Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he wants to consider taxing motorists based on how many miles they drive rather than how much gasoline they burn — an idea that has angered drivers in some states where it has been proposed.
Gasoline taxes that for nearly half a century have paid for the federal share of highway and bridge construction can no longer be counted on to raise enough money to keep the nation’s transportation system moving, LaHood said in an interview with The Associated Press.
“We should look at the vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled,” the former Illinois Republican lawmaker said.
Most transportation experts see a vehicle miles traveled tax as a long-term solution, but Congress is being urged to move in that direction now by funding pilot projects.

Home » Washington Politics » Transportation secretary says taxing how much we drive may replace gasoline tax

February 20th, 2009 at 11:52 am
lets see here.
currently: a person who drives more, will buy more gas, and pay more taxes on that gas. a person who doesnt drive much will be paying less taxes.
proposed new tax: a person who drives more, will be paying more taxes. A person who drives less will be paying less taxes.
not seeing much of a difference.
hmmmmm.
1. they wont drop the gas tax or,
2. more big brother monitoring or,
3. people would revolt with higher gas taxes, so make a new system that charges more without people actually being able to see it.
either way…its all evil.

How about this, they keep the gas tax per gallon and also add a milage tax? Isnt that how its been?
They shuffle a new tax here and back off on one there, a 1/2 cent here another 1/2 there. Ah what the hells another 1/2 cent we say or should I say the masses.
A vehicle monitored with a GPS, just think, we can get a speeding citation without even being pulled over. Without even seeing an officer.

if you drive more than others you should have to pay more because you are using more resources than others who don’t drive at all or very little.

chOde, don’t you see the gov’t just wants to monitor/control you more than they already do? How do you think they’re going to check your mileage so they can tax you? It won’t be an honor system. It will be through checkpoints or the like. No, I’ll stick with a per gallon tax, thank you, although it’s too high (another topic).

Toll roads, Toll roads, Toll roads. Isn’t that what he just said? Besides the rich bastards can drive their gas gulling tanks and not have to worry about MPG at all, at all.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
How do they plan to carry this whole thing out? It won’t be easy, and it could cost more to implement it than it would be worth.
Why don’t they just raise the gas tax and have it over with? Like we really need to pay more taxes!

In rural communities, the residents either pay for their own stretch of road, voluntarily, or they make due with what they have.
Also, in every suburban situation, which I have ever encountered, the property owner is surrounded with arable land and native building materials. Great, overland commutes are by no means necessary to physical survival, when local resources aren’t caught up in the creditors’ ever-moving shell game.

Yep. When the stores are all out of food, there’s a pine tree and an apple tree right outside my apartment building. There are plenty of edible plants within walking distance and I’ve seen rabbits and squirrels in my neighborhood while out for a walk. We just need to get tough-minded and realize that grocery stores aren’t the only means of survival in a suburban setting. Even weeds growing up through the cracks of a Manhattan sidewalk can sustain a human being for a while. If things get really desperate, my neighbors will be wondering where their dogs have disappeared to. LOL.

Here’s another ‘guv-thug’ with one of those ‘coincidental’ names! La Hood??? hahaha The jackass is living up to his name, I’d say. There’s NO limit to the expansion of government, as long as WE’RE stupid enough to keep funding it. Get off the grid..stop feeding ‘the beast’.

What a great way for the govt to follow you everywhere you go and charge you for it. Now that is what I call freedom for the slave masters/money changers in charge.

Just a heads up folks…
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama will not adopt a policy to tax motorists based on how many miles they drive instead of how much gasoline they buy, his chief spokesman said Friday. Press secretary Robert Gibbs commented after Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told The Associated Press that he wants to consider the idea, which has been proposed in some states but has angered many drivers.
“It is not and will not be the policy of the Obama administration,” Gibbs told reporters, when asked for the president’s thoughts about the policy and LaHood’s remarks.

“Federal Share”,,,,is this before or after the military/industrial complex takes it’s percentage. The transportation load would be quite easy to bear if the “Wizard Space Nazi Shadow Criminals” just backed off on the killing of innocent children, the wars, suppressed technology that will be used against us and whatever other “Bjorg” ideas they dream up. They have made it that if I could leave the planet,,,I would think about it pretty hard. Well regardless, we need a little bit of retribution for their con,,so it will be fun to stay and fight for our freedom.
