Thousands Flee Pakistan’s S. Waziristan Region

The U.N. refugee agency reports thousands of people are fleeing Pakistan’s South Waziristan region in anticipation of military operations against insurgents. U.N. agencies estimate more than 100,000 people have become displaced since May.
Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province is awash with homeless people who fled the fighting between government troops and Taliban militants.
The most dramatic exodus occurred earlier this year when more than two million people fled their homes in the Swat Valley.
UNHCR spokesman, Andrej Mahecic, says his agency does not expect an outflow of people on that scale from Waziristan. Nevertheless, he says a substantial number of people are fleeing to safer regions.

“In recent days, local authorities have begun registering new arrivals, with more than 800 families registered over the past three days out of an estimated 2,000 families that have moved into that area,” he said.
“While some of the movement from South Waziristan may be seasonal migration, most families say they are fleeing expected bombardments. If full-scale military operations are launched, the numbers of displaced people are likely to rise significantly,” he added.
Mahecic says most of the displaced are staying with host families or have rented rooms. He says the UNHCR is working with local partners to distribute relief supplies, such as plastic sheets, sleeping mats, jerry cans and kitchen sets to displaced people from South Waziristan.
In the meantime, spokesman for the World Health Organization, Paul Garwood, says medical supplies in the region are insufficient.
“Water supplies to health facilities are reaching only 42 percent of these health facilities,” he said. “So, there is a great lack of water. Medical staff, particularly female health staff, are in short number and the health cluster has received only 37 percent of funding requested,” he stressed.
The U.N. agencies say the deteriorating situation in Pakistan continues to hinder their humanitarian operations in the country. In addition, they say they have had to adjust their operations in the wake of attacks on U.N. staff and general insecurity.

Nation in Crisis.
It will be interesting to see how Pakistan holds up in the coming months. I suspect these attacks from within will grow in intensity and frequency. Who knows from there? Can I take it a step further to estimate that Pakistan becomes a failed state, much like Somalia? Or a Hybrid of what Afghanistan was and what Somalia is?
If the U.S. decides that Pakistan is a lost cause, or that Government Control of the area is lost, they may strike key Nuclear sites after special forces retrieve Uranium, so as not to fall into the wrong hands. Crazy times we live in. I just hope we don’t send troops THERE too. But, I’m sure we will…
Poor Paki’s. If they were smart, they’d try to move else where in the world now, before they are considered ‘Refugees.’

I feel the same way you do, but the thing with Pakistan, is they do have Nuclear weapons. And while i would rather us not have to get involved there, i don’t like the idea of islamic fascists having short range nukes either.

I think fascism is quite impossible in fundamental muslim socieaty for number of reasons.
There is a lot of censorship in US, but most dangerous kind of censorship is auto censorship, where people actually avoid to speek their point of view because they might be censored.

It`s really depressing that this seems to be so hard to understand, it`s the oldest trick in the book and so many people just swallow it…
1) Al Qaida doesn`t exist outside CIA payrolls.
2) The Taliban were placed in power by the US, replacing a progressive democratic regime.
3) Khomeini same thing.
4) Saddam same thing but then he scandalously tried to keep national control of his country, so we had to hang him.
5) The US army hasn`t been sent anywhere to advance the cause of the American people for 65 years.
6) Your society provides the resources for imperial expansion, for example in Pakistan.
7) Destablizing societies is the best way to conquer them quickly. The policy of divide and conquer has been practised for thousands of years, it is not a conspiracy theory. Read Caesars book about the conquest of Gaul for an early example; this 10 year war killed about 3 million Gauls and was in fact a genocide.

Just because the British decided to draw a line on a Map to define their occupation of India during Colonial times, that does not mean that the Dawar , Pathan , Pashtoons actually agreed to this separation. People who agree on a majority opinion, will still differ slightly on nuances..
