The Associated Press and others are reporting that British Prime Minister David Cameron failed to get Parliament’s support in a vote that would have endorsed military action against Syria. The attempt failed by 13 votes, which comes as surprise after Britain expressed willingness to accompany the US in an attack against Syria.
Although the recent vote is nonbinding, overwhelming opposition to a strike against Syria makes it difficult for Cameron to press forward in support of the attack.
By Thursday 150 members of the House, including 18 Democrats had signed onto a letter asking President Obama to let Congress debate whether or not to use military force in Syria.
Rep. Scott Rigell said if Obama allows Congress to debate the decision, it will show signs of “strength, not weakness.”
“There is no imminent threat. We have not been attacked,” said Rigell during a TV appearance in Portsmouth, Va.
