The Bailout Is A Fraud

In my last column I discussed the bailout as proposed and noted that the proposal cannot succeed if it impairs the US Treasury’s credit standing and/or the combination of mark-to-market and short-selling permits short-sellers to prosper by driving more financial institutions into bankruptcy.
A reader’s comment and an article by Yale professors Jonathan Kopell and William Goetzmann raise the question whether the Paulson bailout itself might be as big a fraud as the leveraged subprime mortgages.
As one reader put it, " We have debt at three different levels: personal household debt, financial sector debt and public debt. The first has swamped the second and now the second is being made to swamp the third. The attitude of our leaders is to do nothing about the first level of debt and to pretend that the third level of debt doesn’t matter at all."
The argument for the bailout is that the banks will be free of the troubled instruments and can resume lending and that the US Treasury will recover most of the bailout costs, because only a small percentage of the underlying mortgages are bad. Let’s examine this argument.
In actual fact, the Paulson bailout does not address the core problem. It only addresses the problem for the financial institutions that hold the troubled assets. Under the bailout plan, the troubled assets move from the banks’ books to the Treasury’s. But the underlying problem–the continuing diminishment of mortgage and home values–remains and continues to worsen.
The origin of the crisis is at the homeowner level. Homeowners are defaulting on mortgages. Moving the financial instruments onto the Treasury’s books does not stop the rising default rate.
The bailout is focused on the wrong end of the problem. The bailout should be focused on the origin of the problem, the defaulting homeowners. The bailout should indemnify defaulting homeowners and pay off the delinquent mortgages.

As Koppell and Goetzmann point out, the financial instruments are troubled because of mortgage defaults. Stopping the problem at its origin would restore the value of the mortgage-based derivatives and put an end to the crisis.
This approach has the further advantage of stopping the slide in housing prices and ending the erosion of local tax bases that result from foreclosures and houses being dumped on the market.
What about the moral hazard of bailing out homeowners who over-leveraged themselves? Ask yourself: How does it differ from the moral hazard of bailing out the financial institutions that securitized questionable loans, insured them, and sold them as investment grade securities? Moreover, note Koppell and Goetzmann, bailing out the financial institutions puts enormous power over the economy into executive branch hands and amounts to "transition to a socialist economy."
Socializing the housing market and financial sector is probably too high a price to pay for bailing out private financial institutions. Congress should focus the bailout on refinancing the troubled mortgages as the Home Owners’ Loan Corp. did in the 1930s, not on the troubled institutions holding the troubled instruments linked to the mortgages.
Congress needs to back off, hold hearings, and talk with Koppell and Goetzmann. Congress must know the facts prior to taking action. The last thing Congress needs to do is to be panicked again into agreeing to a disastrous course.

What with the HEART bill and now this, what incentive is there for foreign investors to open new companies in the US and create new jobs? What incentive is there for immigrants who came here legally with money and skills to take up citizenship? None! Congress are killing this country bit by bit.

In the great 1980’s Bruce Willis movie Die Hard an international group of thugs invade and take over Nakatomi Plaza, holding hostages and all under the pretense of terrorism. The real truth is that the terrorist ploy was designed to provide cover for a massive robbery and in the end all the hostages would be marched up to the roof of the building which mined with C4 explosives would be blown up, killing all of the hostages and allowing the perps to escape to their beaches of choice where they could bask in the sun collecting interest on their plundered loot.
The criminal Bush administration, Goldman Sachs stooge Hank Paulson, the feckless Pelosi Reid Hoyer Judas Congress and the every incompetent Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke are now blowing the roof with the greatest swindle of the American taxpayer in history.

I couldn’t have said it any better myself. We don’t live in a society that MOST Americans have been deluded into thinking we truly live in. The “free” market system and political processes are rigged by those with power and money. This is a sad day for the United States… What we’ve seen from our “leaders” is nothing short of economic terrorism, or by definition, the unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence (President Bush creating FEAR and PANIC by declaring we face a new depression if this legislation was not passed) against people with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies for idealogical or political reasons or to put it more succinctly, through fear, the American public (and thereby Congress) was manipulated into passing this bill to further an already failed political agenda. Thank you for running this piece. Unfortunately, and largely due to misleading statements made over and over again by the ’standard’ media, many folks believe that they are going to receive real help with their mortgages…oops, guess again, folks, because your mortgage and a “mortgage security” that an investment bank holds is kind of like the difference between one little egg (your mortgage) and an entire poultry farm…i.e. the ‘whole business’, from feeding those chickens to paying taxes and keeping the books to hauling the goods to the warehouse. Hopefully some of us will ask our fearless representatives that voted for the robbery/blackmail “bail-out” for a list of the actual assets that “we” now own – no, not the paper, (the so-called “mortgage securities”) but the actual assets ( I believe these are the very ones that have been referred to as ‘toxic assets’ – T-riff!) that are underlying these “securities”… Hmm, “securities” that don’t sound too secure…Ask HOW MANY people with overwhelming mortgages or plunging property values in your representative’s district are actually going to helped by this “bailout”. This ought to be revealing…

They have triggered the internal implosion of the US economy. The country has a cumulative national deficit of $10.8 trillion. The debt for this year alone will be close to $500 billion. Add on the $700 billion for this so-called bullshit bailout of “toxic paper” Mortgage Back Securities, CDO’s (Collateralized Debt Obligations) marked to market, and the other bogus fractional scam scheme of Credit Default Swaps. No structured assistance in this bill to have homeowners renegotiate their mortgages and equity values with banks, the fuckers who sold off the original mortgages into a thousand CDO’s and made lots of money trading them and getting rid of the risk. Now that is a fine kettle of fish!

Perhaps I’m off base on this. I thought that the political process of this country was as follows; Congress makes a bill, which is then passed to the Senate, who then morph, sell off, change and haggle to reach an agreement, which is then sent to the “executive” aka the presidents office to be then signed into law. Since when did the Senate get the power to just draft whatever they want without it having gone through Congress? What are we paying all of these people in Congress for, if they have no weight? What recourse does Congress have to this? Is there a recourse? If not… then doesn’t that mean the entire system is broken and in serious need for a Constitutional reminder? This entire “bail out” has me on the verge of tears for my dying nation. I’m sure many of you are like me and don’t want this, but what recourse do we have? More and more the posts on this and many sites are sounding more and more like our founding fathers, what does that say about our worsening situation? I’m terrified everytime my wife leaves to go to work, what could happen today? Will she be able to get home if somethign happens? Who can we trust? Where should we go? All of these questions and we’ve been preparing for a long time. I know everybody out there thats paying attention have the same thoughts as I. It is overwhelming and yet this has happens many times throughout history, but man cannot seem to grasp the nature of the con. Will I ever see the day again when such trivial things as a daily comute to work are without such worries? These are shackles of fear that we all wear. When do we cast them off and live as God intended? Think about it.

Emotions are a powerful energy – Stay focused on your family, your neighbors and your nation so that we can heal. A nation in fear is a nation that is doomed. We can, and we will overcome thier corruption and their greed. For whatever reasons they sold out the nation (meaning the government) they will have to live with, I doubt some of them will be able too. So for those that are reading this, Please do not give in to their fear tactics. Fear gives them power and it’s power that they seek. We are strong and we are bonded and we will make it through this. Why is there a mortgage crisis? While there’s plenty of blame to go around for America’s mortgage meltdown, one cause that few are talking about is the hazardous lending practices the federal government actually encouraged throughout the 1990s in order to placate activists who criticized mortgage lenders for discriminating against minorities.
In 1992, for example, the Federal Reserve Board released the results of a study that found, among other things, that blacks were twice as likely as whites to be denied mortgages. The chairman of Freddie Mac said the study was “very disturbing.” He concluded, “It is incumbent upon the industry to work together to eliminate any discriminatory lending practices, whether they are deliberate or inadvertent.” The chairman of Fannie Mae expressed similar concerns.
On Capitol Hill, Rep. Kweisi Mfume, a Democrat from Maryland, said the study proved that lending agencies were racist. “People are being discriminated against by mortgage lenders based on the color of their skin,” he said. “Banks have a long way to go for meeting the legitimate needs of neighborhoods.”
Liberal activists were angry too. One representative of acorn—an association of low-income community organizations—said, “Once again we are presented with overwhelming evidence that discrimination is alive and well in our banking system.” She asked, “What is the government going to do about it?”
As it turns out, the government did a whole lot. But instead of concentrating on individual instances of credit-worthy minorities being discriminated against, it enforced sweeping policies designed to arm-twist banks into making loans available to practically anyone—even those with horrible credit ratings. As the New York Times reported in 1993, “Shamed and embarrassed by their poor lending records, mortgage lenders are finally opening their doors a little wider to poor people and members of minority groups seeking home loans.” Later in the article, the Times wrote, “Many lenders have a second review process in which applications from minority-group members that are denied are looked at a second time by superiors, who are charged with finding a way to approve the loan”

All right. Looking at things logically in the “war” for our minds, it seems that we are not growing fast enough in equivalent to “them” coming out with all these laws, rules, regulations, threats, and upscaled brutality. There are still so many people to “wake up”, but I see there is one thing that will get the people to muster together to the point of believing people like this group who bravely met and had their “down with the regime” conference.
Most people say here and some have even called into Alex Jones’ radio show to say that they are having such a hard time getting others to believe the “truth” stories. Yes, many have “awakened”, but percentage-wise, it is small. There is only one thing that will snap all the nation’s people to finally “get it”, where people who are like this brave group and those handing out “truth” DVD’s or flyers, will be able to be listened to almost immediately. That one thing might happen in the next 40 days or maybe an additional 75 days or so. It was said here by others and has been spoken about for years, starting from the Clinton era before he left office.
The only thing that will snap the entire country into “awakefulness” or realization of the “truth”, is to have Marshal Law to stop either the presidential election somehow or to stop the transfer of power over to the president elect. All other Constitutional laws have been broken by this regime and the people have accepted it, but it seems that they want to have the Constitutional election. So what we need is to have that Marshal Law which seems to be the only thing that the people are saying that they will accept for stopping an election by the Constitution.
If the election or transition of power is done, then I would tend to believe that we really are in trouble because no one would transfer power, which technically is the same thing as giving oneself up to the authorities for crimes committed, unless that person(s) was assured of a safe haven and if a safe haven is available, that means that whomever is taking over the power position would be condoning all crimes committed and therefore would be just as bad as this regime. That allowance of the transfer of power would then obviously be done for a facade, to help fool the people, making it look like “CHANGE” actually is happening, when it would not be.
MARSHAL LAW (or the stoppage of the presidential CHANGEover) IS OUR SAVIOR that will gather the people together in one fell swoop that is not happening now,

Since so many people want to know what to do, when is the gunfighting going to start, or just claim what they would do if such and such a situation ever happened to them or one of their own, maybe all those capable should find out where Alex Jones, Ron Paul, Paul Craig Roberts, Jessie Ventura, and many of the other patriots who Alex has interviewed are and follow them around all day long giving them body guard services.
Now, obviously the enemy will eventually start something that will start a shoot out, but the defense will obviously be a glorious one that will go down in history as the first shot of the real revolution, the day when the battle cry started from the masses, not just the few. The enemy of course has the high tech weapondry and the tanks and aircraft, but it will be an organized effort on the part of the ones who are serious and capable of doing something for the first time as the question constantly arises about everyone organizing somehow to do something useful for the cause of stopping this police state we are now in.
Ones like Alex, Dr. Paul, Paul Craig Roberts and Jessie Ventura are alone in a sense. They are lone wolves. They are loners. They are the ones who are presently out on the front line. So why not start an organized effort yourselves to be with those loners on the front line while you can? Go help those on the front line already, bodily help that is, not just writing here or buying some of their books. Physically they have no protection, even if they have private body guards. Those who are capable of doing what I just suggested now become publically involved and the front liners are the ones who need it most giving them the backing they need for their very lives that they do not have presently. I am sure that someone here can now expand on this to make it work. Yes?

There are still so many people to “wake up”, but I see there is one thing that will get the people to muster together to the point of believing people like this group who bravely met and had their “down with the regime” conference.
Most people say here and some have even called into Alex Jones’ radio show to say that they are having such a hard time getting others to believe the “truth” stories. Yes, many have “awakened”, but percentage-wise, it is small. There is only one thing that will snap all the nation’s people to finally “get it”, where people who are like this brave group and those handing out “truth” DVD’s or flyers, will be able to be listened to almost immediately. That one thing might happen in the next 30 days or maybe an additional 75 days or so. It was said here by others and has been spoken about for years, starting from the Clinton era before he left office.
The only thing that will snap the entire country into “awakefulness” or realization of the “truth”, is to have Marshal Law to stop either the presidential election somehow or to stop the transfer of power over to the president elect. All other Constitutional laws have been broken by this regime and the people have accepted it, but it seems that they want to have the Constitutional election. So what we need is to have that Marshal Law which seems to be the only thing that the people are saying that they will accept for stopping an election by the Constitution.
If the election or transition of power is done, then I would tend to believe that we really are in trouble because no one would transfer power, which technically is the same thing as giving oneself up to the authorities for crimes committed, unless that person(s) was assured of a safe haven and if a safe haven is available, that means that whomever is taking over the power position would be condoning all crimes committed and therefore would be just as bad as this regime. That allowance of the transfer of power would then obviously be done for a facade, to help fool the people, making it look like “CHANGE” actually is happening, when it would not be.
MARSHAL LAW (or the stoppage of the presidential CHANGEover) IS OUR SAVIOR that will gather the people together in one fell swoop that is not happening now,

Opps, I apologize for the duplication of one of my comments. This system told me I was duplicating it but after waiting for about 10 minutes, even though I have seen it take longer at times to post, I thought there might an error. Yes I agree the bail out is a fraud that Congress passed. Congress did the right thing the first time by voting it down, but I knew they would stumble and go against the will of the American people in the end! The way things in the country are going right now (the bailout, the failing economy, etc.) are going to influence the people into thinking that democracy is failing, therefore they will demand a new form of government, which could eventually lead the the formation of the North American Union. seeing now is simply a criminal junta temporarily wresting power away from
the people, BUT IT WILL NOT STAND! The American people are waking up!
