New York Times foreign affairs columnist Thomas Friedman endorsed terrorism in a January 14 column defending Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip.To answer his own question about Israel’s plan–"What is the goal?"–Friedman referred back to the 2006 attacks on Lebanon, which killed about 1,000 Lebanese civilians. To Friedman, this was the "education" of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah:
Israel’s counterstrategy was to use its air force to pummel Hezbollah and, while not directly targeting the Lebanese civilians with whom Hezbollah was intertwined, to inflict substantial property damage and collateral casualties on Lebanon at large. It was not pretty, but it was logical. Israel basically said that when dealing with a nonstate actor, Hezbollah, nested among civilians, the only long-term source of deterrence was to exact enough pain on the civilians–the families and employers of the militants–to restrain Hezbollah in the future.
The "logical" plan, as Friedman explained it, is to punish civilians in the hopes that this will force the political change you prefer. This is precisely the "logic" of terrorists. According to Friedman, this "education" worked on Hezbollah, and he hopes it will work in the current conflict: "In Gaza, I still can’t tell if Israel is trying to eradicate Hamas or trying to ‘educate’ Hamas, by inflicting a heavy death toll on Hamas militants and heavy pain on the Gaza population." Friedman’s preference is for the terrorism "education." This pro-terrorism argument has been made before by Friedman, who advocated the same sort of terror against Serbs, writing (4/6/99) that "people tend to change their minds and adjust their goals as they see the price they are paying mount. Twelve days of surgical bombing was never going to turn Serbia around. Let’s see what 12 weeks of less than surgical bombing does. Give war a chance."

The New York Times has developed certain rules and guidelines for its opinion columnists over the years–they are not permitted to endorse political candidates, and they are generally expected to refrain from criticizing one another by name in print. Other policies have been made clear in the past–as when liberal columnist Paul Krugman was instructed not to refer to George W. Bush as "lying" during the 2000 campaign (Washington Post, 1/22/03).
Does the Times have a similar standard for columnists who endorse inflicting suffering on civilians? Or does the acceptability of advocating terrorism depend on who is being terrorized?
ACTION: Ask the Times if Thomas Friedman’s column advocating terrorism against civilians in Gaza meets the paper’s standards for its opinion columns.

i think that people aren’t wrong when they talk about the way arab’s treat women, but i think that this is the larger issue between the two religions. how they treat their women. i think that this area (Gaza) is instrumental to the healing of the planet. we’re made to look at this for what it is. and why not? why should we hide behind our ignorance, after all that is what those who control the media AND the politicians want to happen. There are facts and we have to face this issue, head on, for our future.

In the first year of the Iraq war the U.S killed roughly 20 000 innocent civilians, with the media showing all the carnage from all angles.
Israel has killed 400 every week so far, which would add up to roughly 20 000 people in one year, There has been nothing but a media blackout in Gaza. Israel banned foreign media inside Gaza ,to block the outside world from seeing another horrific glimpse at something like Iraq- that is how serious and terrible bombardment that the Gazans have taken.Thousands of bombs have been dropped on them.
And when America bombed Baghdad in 2003, they killed Saddam Hussein’s security forces and Bathist political members, which left Iraq lawless and the following year in 2004,2005,2006 and 2007 were four years of constant suicide bombings by insurgents who killed over 400 people per day at their worst. Israel is completely destroying Gaza so it can’t ever be built up to be a city recognized by the world, and keeping the media out of Gaza is the fist step to deleting a nation…

If you want to cast stones, Jesus Christ instructed us to call no man “father” on the earth as we have one father, which is in heaven. I agree with you about those false doctrines as well as the pre-trib doctrine, but it doesn’t make your version any more correct. You should just seek The Lord and quit worrying about everyone else.

Here on this website we have Catholics fighting with Protostents, and everybody going after the Zionists. Some support Israel because they are supposedly “Chosen” by their god. Others support the Palestinians because they are being oppressed by Israel.
When are we going to realize that religion is one of, if not the biggest problem facing the planet? You may say it is the New World Order. And it is. But look at how they are using religion to their advantage in controling and manipulating the masses.
Christopher Hitchens is right when he says that religion poisons everything, and it is hard to deny. Most religious will not try to deny all the problems with their destructive doctrines. They will instead justify them.
I grew up a hardcore “bible thumping” Christian and I have the scars to prove it. I even got my degree in Theology and came this () close to becoming a minister myself. But over time I ran into more and more discrepencies and problems with my belief. I finally decided to dig deeper and found out that much of the bible had been changed hugely over just the first couple of centuries to fit the beliefs of the scribes and bishops doing the copying of the texts. The begining of Christianity was one of dozens of different doctrines followed as the one true gospel by their teachers and the scrolls they produced. What we have to today are books that have been altered to combat different viewpoints at that time in history.
So Christians, you do not have “the truth”. You have a mixture of beliefs from the sides who one the arguements, just as you are having arguements now.
I encourage you to research the historical beginings of the Christian church and how the New Testament was formed. A good place to start would be “Misquoting Jesus” by Bart Ehrman. Hey, at least give it a shot. What have you got to lose?

i pity the fools that think violence is going to solve their problems and protect their children in the future. yesterday in my neighborhood of the world, salinas, ca. there were 16 shootings and 6 were fatal. (mexican gangs) there is no place safe , all that is being done is just making more enemies.

For example, cancel your cable service for blacklisting the Al Jazeera English Channel and run an S Cable from your computer to your TV and you can have all the channels you want with a satellite program that is almost free. By the way, the Al Jazeera channel is blacklisted because they show you what the terrorist regime of Israel does to Christian and Muslim Palestinians. FACT:
The protestant reformation had NOTHING what so ever to do with Liturgy and was all about the bling. The reformation took place in less than 50% of Europe but in that fraction of Europe almost the same number of people were starved to death as died in the Black Death which killed between one and two thirds of all of Europe’s population in the 14th century. Three centuries later as a result of those Masonic and Enlightened “Nobles”, whose sole reason for getting involved was to get richer, nearly the same numbers died. They sacked the monasteries, summarily executed the occupants, and claimed the common lands around them, which until then were tilled and farmed by the poor basically for free, who were then either placed into serfdom to the new “Lords” who taxed them far worse than any tithe the monasteries exacted or starved to death for lack of food.

As far as stealing from impoverished parishioners go there are far more wealthy Preachers than there are Priests. Benny Hinn, Pat Robertson, Jimmy “I like whores” Swaggart, and too many others mention, who all but damn people to hell unless they send money which gets used mainly to fuel their private jets or re-sod their back yard golf courses. Never mind the real reason behind the reformation mentioned above. Oh and BTW, if you knew anything about biblical scripture you’d know that tithing was a directive from God in the old testament not the Pope and required 10% of ones gains to be set aside and given to the Temple with a small portion going for it’s upkeep and the rest stored for hard times to feed those in need. The taxes exacted by the Protestant Lords went to pay for self aggrandizing opulence. And still does by the evidence.

As far as knowing little about God’s plan…I don’t know of one single Catholic who is naïve and stupid enough to buy into the Rapture BS. It exists absolutely NOWHERE in the Bible and was popularized by John Nelson Darby and pushed by William Eugene Blackstone in the late 19th and early 20th centuries respectively. The Bible was written down and formalized about 1700 years ago.

The Iconoclasm of the Catholic Church centers around things associated with God and Christ. Praying to Saints for intersession and following their examples which further reinforce Christ’s example is not a bad thing. The Iconoclasm of most Protestant churches centers on praying to and for the dollar sign $ and all that it represents (money being the root of all evil), not the cross. Proof is that most Preachers and Ministers are now in the pay of Homeland Security and instructing their slack jawed congregations to submit to slavery by spouting and misrepresenting the meaning of Romans 13. Protestant bible study is really helping them out isn’t it?

Rusty, are you saying that Jesus placed a pawn of Satan, the Church, on Earth, in the hands of the first pope, Peter? Perhaps you should do some research yourself. Try starting with the new testament. Jesus entrusted his disciples, priests, with continuing His work on Earth. The Lord’s prayer or “Our Father,” as you titled it, were the words of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, and should not be said without reverence. Devout Catholics do study and pray for forgiveness. There is a call for Catholics to evangelize, when the opportunity presents itself. We share the love of Christ, and atleast try to live by his example, as an example for others. Have you ever seen a billboard or flyers or commercials for the Catholic Church? It is not necessary, hasn’t been for over 2000 years. Those who are thirsty will find a well from which they will drink. Have you ever walked into a bar looking for someone pounding down pitchers to tell them what they are doing is wrong and asking them if they might have a drinking problem?
I agree with you in that the pope is a mortal sinner, as were the original disciples of Christ. Popes are not dictators, however, and Catholics are not drones that follow “marching orders.” There are orders which determine the scope and limitations of the pope’s authority. As you may have noticed (especially in recent history,) some people tend to abuse authority.
Catholics do not worship idols. Have you ever kept a picture of a loved one in your wallet? On your desk at work? Why keep a picture of your wedding? Or of your son’s graduation? You know what they look like. You remember what you wore at your wedding. The pictures remind you of a certain time and place, keeps the image fresh. We look at statues, crucifixes, etc., in the same way. We do not worship them. Nor do we worship saints or Mary, the Holy Mother. We ask that they pray for us, as we would for our loved ones.
In regards to tithing, I have never been threatened with the notion that it is required for entry into heaven. Nor has it ever been stolen from me. There have been times when I have been unable to offer anything. However, I have found that a humble, voluntary offering can go a long way, and it comes back in other ways. There are more Catholic charities than you may think. Individual parishes, and individual parishoners are involved in a number of charities.
I do not support Zionism or Israel. Other Catholics do, mostly due naive misinformation. I’m sure some have their own selfish reasons, as well. Those that are honestly trying to live a just life, and have a thirst for truth and knowledge, will see through the bulls--- if they look closely. The truth can be so brazenly obvious. Intuition is a beautiful thing, for which we both know who to thank.
If you think it is easy to become a cardinal, bishop, or pope, you are mistaken. It is much easier for someone to make up their own church, recruit people, and ask for donations…
I found a great deal of peace an sanity through the the sacraments, the rites and rituals you speak of. I have also found that they tend to be less effective when I’m less willing to offer myself to Christ.
Catholics do not hate other Christians. Who would want Christians to hate other Christians? Think about it. Peace be with you.

I was discussing Gaza with a friend and playing devils advocate. I said Israel was fed up with all the Hamas fireworks dropping on their streets. I said “who would not go over there and show them whos boss?”.
There was no convincing him, he spoke of the UN schools and shelters being deliberately shelled. He spoke of the massively superior army of Israel. Of the US support for the action.
I tried to convince him that genocide was a logical and acceptable solution to the problem, but he was not having it.
I do think that Israel have been led astray. They will not be allowed to carry out genocide which is the only logical way they could win this. Instead it will give the green light to those who wish to eradicate the Jews from the planet. Lets face it, the Jews may out gun the Palastinions but they don’t outgun the whole world.
I feel very sorry for the Jews, they are probably now doomed.

I think the Jews are bringing anti-semitism on themselves. It’s inevitable based on the actions of Israel. Making such opinions illegal simply makes it worse. It makes it so it cannot be discussed and the Israelie action cannot be questioned.
There is a reason the word s--- is distasteful, it’s because of what it refers to. Banning s--- and calling it yumyum would simply make yumyum a distasteful word. If Jews have got a bad name there is probably a strong reason, even if it’s a misunderstanding or they are being unfairly blamed for the woes of the world.
Individually I find pretty much everyone to be OK. However on mass, say in a large organisation or country or culture their collective agenda is often diaametrically opposed to other peoples. It’s not your boss, your co-workers, your shop keeper, your neighbour who is the problem since their needs are close to your needs. It’s the big organisation that they are part of but which they don’t control.

Why would the media and government lie about 911? Sure they lied about WMD’s, torture, dumped depleted uranium from bombs over the entire country of Iraq causing millions of deaths for generations to come, lied about rendition flights….but why would they lie about 911? Sure the media and government lied about outing agents names, actions taken during Katrina, lied about the killing of thousands of people and 10’s of thousands of personal pets and animals following Katrina, retaliations against attorney generals for political reasons, threatening Congress, blackmailing Senators, destroying all tapes and transcripts of the days and week following Katrina…but why would they lie about some planes crashing on 911?
Sure they eliminated habeas corpus, installed and supported Blackwater, “lost” trillions of dollars at the Pentagon, privatized and sold-out the entire US infrastructure, illegally used funds meant to “rebuild” Iraq, immunity for telecoms and pharmaceutical that they ordered to commit crimes…but why would the media and government lie about plane crashes on 911? Sure they lied about the massacres in Haiti, stole the elections in 2000 and 2004, detonated the levees in New Orleans 2 days after Katrina left, misquoted world leaders to produce fear.
