Three men from Queens were set to carry out the first terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11 by offering themselves as suicide bombers willing to kill scores of subway riders, a federal prosecutor said Monday.
The wannabe terrorists, Najibullah Zazi, Zarein Ahmedzay and Adis Medunjanin, had enlisted with Al Qaeda and, as operatives with U.S. citizenship, were uniquely prepared to carry out a spectacular stateside attack, the prosecutor said.
“Al Qaeda realized these men were very valuable to them because they had American passports,” Assistant U.S. Attorney James Loonam said in his opening statement in the trial of Medunjanin in Brooklyn Federal Court.
