Taliban now encircle Kabul

The Taliban now have a presence in nearly three-quarters of Afghanistan, and are beginning to encircle its capital, Kabul, according to a new thinktank report.
According to the report, the Taliban hold a permanent presence in 72 percent of Afghanistan, though Hamid Karzai’s Afghan government says the figures “aren’t credible.”

The Paris-based International Council on Security and Development, which has offices in Afghanistan, says that Taliban fighters have advanced from the south of the country and now carry out regular attacks in the west and northwest.
In many places in the south, they hold power normally associated with a government, the Council says.
“While the international community’s prospects in Afghanistan have never been bleaker, the Taliban has been experiencing a renaissance that has gained momentum since 2005,” the report said. “The West is in genuine danger of losing Afghanistan.”
President-elect Barack Obama says he’ll deploy tens of thousands of troops to the war-riddled country, which served as one of the US-Soviet battlegrounds during the cold war. America has had a troubled history in the poor, mountainous nation, where they once supported Osama Bin Laden against the Russians.
Currently, the US has 34,000 boots on the ground. The Pentagon plans 20,000 replacement troops for 2009.
While the Taliban were in power, Afghanistan’s poppy crop — which is used to make heroin — was effectively wiped out. The country now supplies most of Europe’s opium.

Yeah? surprise, surprise. No foreign force has ever successfully occupied Afghanistan, whatever its pretence for being there. Unfortunately, too many people were too busy sucking up every nickel they could swindle out of Afghanistan to construct a national governemtn which was both acceptable to Afghans and convertible to a wholly Afghan government and necessary Afghan technicians, police, soldiers and so forth. Obama will be willing to shovel another 20,000 of somebody else’s kids/brothers/husbands/dads into Stalingrad – - – why not? He can always go back to Kenya , so long as he behaves himself like a good little subject of HM the Ole Mop Squeezer.

Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires for a reason. America may or may not be falling by design – I’m not sure one way or the other. I think they would have liked to have had a pipeline going through a subjugated Afghanistan by now, thus isolating Iran. And I think they would have liked to have kept Musharraf in office in Pakistan.
Afghanistan is not Iraq. Iraq was semi-centralized. You have your tribes and your cities off doing their own things (Fullujah, but no more) but for the most part people depended on the government and the police for many things. When you conquer a country like that its just a matter of time before you get people to give in. Afghanistan on the other hand – you would have to literally have guns in every village, every town, every valley – to hold it. They don’t need the central government – there really is no central government.
That’s why I tell people – take the Afghans as an example, add technology to their fierce independence and you have a real recipe for revolution no power can stop. But if you depend on the municipality for water, Walmart for food, your local power company for electricity – freedom fighters be damned, they will get the majority of the people to turn on you so they can get their comforts back.
