Ted Turner Repeats Call For Population Curb

Billionaire Globalist Ted Turner, who earlier this month predicted that global warming would eventually lead to cannibalism, has repeated his call to curb population growth, claiming that disappearing farmland will cause food riots, despite the fact that Turner himself is behind the push to grow corn-based ethanol, an industry the UN has blamed for food shortages and increased poverty.
“There are a lot of different problems being caused by an ever-increasing number of people in a finite-sized world,” Turner told CNBC’s Bob Pisani. “The resources of the planet just can’t keep up with the demand and I’m afraid this going to be more commonplace. I’m afraid we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg. It’s very complicated I do want to say.”
“We’ve had warnings for a number of years,” Turner said. “Grain stocks have been dropping every year for the last 10 years or pretty close to that – the reserves. And, the environment in so many different areas is being – the pressure being put on it by the ever-increasing number of people and the number of people using more stuff and more energy – that’s what ‘s leading to global climate change and the over-fishing of the oceans," he added.
Turner cited increased vehicle usage as a reason for disappearing farmland.
“Agriculture is complicated anyway. For instance – China adds more cars, they need more roads and the only place to put more roads in China is over farmland. So you lose farmland as you increase development. We’re doing it even here in the United States.”

However, Turner failed to acknowledge the fact that one of the main reasons behind food shortages is global demand for biofuels, an industry that Turner has vigorously promoted and publicly supported in a 2006 WTO speech.
As the UN warned last year, "The global rush to switch from oil to energy derived from plants will drive deforestation, push small farmers off the land and lead to serious food shortages and increased poverty unless carefully managed".
Earlier this month, Turner caused shockwaves when he stated that inaction on global warming “will be catastrophic” and those who don’t die “will be cannibals.”
"We’re too many people; that’s why we have global warming," he said. "Too many people are using too much stuff," adding that "on a voluntary basis, everybody in the world’s got to pledge to themselves that one or two children is it."
Turner himself failed to live up to such a pledge, having fathered five children, but continues to lecture the rest of us on how we should limit our procreation.
Some would find Turner’s zeal to "thin" the human population hard to reconcile with his leadership of a UN initiative to combat malaria.
When one considers Turner’s past comments about the supposed need to drastically cut world population levels by up to 95%, his involvement in any kind of program run under the guise of "improving health" in third world countries should be examined with severe caution.
"A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal," Turner stated in 1996.
As the Baltimore Sun reported, "Most of [Ted Turner's first donation to the United Nations Foundation of] $22 million went to programs that seek to stall population growth."

I agree with Ted. He makes a lot of sense. I have been saying for years that the world is over populated and if everyone stuck to two children at most then the population would fall gradually.
China have had to have one child per couple to prevent over population destroying their country.
The population was around one billion in 1945 and is now five to six billion.
55 million people died in WW2. That didn’t even dent the population growth and so WW3 probably wont do the trick either.
The best solution is acceptable morally. Limit to two children per couple.
It is worth noting that one death of an American is worth 25 deaths in Africa in terms of benefit to the environment due to the huge consumption by Americans.
America used to live in harmony with nature but then Columbus found it.
People are generally inconsiderate towards their environment. Global warming is sometimes a diversion from more urgent environmental concers about habitat loss.
An one world government could sort it out by taxing rainforest timber out ot the reach of greedy American consumers that do not care about the species of the forests.
I’m with the plants and animals on this one.
We had the moral upper hand to invade Iraq to save people from murder by Hussein and it went wrong due to the Iraqis starting a jihad.
But why is it moral to save and increase the human population?

I don’t agree with depopulation but I do agree with the irresponsibility of people in their use of natural resources and concern for other inhabitants of this planet. The dust bowl happened becasue of deforestation. Many of the natural forest in North America have been reduce to tiny patches of green while the rest is farmland. I disagree that somehow God made this world for us and we can do with it what we want no matter how damaging. I’m more of a we are the caretakers of this planet and we really messed up the garden. I’m thinking forget the yard and grass and mowing. Plant every inch of it with trees to try and get back some green. Also plant fruits and vegetables in the yard instead of decorative trees. Government pollution of animal habitats alone is reason enough to overthrow it.

In fact I have been one the phone to David Cameron the opposition leader about the tiger.
I suggested an auction to hunt them. The super rich would try to out bid eachother for a legal shoot complete with elephants and beaters. It would mean local jobs and price the poachers out of the market as the game keepers would be paid for by the leagal hunters.
There is only so much room and habitat for tigers and so the excess can be shot to stop them fighting for teratory.
It would mean money woud lead to the up-keep of the tiger habitat and population. If you hunt tigers to extinction then there would be none left to shoot.
A leagal hunt would appreciate that point but a poacher would not.

The environmentalists are concerned with the loss of perma frost. Glaciers are melting; it is a fact; but are they concerned with the rain forest being cut down too?

Less biofuel and more of alternative fuels. We can do it, big oil will not allow us. That is our first problem, not population. We need to STOP trying to put a BUILDING on every square inch of our land. We don’t need more buildings, we need more of a lot of other things first. Let’s first use our planet wisely and developers have absolutely NO intention of doing that.
The world governments need to lead the way and they are also part of the problem. We have our priorities backwards.

I take the points but you can’t put more land into agricultural production without causing more HABITAT LOSS.
We really do have finite resources. The price of food going up will mean more land is used for food production because it is more profitable in the same way nuclear power is becoming competivtive against fosil fuels due to the price of them going up.
It is a different issue to global warming.
Actually some food programmes cause more harm than good. The USA has historically produced a surpluss of cheap food that is given as aid or sold on the cheap to African countries and they are not allowed to stop it due to purist ideas about free markets.
This puts the local farmers out of business. If they used trade protection they would be able to feed themselves as the local farmers could turn a profit.
George Bush is one for promoting free markets when it suits him, like when he is pushing GMO on Europe. But then puts import tariffs on steel because he is politically too weak to take on the unions. US steel can’t compete in a free market.
Europe isthe same. All out food is subserdised but once produced it is sold on a free market in Africa; where the locals can’t tax it to make their unsubsidised food competitive.

The population is too big. Too much is going towards people and not enough is left for wild habitat.

As wealth increases the birth rate falls. Italy has a falling population. Gone are the days when women would have typically 8 or 9 children because most would die in childhood.

My father is a farmer in Mo. he just recently signned a contract with the state not to farm, fertalize, or cut certain fields. He said it pays about the same just no work involved. The high gas price is what evens it out, 5yrs ago he wouldnt even have thought about it. but now gas is his #1 expense. I’m sure there is alot of that going on, its hard for a stuggling farmer to pass that up. The Gov. knows how to intice people into doing what they want.

Ted Turner is a smart man and what he says is true. The population is way too large and growing at more rapid speeds than ever, with no cap in sight. The population needs to be lowered drastically but not by means of murder. The population must be reduced by enforcing population laws.
In the end, it will come down to the population declining regardless. Whether it be by means of a lack of resources to supply demand or by a more intelligent mean of population caps, the world cannot handle unlimited persons and one of the two options MUST occur.

Please watch the charlie rose interview with Turner, he does not by any stretch of the immagination seem to be a bad man, nor does he seem to be the brightest guy on earth… A major problem is that so many people think biofuels are honestly a good thing due to ignorance and this was the case in this situation.
Our number one policy should be to reform education globally and to help spread awareness of the real issues and potential solutions. People who are not sufficently informed should have no place in a position of power, and any person in such a posission should be completely recorded big brother style for the sake of transparency.

It would not be a very nice place with 100 billion people… I for one appreciate biodiversity. Sure we can have that many, however we would have to be utilizing the land and the sea for what ever solar energy we can get our hands on for that to be sustainable… We could support a LOT more if fusion ends up netting energy that can be harnised, however what are we going to do with all that helium over time

With news of riots over food shortages around the world and global warming threatening the planet with more droughts in the future, we as a planet need to immediately adopt sound food production and conservation strategies that will sustain the population for the next 20 years.
Most people know the 10:1 rule. For every 10 lbs. of grain animals consume, we get 1 lb. of meat. For every 10 lbs. of food a human consumes, only 1 lb. of it is digested. That means for every 100 lb. of grain, we are only getting 1/100th of the nutrition available from it.
If we were to use the grains exclusively for human consumption and only eat animals that graze on unfarmable land, that would increase food production by a factor of 10.
Food that is not digested could be composted with sawdust, leaves, grass cuttings etc. The end product is called humus. That would increase food production 10-fold, increasing the world food supply to 100 times what it is today. http://weblife.org/humanure/
If a country like Haiti had adopted this policy, they could use the humus to enrich their topsoil and in lean years will have humus as a backup food supply–it’s better than cannibalism or mass genocide.

Kissinger’s 1974 Plan for
Food Control Genocide

On Dec. 10, 1974, the U.S. National Security Council under Henry Kissinger completed a classified 200-page study, “National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests.” The study falsely claimed that population growth in the so-called Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs) was a grave threat to U.S. national security. Adopted as official policy in November 1975 by President Gerald Ford, NSSM 200 outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in those countries through birth control, and also, implicitly, war and famine. Brent Scowcroft, who had by then replaced Kissinger as national security adviser (the same post Scowcroft was to hold in the Bush administration), was put in charge of implementing the plan. CIA Director George Bush was ordered to assist Scowcroft, as were the secretaries of state, treasury, defense, and agriculture.
The bogus arguments that Kissinger advanced were not original. One of his major sources was the Royal Commission on Population, which King George VI had created in 1944 “to consider what measures should be taken in the national interest to influence the future trend of population.” The commission found that Britain was gravely threatened by population growth in its colonies, since “a populous country has decided advantages over a sparsely-populated one for industrial production.” The combined effects of increasing population and industrialization in its colonies, it warned, “might be decisive in its effects on the prestige and influence of the West,” especially effecting “military strength and security.”
NSSM 200 similarly concluded that the United States was threatened by population growth in the former colonial sector. It paid special attention to 13 “key countries” in which the United States had a “special political and strategic interest”: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Turkey, Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. It claimed that population growth in those states was especially worrisome, since it would quickly increase their relative political, economic, and military strength.
For example, Nigeria: “Already the most populous country on the continent, with an estimated 55 million people in 1970, Nigeria’s population by the end of this century is projected to number 135 million. This suggests a growing political and strategic role for Nigeria, at least in Africa.” Or Brazil: “Brazil clearly dominated the continent demographically.” The study warned of a “growing power status for Brazil in Latin America and on the world scene over the next 25 years.”
Food as a weapon
There were several measures that Kissinger advocated to deal with this alleged threat, most prominently, birth control and related population-reduction programs. He also warned that “population growth rates are likely to increase appreciably before they begin to decline,” even if such measures were adopted.
A second measure was curtailing food supplies to targetted states, in part to force compliance with birth control policies: “There is also some established precedent for taking account of family planning performance in appraisal of assistance requirements by AID [U.S. Agency for International Development] and consultative groups. Since population growth is a major determinant of increases in food demand, allocation of scarce PL 480 resources should take account of what steps a country is taking in population control as well as food production. In these sensitive relations, however, it is important in style as well as substance to avoid the appearance of coercion.”
“Mandatory programs may be needed and we should be considering these possibilities now,” the document continued, adding, “Would food be considered an instrument of national power? … Is the U.S. prepared to accept food rationing to help people who can’t/won’t control their population growth?”
Kissinger also predicted a return of famines that could make exclusive reliance on birth control programs unnecessary. “Rapid population growth and lagging food production in developing countries, together with the sharp deterioration in the global food situation in 1972 and 1973, have raised serious concerns about the ability of the world to feed itself adequately over the next quarter of century and beyond,” he reported.
The cause of that coming food deficit was not natural, however, but was a result of western financial policy: “Capital investments for irrigation and infrastucture and the organization requirements for continuous improvements in agricultural yields may be beyond the financial and administrative capacity of many LDCs. For some of the areas under heaviest population pressure, there is little or no prospect for foreign exchange earnings to cover constantly increasingly imports of food.”
“It is questionable,” Kissinger gloated, “whether aid donor countries will be prepared to provide the sort of massive food aid called for by the import projections on a long-term continuing basis.” Consequently, “large-scale famine of a kind not experienced for several decades—a kind the world thought had been permanently banished,” was foreseeable—famine, which has indeed come to pass.
