Anti-government demonstrations are continuing in Turkey, a day after Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister, met some protest groups even as he called on his own supporters to show their support for the government.
Amid allegations of Turkey’s police forces using excessive force in the early stages of the protests, the demonstrations have taken on a largely peaceful feel, punctuated by clashes between the two sides.
Demonstrations at Taksim Square in Istanbul started after trees were torn up to make way for redevelopment including removal of trees and the reconstruction of a former Ottoman army barracks.
