SICK SOCIETY” with no spiritual compass.

    19. .kom Says:

just finished writing a paper on Social Darwinism, and i hear about this? Damn this came out too late. could have included the living conditions of mentally retarded patients in American schools

    20. Preacher Says:

I install signs in new schools here in Florida. All the new schools have these prison cell time out rooms.

    21. lionheart Says:

The more you get away from the MSM, the more you realise we live in a sick society. Guess where the majority of this sickness resides…… GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES!

    22. WeeBee Says:

I don’t know how it is in other states, but where I live students with physical, mental & emotional “challenges” are “mainstreamed” [placed into regular classrooms]. The Special Education program still remains but is now filled with students with disclipline problems [the classic, violent problem children]. Teachers in the regular classes do not have the time, training or patience to handle SEVERAL disabled students in their classroom at the same time. So they go for the quick fix to “maintain order”. But this “quick fix” is often damaging to the disabled student. THE BOTTOM LINE, the system is horribly broken. All parents that care about their kids should pull them from public school, enroll them in a charter/private school or homeschool & stop paying school taxes. When enough parents QUIT PAYING THE TAXES the officials will adderess the broken system.

    23. JWfearman Says:

my wife has 7 RTI children of various levels. they require RTI 3 children to have 30 min a day spent one on one with them… She has 3. The rest are RTI 2 which requires 20 mn 4 times a week. That is almost 13 hrs of one on one time in a week while trying to maintain a class of 27 second graders! Meanwhile, here in Florida, they nixed the teachers yearly pay increase. Teachers are overworked and unnderpayed and not only do the teachers and their family suffer. But the kids suffer the most.

      This story is appalling.

    24. DWZA Says:

I swear to god if this was my kid, vengeance would be mine, and they would have to put me in one of those fuckin cells.

    25. GetReal Says:

Let’s be real. Retards going to school will probably learn nothing, and maybe after 12 years they might learn to shop (which in some schools the government actually hands over money for them to go out and try to shop and actually buy things: wyoming), but most of them will never be able to self-sustain. Get real, they shouldn’t be in school at all and the tax payer should not be shelling out tons of money for high needs programs, teachers and buildings. They parents should be responsible for them and if they want to send them to a baby sitter who won’t put them in a cell, go find one and pay for it yourself. Society would be better off if the same wasted funds were put towards helping advanced kids and the smart ones get better teachers and into college courses sooner.

    26. speed Says:

I AM SO VERY AGAINST THIS SORT OF THING

    27. David K Says:

It’s stuff like that made me start a non profit group (People Ending Discrimination On Looks – http://www.pedolgroup.com )

Nowadays, the school faculty is more of a bully to kids than anything Nelson, Jimbo, Dolph, & Kearney ever did on the Simpsons. While the real bullies are beating up kids, the staff looks for who is giving out cough drops, using plastic knives, and who has on socks with two different colors! The same staff will tell you it is the law to make kids take vaccines.

    28. Tracy Says:

Getreal, I certainly hope you have not had the misfortune to reproduce because you are an absolute embicile. I would pity any child in your care. I suppose only perfect little blonde blue-eyed Hitler-like youth would pass your standards.

    29. Peter Says:

Parents who send mentally handicapped children to be educated by others, (WHO COULDN’T POSSIBLY CARE LESS) get what they deserve.

Your retarded child will be abused, tortured, and neglected by paid workers who are only there for the paycheck.

Face it. Nobody shows up for anything but the paycheck, and no one wants to work with a mental patient. If you don’t care about the well being of your retarded child, then by all means send them to school, so they can be secretly beaten, ignored, abused, etc.. etc.. etc.. etc.. AT least you can have a normal life for a few hours out of the day right? And who cares if they’re abused, they are mentally bankrupt anyway. What’s left to damage?

Hell we should just euthanize them right off the bat and solve everyones problem from the get go! (Man its sick how many people would actually be happy with such a decision, just not outwardly.)

People, its normal to want normal children, and normal to not want to care for abnormal children. We are an animalistic species, and our instinct to abandon the weak is strong. But there is more to us than simply animal instinct people….

    30. vidaliasweet Says:

“Jonathan hanged himself with a cord a teacher gave him to hold up his pants.” WTF? How big were his pants? Unbelievable on so many levels!

    31. roger Says:

full criminal investigation, go after the death penalty for the person that gave him the cord and put him in the room. I don’t think that the kid hung himself either. these people will burn in hell.

    32. Virginia Says:

I read a similar story earlier this month where a teacher was in the room with 12 year old autistic girl was. She had to sit perfectly still for 5 minutes straight to get out of the room (no small feat for an autistic or adhd child). This girl was in there for hours with a teacher and not allowed to go to the bathroom and hence was forced to urinate on herself in front of the teacher. I WILL NOT PUT MY CHILDREN IN PS TO DEAL WITH THIS CRAP. I’m a single mom and if I can find the time and afford to homeschool with minor sacrifices so can most moms. I get $60 CS for the oldest a month (which is rarely paid) and nothing for the younger 2. I basically do it all so can you.

    33. Neocon Narc Says:

This is a very sad article.
The fragile mind of a child cannot comprehend that mistakes happen and we should learn from them.
I can see how it would affect them mentally.

The use of force on children is just flat wrong. You must talk to them or else they won’t understand.
I can see how sending a child to his room for time-out can be more comfortable and not mentally damaging because it is where they sleep.

But when you cage an animal or child in a room they do not want to be in. It is torture.
I hope the parents take legal action.

    34. Jason Sieckmann Says:

I could not have had it more with this kind of bullshit. As soon as I read this, I went back over to my site, and wrote an article on this.

It’s one thing to punish adults that have broken the law; but to treat children like animals because they act out in school systems that already don’t work, and don’t prepare kids for the real world is absolutely too horrible.

The only way out of this sort of thing is to end public education.

      My article is here: http://mediacondom.com/?p=450

    35. RasChris Says:

    40. websuspect Says:

      Solitary Confinement.

    41. SnowCone Says:

This makes me sick to my stomach. This kind of treatment is beyond reproach, no child should ever even have to think about this kind of shit, no less have it held over his head like a sword of damocles. The billious bastards who did this should be flogged with 20 lashes each with a good old fashioned Roman Flagrum, then crucified in public and their filthy bodies left to rot on the cross. That would be about an appropriate punishment. Line the roads with the crosses of these asshats and their new world order masters.

    42. HillbillyJihad&TheBubbaLiberationFront Says:

    43. HillbillyJihad&TheBubbaLiberationFront Says:

And one more thing…I googled this school district just now and Lo’ and Behold…I discover that Georgia’s Special Ed. schools are called, GET THIS…”PSYCO-EDUCATION” schools!!! That’s what princpal stated at one of the schools I contacted. ALEX put this shit out further bro’!!! PSYCHO-EDUCATION SCHOOLS folks, WTF OVER??? I’m gonna’ Thermally Expand on this and I’ll back to y’all!!! “All ‘HAIL’ Thermal Expansion!!!”

    46. shane banta Says:

My question is what types of mental anguish, confusion or perhaps emotion torture was happening to this 13yr. old child that he up and decides to hang himself, over a TIME-OUT? What kind of teacher would give a kid a cord, where is his belt? I suspect FOWL-PLAY!!!!!! I would investigate who had most contact with this boy, within the school.

    47. RasChris Says:

I am sure that the teacher got a “Good Job, and a pat on the back” BEHIND CLOSED DOORS..
They will be punished for this crime

    48. Casual Observer Says:

I grew up in GA and left in the mid 1970s and returned in 2000. My daughter started school and I had a neighbor who was a school teacher before I moved to a rural area. The area is “small town” where you would think quality was an issue in school.

I have rraised my child alone since birth and she is very intelligent and i homeschool. i was involved with the school initially and enrolled her in the “GVT school system” and while I saw nothing that was close to this I saw the way the system was operatiing and knew that i didn’t want my child to be influenced by an apathetic crowd of people..I know people who work in the school system who would not see anything wrong with how their children are being taught before their eyes on a daily basis. Oddly enough the adults seem to be like most have posted on here..passive, apathetic, accept anything as it is and talk about it secretly types(as long as it isn’t THEIR child).

I pulled my child out of the school system and they attempted to try all kinds of tricks using the laws as if I couldn’t read them myself.

My child will never be part of this type of system as long as I am alive. I do worry about the world she will have to adapt to later on in life KNOWING that it is not a “normal world’ as humans should know it.

GA is like the 3rd or 4th from the bottom of the states as far as education ratings go.. That is enough for me to know the system failed. I have presented this information as a basis for homeschooling to the school staff and they act like they haven’t heard that and it can’t be true…. if it even matters at al. The most important concern of theirs is mainating a job as an “educator’ and the security that comes with it.

    49. stasisofseasons Says:

Yeah lets drug up our children with questionable drugs, then feed them poisions and let them wash the poisions down with water that has yet more poision in it. Then when they missbehave or do or say something we don’t like (because of the brain damage caused by such things) lets go ahead and lock them in a closet with ropes long enough to hang themselves…. i guess children are the future these sick fucks want.

    50. stasisofseasons Says:

oh and if they give another child a cough drop lets send them away for drug dealing.

    51. CantLiveOnHope Says:

I looked up the actual article from CNN – here is an exert..

” The Alpine Program’s attorney, Phil Hartley, said Jonathan’s actions leading up to his suicide did not suggest the boy was “serious” about killing himself. Jonathan’s actions were an “effort to get attention,” Hartley said.

“This is a program designed for students with severe emotional disabilities and problems,” he said. “It is a program which frequently deals with students who use various methods of getting attention, avoiding work.”"

Is this what our schools think about children who have mental/emotional disorders? They are just out for attention to avoid school work? Outrageous.

    52. rosiechameleon Says:

My child went to a school that put him in a “time-out” room. When he harmed himself by slamming his head into the wall, they padded the room. He was misdiagnosed and on a number of meds. He was also grieving the recent death of his father (”suicide by cop”). I was heavily medicated as well and didn’t know what to do. We moved to a different school district, changed doctors, and he was diagnosed with Asperger’s (which can be helped greatly with an organic diet).
The school he goes to now does not use a “time-out” room, they have knowledge of Asperger’s and they have helped us greatly to develop an education plan that works for our son. I’m happy to report that I am now an informed parent and understand that knowledge is power! We are no longer victims, I will do whatever it takes to insur my child is as safe as possible at school, we can hold schools accountable and help them to find more effective ways to address these issues!

    53. Marcia Says:

Everyone of the people involved from the top to the bottom should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
They are CRIMINALS and should go to jail for a long long time!
