A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot and killed along the Arizona-Mexico border last week, bringing attention back to an area plagued by frequent violence.
Agent Brian Terry, 40, and his squad engaged in a shootout during a pursuit of a gang deemed a “rip crew” — an organized group who look to rip off drug mules or others crossing the border illegally.
The exact circumstances surrounding Terry’s death have not been released but the killing took place in a remote canyon near Rio Rico.
According to USA Today, 14 Border Patrol agents have been killed since 2006 while 20 people perished while trying to illegally cross the border during that time.
