DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Somali pirates hijacked a supertanker off the Kenyan coast, seizing the Saudi-owned ship loaded with crude and its 25-member crew, the U.S. navy said Monday.

Lt. Nathan Christensen, a spokesman for the U.S. navy’s 5th Fleet, said the pirates hijacked the Sirius Star — a newly commissioned ship owned by Saudi oil company Aramco — 830 kilometres southeast of Mombasa, Kenya.
He said the pirates were taking the ship to a Somali port of Eyl where hijacked vessels are often held.
Somali pirates have seized several ships off the Horn of Africa coast in the past week, but the latest hijacking — of a tanker the size of an aircraft carrier — marked a dramatic escalation.
The pirates are trained fighters, often dressed in military fatigues, using speedboats equipped with satellite phones and GPS equipment. They are typically armed with automatic weapons, anti-tank rockets launchers and various types of grenades.
The 330-metre tanker seized Saturday can carry about two million barrels of oil.
Christensen said the Sirius Star was carrying crude at the time of hijacking, but he did know how much. He also had no details about where the ship was sailing from and where it was headed.

Let the Saudis take the ship back – or alternatively let our Navy do it, keep the oil and send a large bill to the Saudis. Pirates should be executed immediately – no trial needed. Stick a message on each pirate’s head – Stay off the seas – and drop them on Somalia. Should do the trick.

There is no such thing as good or evil. The only REAL sides in any conflict are the benefactors and those who are not. Think about, so many of us live in America, a country opened up by genocide and religious oppression. We (those that live on the American continents) are the benefactors of that genocide. I’m not saying I hate any specific country, I could really care less. But people on this site love to throw around words like evil, good, god, satan, etc. but I guess that the way things go… cut and dry.
These pirates are not good people. Nor are they bad. They are desperate. The country they used to have had been torn to pieces by foreign nations and native warlords. You’d probably resort to the same activities, maybe not pirating, if you were left with nothing.

I am just amazed at the pirates abilities to overcome such a big ship.
The height from water to top would require the boat to have ladders lowered.
The hull is thick enough to handle a grenade launcher or rocket.
Maybe not handle a laser guided tank buster.

It’s real simple. If a ship speeds Your way uninvited in that kind of area, they should get some 30 mm slugs in their speed boats till nothing is left floating.
I can’t imagine operating in any region without arms on my ship. I would not let them anywhere near me if I were a Captain of such a ship.
I suspect it is also possible that the people raiding those ships are not who we think they are. It could be actors/mercs making it look like Somalia is to blame, in order to justify attacks on Somalia, to steal their oil…..
I know if I were an insurer of those ships, I would be placing my own guards on a few tankers till I got the attackers “educated”

I’m tempted to call this as a False Flag op to get into Africa, but it seems to early, and while the ship may have been 3 times the size of an aircraft carrier, with only 2 dozen sailors aboard, there has to be one hell of a blind spot, so totally feasible.
Most of these “pirates” (patriots) are old seadogs and militants, so weapons and seafaring/shipboarding would be skills that they would definitely have, over the past few months they have had a couple of ships carrying armaments in their possession, so lifting a couple crates of RPGs and AK74s wouldn’t be too hard.
Kudos to them, this was one helluva haul.

Navy Commander Jane Campbell of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet says the 26,000-ton bulk cargo carrier was attacked Tuesday in the Gulf of Aden.
She says the ship was flying a Hong Kong flag but is operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.
The status of the crew or its cargo were not known. Campbell says the ship is likely heading toward an anchorage site off the Somali coast.
The ship’s name or other details were not immediately known.

Brandnew ship latest technology and a trained crew. Owned by Suadies this action doesnt make sense to successfully occur. Scale of this would most definitly hit the heart of the oil cartels and action would most definitly occur why would idiot samolian pirates do such a large endeveor when you i know Navy Seals and Special Forces were developed for this type of mission and my question is why havent they retaken it within a 48 hr period this only means there allowing the incident. Effects i supose would be 1 super tanker not shipping oil and if you do ur math & reaserch the World suppliers are limited, taking a ship out would drive up oil prices and creat a reason under this war on terror to re-enter somolia and block the chinese infiltration if you dont know china been brokering major deals with Africa in that region this would allow U.S. green light under war on terror’s objective to enter the area and run a campaign in name of terrism eradication. Answers to stupid questions…
The Ship is 3 times the size of an aircraft carrier.
The Ship was full of oil, lowering the ship into the water for easier bording.
The value for the hijackers is in ransom of the crew, not the oil.
Thats the jist of the news accounts, belief is another story.

…we behold and hang on to every word of our ‘brain and thought’ machine, that usually has a flat screen to prevent glare and stands like a thing to be worshipped in the corner of our rooms.
One of the most revolutionary actions we can take is to stop watching this mind numbing repetative virtual master and take a little time just to think for ourselves, read between the lines and wake up!

The Horn OF AFRICA has been used by many countries in the past to ship goods without paying fees to the Somalian people. The Pirates have gone on a rampage lately hijacking a Ukranian bound ship and now this oil tanker. Foreign countries not only use the HORN OF AFRICA to ship goods without paying, they often DUMP excess products into the sea and even fish in the Somalian seas without paying a dime. If I was a somalian I’D be pretty pissed too.
