Taliban vow to resist US surge in Afghanistan
December 2, 2009
The Taliban vows to boost attacks against the US forces in Afghanistan, following Barack Obama’s pledge to deploy thousands more troops to the war-torn country.
Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahamdi said in a statement on Wednesday that such moves would “provoke stronger resistance.”
“Obama will witness lots of coffins heading to America from Afghanistan,” AFP quoted Ahamdi as saying.
[efoods]The statement also emphasized that the Americans would face the same fate as the Soviet troops when they retreated in defeat in the 1980s.
“This is a colonizing strategy which is securing the colonizing interests of American investors, and it shows that America has dirty plans not only for Afghanistan but for the region,” the statement read.
“They will withdraw shamefully,” it reiterated. “They cannot achieve their hopes and goals.”
The Taliban’s defiant stance comes a day after Obama and his NATO allies pledged to dispatch at least 35,000 more troops to Afghanistan to end the eight-year long conflict there.
Although nearly 110,000 foreign troops are currently fighting the Taliban militants in Afghanistan, they have not yet succeeded in establishing stability in the country.
The Taliban were ‘officially’ ousted from Afghanistan following the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.
More than 900 US soldiers have died in Afghanistan since the war began there eight years ago.
Observers, however, believe that the statement, supposedly issued by the Taliban, does not contain the type of wording typically used by the militant group. They suggest that such declarations are manufactured by the British so that any criticism of the troop surge can be condemned as ‘in-line with the Taliban.’
