School Shooting Drill Terrifies Unknowing Teachers

About 50 teachers at a New Jersey school experienced a terrifying moment when a shooting rampage turned out to be a drill, but the teachers didn’t know it.

It happened Aug. 28 at the Phillipsburg New Jersey Early Learning Center.
A man burst into the library and started shooting. But the gun didn’t have any bullets, just blanks.
Teachers took cover under child-sized tables, crying and trembling.
“People are crying. The girl next to me is trembling and shaking. You heard people crying. You heard other people praying. It was pretty dramatic,” one teacher said.
The school district put the drill in place to test staff readiness.
The Phillipsburg School Board heard from angry teachers and parents Monday night.
The board is reviewing the drill.

This angers me as i think if this was subjected to my kids and i feel sorry for those kids/teachers.
There is no good that can come from drills of this type, and why would they not tell anyone.
What if a teacher had a heart attack or a hero kills gunman????

To DIY – I know several teachers in my area who are also commissioned law enforcement officers that carry weapons in school and they would have killed the “shooter.” This was very stupid.

You’ve got the right idea. I watched a documentary on the Sundance channel about people living out on a mesa in New Mexico. Unfortunately, they were all more or less people with severe problems, addicted to drugs, and not very well educated concerning freedom, their constitution (in which they all kept referring to our Constitutional Republic as a “Democracy”) or the brainwashing of the people via the mass media which is controlled by the Super-Elite.
There were a few Gulf war vets living there (Gulf War I) who had no idea that 911 was an inside job, so to speak, and talked about U.S. firepower and how “we” should slaughter those living in the Middle east so they won’t “never attack the U.S. again.” Yet in just another breath, the same vet talks about our freedoms?
The People live out there with no running water, electrical power (from the grid), except through solar arrays and rechargeable banks of batteries (at least a few of the more organized in the community) but even these are poorly constructed, not even making up 10% of their combined power.. The idea is solid but their community, in my opinion, is plagued by the personal problems of those living there. The last thing you need or want is unstable people when living in some sort of off-grid community.
They don’t own the land, it is public land and anyone can show up at anytime to either hassle or join the community. The police burned down a man’s house because of a suspected marijuana grow & sell operation (which, when translated, means: A guy growing a very safe plant and trading with his neighbors, no harm, no foul.) They obtained no warrant and killed some eleven of his dogs, one only remains after the attack on his home by authorities.
These people, even though ragged and poorly organized, have the right to pursue a free life, regardless if other people do not agree with it, especially the Government. They handle all problems that arise on the mesa without calling in the police. They handle things in their own way, very fairly, and justice seems better served for their efforts. Especially if you consider that most people incarcerated in the U.S. were convicted of victimless crimes, hurting no other people except maybe themselves.
Most of the people on the mesa are armed, from six shooter to rifles. They have used them in the past and vowed they would use them in the future if the need arouse. This kind of language generally scares people unfamiliar with the ways of off grid communities and how they prefer to police themselves, rather then calling the government’s jack booted thugs. They hold a council of elders and only come together when something or someone is troubling the community. The rules are easy to follow, or rule, since it comes down to “The Golden Rule”; Treat others as you would like to be treated, love others as you love yourself, etc.
The Golden rule covers the most common crimes people tend to commit, stealing being a big No, No. Overall it was a very interesting documentary . The idea is a good one and people can easily prosper off-grid even though life on the mesa was rather poor. What these people lacked in even the basic essentials, whether it be soap, food, water, etc., their feeling of freedom and independence made up for their poor living conditions.
If some intelligent people got together, with the proper resource and a good piece of land, or even if they bought adjoining plots of land, they could live quite a good life with minimal government interference in their lives. You band together and make a covenant (contract) with the people in your community. You barter among each other, help each other out when need arises, etc. Everyone bands together for security (if the law shows up, armed, everyone in the community shows up, armed, though not in a threatening manner, in order to protect each other from the tyranny that has been growing like a cancer within our country.
Peace and freedom should be the maxim everyone in these communities live by.

just yesterday 8/16/08 my childrens school was put into “Lock Down” status. The Superintendent of the school sent home a letter that says “lock down” status lasted 10-15 minutes and HAD to happen because “The sheriffs were in pursuit of a youth who chose to run onto our campus as a means of escape. He was apprehended while on our property” the letter goes on to say.. “At no time was there an attempt by the individual to enter any of our buildings. Some children at the elementary school were out for recess and did observe the foot chase down the campus path to the middle/high school. They were immediately directed to enter the school as per our established procedures. While this event was extremely unfortunate, of utmost importance is that out students and staff are safe.” My children did not see it, but were told to get to the back of theie rooms, the teachers then locked the doors and covered the windows near the doors with paper, telling the children “its so bad guys can’t see in”. out of space …I’ll post another comment………..

Ok, I’m sure this youth was running from the court house which is just a few blocks from the school. Most likely one of those teens that don’t want to be complacent, about to be taken from his home..have his rights ripped right out from under him. All because he wont go to school or he smokes pot, or what ever the case is. I bet in the end he was just standing up for what he believes in… isnt that what we are supposed to do??
I feel my children were never in any danger yesterday, there should be fire drills, maybe even lock downs. but I really feel that my kids were subjected to this for no other reason then to either scare all of us or make us think they can really handle an emergency.
My husband and I were 16 and 17 when our first daughter was born. During the first few months of pregnancy we were in and out of the very court I mentioned because my husband wanted to quit school and go to GED classes. Court was going to ship him off to foster care AGAIN. My being pregnant didnt change anything, they were going to send me and the baby away too. (I was already out and free from school..only by the skin of my teeth). Anyway it wasnt untill we married that they backed off. So I can say that this kid was PROBABLY doing the RIGHT thing by running!

How pathetic, and very deranged. Obviously sadists thought this one up. It’s a complete shame because the next time ( god forbid) the faculty will think it’s a drill and not protect the children. And then it will be a “never cry wolf” situation.
It did not specify “fact” whether there were classes going on at the time, because it never said anything other than teachers under desk crying. Nothing about what they did to save children to the best of their ability which is what they are supposed to do before they themselves hide under a desk.
I don’t blame anyone for being angry they have the right. It’s a disgusting act.

I have to agree that this is a good thing, some will not agree but well fear can also be good, now they understand what it feels like, and with better training our teachers can react. They will know how to respond better to this type of situation.
I say train the teachers in firearms, hand to hand combat, and let them carry while on property. that way they can take our the person coming in shooting. Sure a few kids may die, but in war there are exceptable losses. The Brits do not put up with terrorists, and when a plane is highjacked, well there will be losses, no talk but ction.
Hell if a kid pulls a gun in school, threatening anyone then shoot the kid.
If someone breaks into you house kill them where they stand, we need to arm and train the people.

Everyone alive in a populated area has saw a car accident.. they have seen the damage, they know the feeling of loss..JUST seeing it happen to someone else… You have seen them on TV..
I have yet to see anyone REHEARSE a car accident.. You can imagine all you want about who would do what when and where.. You can take a limited amount of precautions…

I have counseled numerous people who have been through real violent events. From the limited information presented I can tell you these people will suffer PTSD due to this “Drill”. What kind of dumb ass would put other human beings through a terrible life altering event such as this? Many of the damaged people are children. How can the people of this school system ever believe their school administrators have the best interest of their children at heart? I can hardly believe the level of evil and heartlessness some people have toward other living things.
We have no less than evil monsters running the government at all levels. Evil has worked its way into government from the local level to the highest level of government in our country. It is time to throw the bums out and arrest and prosecute those who have committed high crimes and misdemeanors in violation of the laws of our country. There is little doubt among the majority of the people we have traitors and criminals leading our country into the abyss at all levels.

how are unarmed school teachers going to ready themselves against a man with a gun? should they throw books at the shooter? have they been being trained to dodge bullets ‘Matrix’ style? they can do all the shooter drills they want, but there’s no way a simple school teacher is going to be able to ready themselves against a reign of bullets and a wave of pure terror engulfing them and the school children. and also, why are they doing these horrible and uneffective drills at an early learning center? don’t most school shootings get carried out by students themselves? have there been many school shootings at early learning centers carried out by grown men? this drill needs to be pushed into a deep dark chasm and forgotten.

Wow, that’s just sick. What if someone had a heart attack, or did fight back (like they should)? If you get close enough to a gun, even though it is firing blanks, it will blow a hole right through your head, just like your head was the bullet being fired! Those Aholes up there that orchestrated/took part/planned this travesty, they need to do some serious time in prison.
What would such a “drill” show you? We all know what people do during these situations (unless they have a gun)- they die horribly, and in large numbers. There’s not any way to avoid it, except to execute the shooter(s) with precise counter fire. The only real way to deal with an armed attack is with an armed defense (counter attack).

If I were an armed teacher, I wouldhave fired back with real bullets. I bet it is a disarmament zone, like 99% of schools, and therefore the terrorist knew they wouldn’t be fired on in defense. How fortunate for the lone shooter that no-one had a backbone and he didn’t get jumped/beaten down. Try that in my old school where many students concealed items on their person for protection against unchecked gang violence. He would not have had such an easy scare. I imagine it helped that the “Readiness Drill” was run at an early learning center and not a junior high or high school where older students are a bit more able (or likely) to defend themselves. Even a pencil can be a defensive weapon.. and there are a lot of pencil wielding students in a school. This simply shows how scared to react we the people are. Even in situations which threaten our lives!

This is absolutely sick. Totally evil. You can’t be doing this kinda sh*t, even if everyone knew beforehand, you can’t be doing this. There’s NO REASON. This is all about mind games, psychological warfare, teaching citizens that they’re weak, helpless slaves. And the whole idea of having a “drill” for this kinda stuff is beyond retarded. It’s like having a drill for when lightning strikes you in the face. The only way you can “prepare” for this kind of stuff is to be alert and to be armed. Which by the way, if I was armed and this goon crashed through my classroom and started terrorizing everyone, with a loaded gun pointed at innocent people, my gut reaction would be to take that son of a bitch down. And in this situation that would mean possibly killing an “innocent” individual. That’s why you don’t play around with this kind of stuff. PERIOD. It doesn’t f*cking matter if you’re doing some bogus “drill,” if you threaten me with a loaded gun, leading me to believe that my life is in danger, you better bloody believe that I’m gonna fight back to the death if necessary. I’d be interested in hearing just what teacher preparedness this drill was supposed to test. I mean, are they looking at how fast teachers can dive under tables? Teachers have no means to meet a threat like this so what is there to test? I think this drill was to instill a sense of dread and terror. It was, in itself, terrorism. It accomplished the same result as the real thing, only without the dead people. Maybe that’s it: PC terrorism – without any blood.

I agree with Tristan #96. I would also like to add that this test was at the expense of these children!? I’m pretty sure AT LEAST one or two of these kids will be scared for life over this “test”.
