UK, Europe hit with riots over Israel’s Gaza campaign

A London protest against the Israeli military campaign in Gaza turned violent Saturday night as police charged demonstrators outside the gates of Israel’s embassy.
It was one of the largest of many, many demonstrations across Europe on Saturday. Protests in Paris, France also turned violent.
One police officer was knocked unconscious and two were injured in the fray, according to The London Paper. An estimated 300 police in riot gear charged protesters as the crowd chanted "free, free Palestine," hurling hundreds of shoes over a police barrier in front of the embassy.
Tensions continued to rise as the crowd found more objects to hurl — signs, eggs, red paint, barriers, rocks, etc. — until police began efforts to disperse the demonstrators.
Protesters smashed and destroyed a Starbucks, and the Daily Mail reported that others tried to set police vehicles on fire.
The Daily Mail also published a striking series of photos from the protest.
London police told BBC that just 20,000 people were involved in the protest, but BBC estimated 50,000. The London Paper gave a figure twice that, claiming over 100,000 joined the demonstration.
"We want the British government to take a much stronger position," said Lindsey German, an organizer with protest group ‘Stop the War,’ in a BBC report. "There would have been outrage from governments around the world if this had happened anywhere else – the condemnation has been at best half-hearted."
"The British government and European Union have the economic leverage to stop this carnage," said Ken Livingstone, the former mayor of London, in a prepared statement. "They must take decisive action to force Israel to end the slaughter."
Protests ripple across Europe
About 30,000 people marched through Paris, the interior ministry said, and more than 90,000 joined protests in more than 120 towns and cities elsewhere in France.
In the capital, thousands of French men and women of Arab origin carrying Palestinian banners joined forces with left-wing militants amid cries of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greater) and "Israel murderer."
Protesters smashed a bus shelter and a telephone box in central Paris, and bottles were later thrown at riot police and shop windows smashed.
Police fired teargas after mobs overturned motor scooters and set them on fire.
A march in the southern city of Nice descended into violence. Seven police were hurt and 11 rioters arrested as youths broke off from a 2,500-strong crowd of protesters and smashed shop windows.
Demonstrations took place on the streets of other European cities including Athens, Berlin, Budapest, Oslo, Sarajevo and Stockholm.
In Sarajevo, peace activist Svetlana Broz told a 1,000-strong pro-Palestinian demonstration that the city knew better than others "what happens when the world remains silent at a time when innocent civilians suffer", referring to the bloody siege of the city in the 1992-95 war in the former Yugoslavia.
Police in Oslo fired teargas after a small group among a crowd of 2,000 pelted them with stones, and up to 5,000 demonstrators gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Stockholm to call for an end to the military campaign.

More than 6,000 people gathered for a peaceful rally in Berlin, with similar shows of support for the Palestinians in Munich and Cologne.
In western Germany, some 10,000 people, largely from the ethnic Turkish community, protested in Duisburg. Police briefly intervened when demonstrators threw snowballs at a window bearing two Israeli flags.
Innsbruck in western Austria staged a peaceful protest of 3,500 people waving banners saying "Stop Israeli terror" and 7,000 protesters turned out in Bern, Switzerland.
In Athens, more than 2,000 people took part in a protest staged by left-wing groups and thousands demonstrated in Milan and Turin.
A rally is planned in Madrid on Sunday, while a pro-Israeli demonstration is scheduled to take place in London.

Europeans seem to have more freedom to protest than Americans.
This crowd would have been attacked literally like the Presidential debates in the U.S.
Everyone involved would be considered American terrorists.
It is good to see these videos. It shows how bad it has become in the U.S. that we cannot protest on a scale like Europe. And they are not being accused of terrorism.

Israel’s real mistake in this, regardless of what my personal opinion may or may not be of their actions, is that they didn’t have the sense to merely take the ceasefire when it was offered and they were winning. World opinion is now, increasingly, turning against them.

The London police seemed quite polite and were trying to defuse the situation. lets just be fair on that one. They did not even retaliate when objects were thrown at them. I think it would be very different of they were football supporters but the sensitive situation might have prevented them?

There have been approximately 7,200 rockets (Grads, Qassams) and mortars launched at Israel since 2005.
During 2008, there have been 1755 mortars shells, 1720 Qassams rockets, and 75 Grad missiles launched at Israel.
Since Hamas’ election there has been a steady increase of these rocket attacks against Israel’s citizens:
Between Israel’s evacuation of Gaza and the election of Hamas (Aug. 15, 2005 – Jan. 25, 2006), there was an average of over 15 rocket and mortar attacks a month.
Between Hamas’ election and Hamas’ forceful takeover of the Strip (Jan. 25, 2006 – June 14, 2007), there was an average of over 102 attacks per month—an over 650% increase.
Between Hamas’ takeover and the start of the Tahadiya (State of Calm), (June 14, 2007 – June 16, 2008), there was an average of over 361 attacks per month—an increase of an additional 350%.
On Nov. 4 – 5, Israel launched Operation “Double Challenge”, targeting a tunnel Hamas was building as part of a plan to kidnap Israeli soldiers.
From the end of Operation “Double Challenge” until the end of the Tahadiya, (Nov. 4 – Dec. 19, 2008) a period of only a month and a half, there were 170 mortars, 255 Qassams, and 5 Grads fired upon Israel’s civilian population centers.
Since the end of the Tahadiya (Dec. 19, 2009) until the beginning of Operation “Cast Lead,” (Dec. 27, 2008) a period of little more than a week, there were approximately 300 mortars and rockets fired onto Israel.
Since the begining of Operation ”Cast Lead”, there have been an additional 500 launches, 284 of which have been verified as rockets (both Qassams and Grads), and 113 as mortars.

The Chicago experience is that hardly anyone turns down the item and they are grateful for the stuff. It also may get them to make copies if you imprint the envelopes with that idea. i hope someone can answer this question. i read and read on this mid east conflict between israel and palastine to better understand the crisis, as it plays a vital role in world events. as far as i know, palastine bombed the s--- out of israel time and time and time again killing many of THEIR people first. israel wanted to strike back and couldnt per international pressure especialy from the usa, and now that they finally are pushed as far as they can be pushed, and they are striking back and within their rights to do it. i honestly want to understand whats going on and why everyone except our own government is totaly against this. my own common sense says that if my government supports it, i probably shouldnt. so if someone has some insight on this and is good enough to put it in layment terms and still keep it right to the point, the input would be greatly appreciated. im trying to learn…

Just finished listening to an audio of the late and great Benjamin Freedman. i was at the protest march last saturday in London, we marched from Hyde park, through kensigton, well over 100,000 strong, jews christians muslims, atheists, young, old, women and children, black, white asian… anyone and everyone was there united in one cause! calling for Peace In Palestine!
When we got to the back entrance of the Zionist embassy, emotions understandably got higher and shoes and sticks were thrown towards the back gates! Protestors climbed upto onto the walls and waved Palestinian flags, fireworks went off, protestors chanted louder and louder.. eventually the riot police came in with their sheilds and batons to a chorus of boos! then they lined up and out of nowhere they rushed forward onto us! everyone stepped back and in turn, the whole crowd became like a giant wave of people all stuck together unable to breathe,,, little kids and women and the elderly i could hear screaming, try to gasp for air!!
The police retreated in formation and everyone erupted in angry chants of “shame on you!!” “shame on you!!”
This is when protestors started hurling more and more things at the police, anything they could find, the sticks of the banners they were holding, old shoes they had brought along, and anything and everything they could find to throw! It was getting out of control and at the same time there was no where to go! Thousands behind me, to the left of me to the right of me, Riot police infront of me! Eventually there was a bit of calm and the crowds started to walk on past the back of the embassy and whereever the police route took us.. it was now getting dark around 5:30pm
We marched for another 30 mins, side by side, until we got to the front of the embassy, and this is where it went mad!! loud bangs went off, fireworks i presume, i could see many businessed on each side of teh street, and people watching from the windows, taking photos from their mobiles, then outta no where!! i see riot police and they rush everyone back and from the side too! we were all penned in and we couldnt breathe! i hear girls right next to me crying for breath, they pushed us to the side towards the pavement, where they had laid down low caged fences, which people started tripping over, one after another people old, young, women children falling on top of eachother!! there was now where to go.. either in the face of the police, stuck in the middle and suffocate or to the side and fall face first into teh ground while people fall ontop of u! this was the scene!
i was lucky enough to not fall , but at the same time i got stuck near the front!, now i realised the police had i solated our group, around a thousand of us, from the two other main bodies of protesters! next thing i see and hear is “f--- the police!” things being hurled at them, and then the police rushing forward onto us, and this time swinging their batons at us and – i was inches away fro get sparked! the police, stepepd back and i see fellwo protestors trying to rush out with bloody faces, clutching their heads and scremaing in pain.. next thing i saw was.. the small caged fences being picked up and thrown aginst the windows of the starbucks cafe opposite the embassy, sticks, and an everything u could find was being trhrown at the starbucks, the round starbucks sign in the window was destroyed aswel as inside and the palestinian flag was put over the now broken starbucks sign!
next thing i see is young protestors, shouting i got their sheild! two or three police sheilds had been taken from the police and were now being used to taunt the police and more and more objects were thrown at the police and in turn the police coming back cracking skulls with their batons! i hear one guy on a megaphone- rallying the trooops!! ie protestors! and telling everyone to “hit em pigs hard”!! dam! it was crazy!! eventually i was able to step back as the police finally! opened up an exit for us to get out! dam! i got stopped later at the subway by 7 yep 7 coppers! questioned me .. as to why i was wearing a scarf over my face.. ermm it was cold!!!

But I do agree, just throwing rocks and assaulting the police without any sort of plan is sort of counter productive. You should take over an airport, shut down roads, and take over government buildings like in Thailand.
In Thailand, they cleaned out the scummy Carlyle Group proxy Thaksin and destroyed his entire political machine. Even with his billions, paid bloggers, Economist magazine hit pieces and a huge permanent system of bribes, pay offs, and handouts …. protesters by the thousands came out, seized the government’s offices, shut down several airports, got the unions to all strike on and off for 4 months, and literally paralyzed the country. The police had no way to stop them – and the protesters never fired a single shot despite having grenades thrown at them by the police, and terrorists bombing their protest camps periodically. There were clashes with paid thugs – one thug with a machete was beaten to death by the protesters’ vanguard.
Moral of the story is – have a plan, use your numbers to your advantage, seize the government’s assets literally – and one thing the Thai protesters ALWAYS did was treat the police civilly – helping them after scuffles, giving them water when it was hotter than hell out (its Thailand) and so on. You can always get some hot head group of pigs to shoot at unarmed civilians, but not enough to handle thousands and thousands of determined, dedicated protesters.
Even now – the world media will call the Thai protests “terrorism” or “uncivilized” mainly because it was the people totally controlling the government and not the other way around. Of course they’d like to prevent that from ever happening again, thus they vilify them.

The Jewish owned Daily Mail in Britain notes that the cost of policing the anti-Israel “mobs” is nearly one million pounds.
I’m sure all the good people at the demonstration, and those who support them but could not attend, will be pleased to hear the Daily Mail condemn them as mere “mobs”, rather than decent people appalled at the slaughter of children and others by the criminal “state” of Israel. Perhaps a boycott of Jewish owned media like the Daily Mail is in order, although that would of course cover most British national print media.

Funny thing about that Bangkok airport protest is that Thailand at the moment is controlled by the military and yet there was no order to storm the airport, there was little state violence. And yet in liberal democratic Britain, could you imagine a large group of protestors peacefully taking over Heathrow or even Gatwick airport? The govt would immediately brand the protestors as ‘terrorist sympathisers’ or something and send in legions of riot police and maybe military personnel to clear them out.

There is a lot more going on when you consider governments of the world turning their backs on their citizens. Everything that is or has happened is obviously leading to something. And the people will get the short end of the stick! The same people that put them in charge, died for the country and respect the laws that they break.
It has truly come down to the people vs. the governments. These, so call, leaders don’t give a damn about symbolic marching and protesting. We foolishly gave them the power. We have got to take it back if only as a bargaining tool. Other than life saving personnel, Stop Working! Walkout! Work stoppage! Mass strike! Bring it down and hold your ground. When? January 11, 2009 “The Guardian” — -The hasbara brigade strikes again! You always hear about Israeli attempts at media manipulation. Everyone knows it’s going on but usually the process happens through cyber insurgents like those involved with Giyus (and its media monitoring software, Megaphone). Now, we know that the Israeli foreign ministry itself is orchestrating propaganda efforts designed to flood news websites with pro-Israel arguments and information.
A reader of my blog has received the following email which documents both the efforts and the agency that originated them. The solicitation to become a pro-Israel “media volunteer” also includes a list of media links which the ministry would like addressed by pro-Israel comments:
Dear friends,
We hold the [sic] military supremacy, yet fail the battle over the international media. We need to buy time for the IDF to succeed, and the least we can do is spare some (additional) minutes on the net. The ministry of foreign affairs is putting great efforts in balancing the media, but we all know it’s a battle of numbers. The more we post, blog, talkback, vote – the more likely we gain positive sentiment.
I was asked by the ministry of foreign affairs to arrange a network of volunteers, who are willing to contribute to this effort. If you’re up to it you will receive a daily messages & media package as well as targets.
If you wish to participate, please respond to this email.
My friend did so and received this official communique from the ministry with talking points about Operation Cast Lead which s/he was to use in her/his propaganda efforts. Among the links was was a Peter Beaumont Cif piece. The following were identified as “target sites”: the Times, the Guardian, Sky News, BBC, Yahoo!News, Huffington Post, and the Dutch Telegraaf. Also targeted were other media sites in Dutch, Spanish, German and French considered critical of the invasion.
Locally, here in Seattle, peace activists held a rally at our federal building attended by 500 protesters. In the foreign ministry communique issued the next day, activists were directed to comment in the Seattle Post Intelligencer’s article about the demonstration. The comment thread for the article is riddled with clear hasbara “plants” who distort the balance and tone of the discussion with their programmed arguments, making it much more favorable than it otherwise would be.
Here the foreign ministry’s coordinator describes a meeting he attended at the government’s offical office:
Hi all,
I had a meeting in the ministry of foreign affairs today, and was very happy to hear that their metrics show that Israel’s position in the internet is getting better every day. It means that you’re doing a good job! MFA are concerned with the biased public opinion in Europe. So please focus your efforts on European media.
What can you do to help?
– Identify internet battle-grounds in different languages, and let me know
– Comment/post/vote in the listed links and others; you can use the material attached below
– Write letters to authors and editors. Identify yourself as a local resident

This message was meant to encourage the pro-Israel activists in their work:
World governments are still patient with Israel’s justified operation in Gaza. The [sic] public opinion, on the other hand, is impatient, to say the least. This gap will soon close – it always does.

Remember when the defence department was paying public relations companies and Iraqi newspapers to insert articles praising the Iraq war? The companies also attempted to plant coverage favorable to the US military in US newspapers. There rightly was a media uproar about the manipulation. We’ll see whether the same happens over this.
The foreign ministry shouldn’t get a pass on this one. It may view such hasbara as maximising its efforts to “explain” Israel’s position in the world media. I view it as a cynical attempt to flood the web and news media with favorable flackery in a vain attempt to tilt public opinion toward Israel. Not only does it do Israel a disservice, it stains every legitimate effort that the ministry might make to explain Israel to the world, since no one will believe a word it says knowing it engages in such outright propaganda.
Not to mention that this is such cheap pennyante stuff. What do they gain by this? How effective can it be and how many can be convinced? By the way, I’ve even noticed the hasbaraniks in my own blog. You can see them a mile away because they’ve never published a comment before yet write something like: “I’ve enjoyed your blog for a long time, but anyone with a brain in their head knows that Hamas is out to destroy Israel blah, blah blah.” Pretty formulaic stuff. Also, you can Google a few phrases of the comment and if you find it appears elsewhere on the web you know you either have a hasbaranik or someone who has repetition compulsion.
In some instances, western media may intentionally or unintentionally fall victim to manipulation. Tony Karon points out that pro-Israel journalist-historian Michael Oren has published several stories since the Gaza incursion began in US media outlets like the New Republic and Los Angeles Times. He is also on active duty with the IDF in Gaza serving as a public affairs officer liasing with foreign media. You will find nothing noting this in the Los Angeles Times op ed. In effect, the media is allowing advocates like Oren to pass themselves off as disinterested experts when they are anything but. It behooves editors to do some due diligence when they publish any piece that advocates for one side or the other to determine whether there may be conflicts of interest or other unacknowledged factors influencing a commentator’s judgment.
It seems we are now well and truly in the world of Propaganda 2.0.

Day by day we were to learn afresh the lesson now forced upon us, that the denunciations of ancient prophecy have been fulfilled to the very letter — `the land is left void and desolate and without inhabitants.’”
As late as 1880, the American consul in Jerusalem reported the area was continuing its historic decline. “The population and wealth of Palestine has not increased during the last forty years,” he said.
The report of the Palestine Royal Commission quotes an account of the Maritime Plan in 1913:
“The road leading from Gaza to the north was only a summer track suitable for transport by camels and carts…no orange groves, orchards, or vineyards were to be seen until one reached (the Jewish village of) Yabna (Yavne)… Houses were all of mud. No windows were anywhere to be seen… The ploughs used were of wood… The yields were very poor… The sanitary conditions in the village were horrible. Schools did not exist… The western part, towards the sea, was almost a desert… The villages in this area were few and thinly populated. Many ruins of villages were scattered over the area, as owing to the prevalence of malaria and many villages were deserted by their inhabitants.”
Lewis French, the British Director of Development in the 1930s, wrote of Israel:
“We found it inhabited by fellahin who lived in mud hovels and suffered severely from the prevalent malaria… Large areas…were uncultivated… The fellahin, if not themselves cattle thieves, were always ready to harbor these and other criminals. The individual plots…changed hands annually. There was little public security, and the fellahin’s lot was an alternation of pillage and blackmail by their neighbors, the Bedouin.”
These quotes give an unbroken picture of a land unused, unloved and virtually uninhabited for a span of 200 years. It only became “home” to the so-called Palestinians after Jordan lost the West Bank & Jerusalem and Egypt lost the Gaza Strip to Israel in 1967, in a war that those states prepared for and advertised their intent of “driving the Jews into the sea”. Strangely enough, while Egypt and Jordan occupied them, they were never called “occupied territories”.

Those are all very interesting facts but it still does not change the fact that the Palestinians are being killed in their homes (what’s left of them). Their are problems on both sides adn they need to step up to the plate and deal with them peacefully. You say that there is no such thing as Palestine because it wasn’t an official state. Before WW2 there was no such thing as Isreal. Does this mean that they have no official claim to the land either? So who’s land is it?
