The number of tweets from Turkey has not dropped despite the government block on the service, according to statistics. The group Twitturk, which monitors Twitter use in Turkey, said that just over half a million tweets were posted from Turkey in just ten hours, despite the ban, according to the local Hurriyet Daily News.
Furthermore, the hastags #Twitterblockedinturkey and #TurkeyBlockedTwitter were both trending worldwide immediately after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the banning of the website.
Twitturk said that most users had got around the ban by using VPN tunnels which allow them to bypass official government controls. In fact, the ban has been so unsuccessful that there was no measurable decline in the average number of tweets from the country.
