Unemployment in California reaches 70-year high

Official unemployment in California, the most populous state in the US, has reached a new historical milestone. At 12.2 percent in August, it is now at the highest level since 1940. It has risen 4.6 percentage points over the course of the last year alone.
The recently released unemployment figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveal the social reality that lies behind official claims of an end to the economic downturn. Just last week, speaking before an audience at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC, US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke claimed that the recession is “very likely over.” For workers throughout the country, however, the crisis is intensifying.
As high as it is, the statistic fails to capture the true gravity of the jobs situation in California. The 2.5 million people represented in the August figure do not include those who are out of work but have given up looking for a job, or those who are involuntarily working part-time. By some estimates, when calculated together, the unemployment and underemployment rate in California stands at 23 percent.
Even this number, however, does not take into account the thousands of undocumented immigrants out of work in the state. Many immigrants are employed in the construction industry, which has been extremely hard hit by the downturn. Thus, the economic crisis in California affects workers in Mexico and Central and South America, as millions of families are dependent on remittances from relatives.
What is happening in California is not unique to the state. Nevada and Rhode Island both have even higher jobless rates. In Michigan, the forced bankruptcies of Chrysler and General Motors, which were planned, orchestrated, and overseen by the Obama administration, have contributed to an unemployment rate of 15.2 percent. In Ohio, another state that had been part of the country’s industrial heartland, the unemployment now stands at 10.8 percent. Official unemployment for the US as a whole will soon reach double digits.
However, the unemployment rate in California has a special historical significance. Known as the “Golden State,” California was once a symbol of post-war prosperity in the US. In addition to being a major agricultural producer, it was also home to a significant portion of the country’s aerospace, shipping, automotive, and technology industries.

The social catastrophe now afflicting California is not simply the product of blind economic forces. It is a conscious class policy pursued by Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Democratic-controlled State Legislature, and the Obama administration, which is using widespread joblessness to drive down the living standards of the working population.
Facing a $45.5 billion budget shortfall, the state government recently approved more than $15 billion worth of budget cuts to education and social programs.
The Obama administration refused to bail out California, or any of the states facing budget shortfalls. While the administration insists that no money can be made available to prevent the destruction of California’s public infrastructure, the US government has pledged trillions of dollars to rescue Wall Street. Bonuses paid out at the nine major banks, all beneficiaries of government largess, totaled $33 billion last year—a figure that would cover a significant portion of California’s deficit by itself.
California programs gutted as a consequence of budget cuts include: Medi-Cal, supplemental social security payments, child welfare and health services, foster care, domestic violence shelters, and health care programs for HIV/AIDS patients and children with dental disease. In addition, cost-of-living adjustments for Cal-Works, the state welfare program, have been eliminated.
State workers have been furloughed three days a month, resulting in a 15 percent wage cut. The crisis has also reverberated down to local governments. In Los Angeles, the mayor recently announced thousands of layoffs and unpaid time off for city employees.
Meanwhile, cuts in public education have resulted in widespread job losses for teachers and school support staff in K-12 school districts. At the university level, well over half a million students are facing fee hikes of 30 percent or more at state-funded institutions, while thousands of staff and faculty have been laid off statewide.
Much of California’s industrial base is being eliminated as a result of the economic crisis. Toyota has announced that it will shut down the NUMMI plant in Fremont, resulting in the elimination of 4,600 jobs and the closure of the state’s last automobile manufacturing enterprise.
The return of unemployment to levels not seen since just after the Great Depression is a clear expression of the failure of American capitalism and the American political system.
The crisis in California underscores the necessity for the working class to adopt a new political strategy. The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) calls for the implementation of a multi-trillion dollar public works program nation-wide to guarantee employment and rebuild the state’s infrastructure—roads, public schools, parks, community and cultural centers. This program would be aimed at real productive investment, and not the diversion of public money into financial speculation.
The SEP demands immediate relief for the unemployed, including an increase and extension of unemployment benefits to prevent the loss of income. There should be an end to all home foreclosures. Guaranteed health benefits should be made available to all laid off workers.
The realization of these basic social demands, however, requires a coordinated political struggle of the international working class. As a recent WSWS perspective made clear, the jobs crisis is a global crisis. It is the product of a ruthless offensive of the ruling class against the living standards of workers around the world.
The return of conditions of life not seen since the Great Depression is ultimately the product of a society that subordinates the needs of the vast majority to the profit interests of the giant banks and corporations. This crisis can be resolved only by building the Socialist Equality Party as the independent party of the working class, which has as its aim the socialist reorganization of economic life to meet social need, not private profit.

this article is no lie .. It somtimes feels like the unemployment rate here is even hire than what is bieng reported… I myself am collecting un-employment insurance and I know what an unemployment check looks like… When I go to the bank to deposit it I often see 2 or 3 people in a line or about 7 people with the same checks i have. The other day I went to a corner store to by a stamp to mail my letter in to recieve my next check and the guy at the store had ran out of stamps. There was also a lady in line with the same envelope in her hand that I had. This tells me that Un-employment in california is becoming more and more common. If your running into people everywhere cashing the same checks you are and mailing the same letters you are..this is very odd and seems like as the days go by theese sightings are becoming more and more common. Makes me wonder is this the welfare state weve been warned about???? Of course it is..

I agree 100%. Many of my friends would like to stay home with their children and just be mothers, and lovers to their husbands, but their husbands want them to work. Maybe they’ve been femanized to the point that these men prefer things over what’s really important. Fortunately when my children were small, my husband worked hard so I could stay home. I would make sure my husband came home to a clean house, dinner cooking, and his hot wife waiting for him. I didn’t feel subjugated or oppressed….just the opposite….I felt loved and adored…..and wanted to do these things for him….so long story short….don’t blame the women for being feminists….that’s what men seem to want….Harleys and pool tables they can show off to their Bro’s…things are more important than woman and families….its what their Bro’s think….yeah kind of creepy almost gay!!!!

Well, the women should have just said “no!” If I join the army because I was expected to by my father I cannot turn around and say “I did not want to but he wanted me to, I had no other option” that does not excuse the fact I joined. Just say “no” to marrying them until they better understand the family structure, they would learn quickly. Like I said, no excuse.
As for women wanting to be mothers and lovers again, they are in the extreme minority. Do not hand us that B.S. I attended a university and I promise you there was no moaning and groaning by women about being there, they view a university “education” as a way out of “slavery” and from “oppressive” husbands. I do not know where you live but send your friends my way because they would be the first women I have met who did not want to be anything other than a mother and wife.

Man, you are so correct! I grew up in a good family with a loving father and mother. I wasn’t one of those party animal popular jock kind of guys. I was taught to be a nice guy and treat women with respect, and you know what, the girls and women of this world 9 times out of 10 wouldn’t even look at me much less speak to me even if I tried to get their attention. And I am not an ugly guy. I have been told I am handsome, but I was not a “bad boy”. The women of today, even the ones from so called good Christian homes ALL seem to want the bad boys, the popular, rich, important guys or jocks. They are indoctrinated by their mothers, older sisters, aunts, friends, “teachers”, Oprah, etc., etc., etc. from day one to not look for a nice guy, but go for the one who can buy you the fancy house in the country club subdivision, and who can buy you a BMW of Mercedez, and who can take you on the two week trips to Europe or the South Pacific every year. And then there are the women who just like the bad boys, because nice guys are considered boring! Never mind the fact that this nice guy loves to travel (when I can afford which is not often now), loves to go camping, snorkeling/scuba diving, boating, etc. I am a self taught amateur underwater photographer and have dove some beautiful coral reefs in my youth when my family was still a middle class family (before the NWO knocked us down to extreme poverty level). I love to explore nature and do fun outdoor things that are hardly boring. I am not one of those guys who just likes to sit around all day on Saturday and Sunday watching football and getting drunk (I can’t stand those kind of guys, they are NOT men at all.) I am armed and will defend my family to my last dying breath! Let’s see if those drunken football popular bad boys are willing to give their lives for anyone. I doubt it! They will be the first cowards to run in the face of the enemy! But yeah, women nowadays DO NOT want good nice men, even the ones who claim they want a “nice guy” are LITERALLY lying through their teeth. Just look at their actions. Watch them in school or at work. Virtually every single time that a nice guy with good values approaches them and asks them out on a date, they will do one of two things, either outright turn him down for a “bad boy”, or they will string him along as a fall back second or third choice if they can’t find a “bad boy”! I moved from CA two years ago and my son still lives in CA and sees businesses with for sale and rent signs all the time. He’s still working, but he’s the fortunate one. Before I left, I worked for a small architectural firm that was quickly sliding under. The owners had to mortgage their home to keep the business alive.

But first publicly hang the business owners of the construction companies, landscaping companies, restaurants, hotels, etc. who hired them and therefore committed outright in your face treason against their fellow Americans by REFUSING to hire American citizens and pay them a living wage to do the work. Until you get rid of the root of the problem, the illegal alien situation will raise its ugly head again in the near future. As long as you have lying, greedy, selfish THIEVES who control the businesses, you will always have the desire for high profits and cheap labor at the expense of society! And don’t any of you give me that BULLs--- about Americans not wanting to do the work! I am a landscaper by trade. I love landscaping work, but I only have one client who happens to be a friend. 95% of the landscaping work in my area is all being done by Mexican workers. In construction it is virtually 100% Mexican, and I know American men who used to do construction work (good quality work with good materials), who can’t find work now, but the Mexicans are always getting hired! Now if that is not outright TREASON AND CONSPIRACY, I don’t know what is! And no I am NOT racist. I am white, but I have close friends who are Hispanic and Black.

Wow, this article pretty much sums it up over here in Kali. There’s no jobs: layoffs everywhere, the only jobs are like highly competitive doctors, etc or the mexicans have all the construction and stuff., our education is garbage, we keep hiring and raising admins pay, and laying off teachers, WTF? Yeah and that cash for clunkers? They SHUT DOWN OUR MUNNI PLANT! (I think it did Corollas and maybe 2 other types)

We aren’t growing anything because of ‘no water’, mean while we keep hiring more and more enforcement and equipping them with tasers and stuff, but they won’t go into our national forests to chase out the damn cartels! Uhh Cartels murder people in Humboldt, but you bust my neighbor down the street for a few plants in his backyard..Right. Even in my own town, after our elections the first thing the town council did was give themselves a 300$/month raise!! The mayor was like, maybe you guys should hold off on that, were broke, their response, “nah”. Meanwhile we got no roads or parks or anything the govt should be maintaining, maintained. We are shutting down most of our parks actually, but they’ll still have stormtroopers patrolling to ticket you, those goosesteppers make over 100k a year!
Its come to my realization that money was created so that the people that do nothing for humanity, trick us into letting them control the greater majority of our worlds most precious resources.
When will the sheeple learn?
Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a “Black vs. White” over here, a race war would be very damaging, and they know that. Just my 2 cents.

I live in Michigan and it is a waistland here.16% of the people are on unemployment and 20% have no employment at all.Our infistructure is in shambles and all our tax dollars go to pay the polaticians and thier kids to sit around and go on vacations.When you see workers they come from out of state big companies from Iowa and Chicago.The state does’nt even try to keep us people the tax payers of Michigan working.I own my own home and have no mortgage.I still am in trouble with paying my land taxes.If the state thinks they will take my propery without a huge fight they got another thing coming.I am more than prepaired to deal with the masses.I am a very capable to take from them,and the Army taught me how to deal with commy bastards.

California has our version of Nancy Pelosi running our State Asembly – State Rep. Karen Bass. The whole legislature is insne. One legislator just resigned for sleeping with a Sempra energy lobbyist and with another lobbyist yet unnamed while he won a Family Values Awatd. We have recalls on a couple of other state reps going as well.
Keep in mind, particularly all of the US’s modern tax rebellions have and ARE taking place in California.
Prop 13 Howard Jarvis property tax Initiative… and the recent May 19th ballot 1A-1F massive defeats which stopped two additional years of state tax increases for 2011 and 2012! Also the propositions to stop illegal immigration welfare benefits and driver licences.
So, the Second American Revolutuon has already started in California….
