An advertising campaign in the UK began using automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify passing vehicles and create personalized advertisements. The motor oil giant Castrol UK Limited yesterday activated a set of five electronic billboards in London that flash an image of the exact type of Castrol-brand motor oil appropriate for the nearest vehicle. ”The right oil for your car is: Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A1,” the advertisement reads for eight seconds as a Jaguar with the license plate 1DFL drives past. The roadside digital billboards, seventeen feet wide and eight feet high, are owned by Clear Channel Outdoor. Castrol’s campaign added the license scanning technology which ties into the official UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) database. The agency provides private registration information to just about any company willing to pay the desired fee. According to Castrol, this particular campaign does not store any information about what vehicles or drivers pass the sign.
“The majority of car owners have little understanding of the purpose of oil in an engine, and as a result are using oil which is not beneficial to their type and age of car, resulting in higher maintenance costs and fuel consumption,” Ali Gee, head of consultancy at Three Monkeys, Castrol’s advertising firm, explained in a statement. “Our campaign will help to convey the benefits of ensuring the use of the right oil for your car.”
ANPR cameras are used by law enforcement and private companies throughout the US and the UK with no established legal framework limiting their use. Castrol’s website offers more detailed information about a vehicle’s specifications based upon its license plate.

This sort of surveillance-for-profit raises serious privacy issues. The UK government is scanning license plates for security and traffic congestion, and now the advertising industry is mirroring those practices for targeted marketing. At what point does privacy cease being an expectation and instead becomes a fundamental right? Unfortunately, license plate scanning is just the tip of the iceberg. They already have this in the US. There is a billboard off the highway, that I pass everyday, that flashes a yellow happy face stating, “Smile your’re on camera.” Then it flashes an advertisment. It’s been there for at least two years. Having big brother watch every move you make is the least of or up coming problems.

It would be a good idea IF the intention was truly benevolent. We know, absolutely, that whatever technology comes out will be used by evil people for evil purposes. The people who would use it for good have been so dumbed down and fluoridated that good intentions are probably off the table anyway.
How stupid do they think we are, or do we think we need instant info (want fries with that?)? Want to know what kind of oil your car uses? RTFM (read the freaking manual)!

The Highways Agency has Google Street View stile cameras on all their vans now.
The DVLA has cars with ANPR cameras and park beside the road scanning motorists.

Flashing, quickly changing signs are distracting and possibly dangerous. The 1 near me that flashes up your speed (+ about 5 or 6 miles and hour!) is quite fun though…

This is Bunk.
The DVLA typically charges £2.50 for every request to access their(?) database. Even if the DVLA charges just one soiltary pound for every database access request (for bulk users), the average billboard in London must have at least 10,000 – 20,000 vehicles passing it every day. this means it would be costing £10,000 – £20,000 per billboard, per day. With 5 Billboards currently trialling, it will be costing £50,000 – £100,000 per DAY. And we are talking about just 5 billboards, in a very small geographic area. Castrol would have to sell a VAST amount of extra engine oil, just to break even, so who else is footing the bill? and what do they want for that assistance, does something smell fishy????
This cannot be economically viable, as someone who has worked in the motor trade for nearly 30 years. I know that the vast majority of people have their oil changed at a garage, and have little say in the brand of oil that the garage uses.
So we have an extremely expensive ad campaign, with little hope of recouping the money outlayed to the DVLA. So we have to look at alternative reasons for something that has so much scope for abuse….
Even if we were to believe that it is purely for advertising, I have one thing to say to Ali G and his 3 wise monkeys….”Giz A Job, I could do that”
Do you really believe that it will be along time before the “authorities” see this as another way of spying on us. before we know it, a new partnership will be formed, comprising of police, local authorities, and any other corporations wishing to “cash in”, and forever more, we lose yet another small slice of our inalienable freedoms.

What a mouthful! Do you know that the natural man doesn’t understand spiritual things and the best sermon you can ever preach is to show people Jesus in action? Do you “live your love” or do you just throw the Word at people and hope it sticks? How many unwanted babies have you taken in to raise? Do you perform true acts of charity, or do you just hit people indiscriminately with the Word? Do you have any idea at all of how to be led by the Holy Spirit in your attempts at connection with people? Just asking…

my new laptop has windows vista when using the touch pad when going towards the outside of this pad a little scroll bar come up that works very irratically,is there a way of deactivating this or using it properly as when on a page it suddenly move the page in that direction by its self

im working with windows movie maker and i really just am not good at anything dealing with videos. i have never put a video up on the internet and im trying to now. and i get this (.MSWMM) from my video file and not even windows media player can play it. idk how to change it i just asked a question about how to convert .MOD and i got the best converter ive been able to find and it still cannot be converted so please any help will be very appreciated.

Before iPhone I used to use a service called Zyb which does allow you to backup your phone contacts and such in a simpler way. With iPhone, of course, iTunes rocks!
