US Census Bureau report: 40 million living in poverty

The overall poverty rate in the US rose to 13.2 percent in 2008, as workers across all sectors of the economy became jobless and increasing numbers of families were forced into destitution, according to a new government report. Real median household income also declined by 3.6 percent.
The report released Tuesday, part of the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, is the most recent to measure the recession’s impact on working class families and the poor. Based on the changes between 2007 and 2008, the first full year of the recession, its findings do not reflect increases in poverty and joblessness this year as the consequences of the crisis have become even more acute.
The official poverty rate of 13.2 percent in 2008 was up from 12.5 percent in 2007. This figure translates into 39.8 million people in poverty across America. The official poverty level is set at $22,000 annually for a family of four with two children or $12,000 for an individual, an absurdly low threshold. This means that far more people than indicated by the survey do not have adequate resources to pay for food, shelter, medical care and other basic necessities.
The poverty rate rose across virtually all demographic groups. Poverty among Hispanics climbed from 21.5 percent in 2007 to 23.2 percent in 2008. Non-Hispanic whites saw poverty rise from 8.2 percent in 2007 to 8.6 percent in 2008, while poverty among Asians was up from 10.2 percent in 2007 to 11.8 percent in 2008. African-Americans were the only group where poverty remained statistically unchanged at a staggering 24.7 percent, or about one in four people.
The Census Bureau reported a rise in poverty in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Two of the four most populous states—California and Florida—saw poverty rates rise by 1 percent, to just over 13 percent in each state.
Connecticut saw the largest increase in poverty, rising to 9.3 percent, with an additional 1.4 percent of the state’s population living in poverty. Connecticut’s proximity to Wall Street, the center of the financial collapse, contributed to the state’s poverty as spending cuts by bankers and other financial employees in the New York City suburbs were reflected in declines in income for the lowest paid workers.
William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, commented in an interview, “People don’t go from being a CEO or a hedge fund manager into poverty, but there is a trickle-down effect when these groups of people start to cut back on their spending. In many places, the first people to go when things get tight are the lowest-earning workers.”
Michigan, which has been devastated by the collapse of the auto industry, is the only state that has seen poverty increase for two years in a row, with the rate now standing at 13 percent. The industrial states of Pennsylvania and Indiana also saw significant increases in poverty, along with Oregon and Hawaii.
The South remained the most impoverished, at 14.3 percent, up slightly from 14.2 percent in 2007. Mississippi, with 21.2 percent in poverty, saw the highest rate of any state, while poverty in Kentucky, West Virginia and Arkansas hovered around 17 percent.

The rate of poverty among America’s children is alarming, with 19 percent—14.1 million children—affected in 2008, up a full percentage point from a year earlier. This rate increased in 26 states and in Washington, DC. Children in families headed by a single female suffered the highest rates of poverty: 43.5 percent of those under 18 years of age live in poverty, while 53.3 percent of children under 6 years are poor.
Increasing numbers of families, both the jobless and workers facing shrinking hours and paychecks, are turning to food pantries and the Food Stamp program. Food Stamp use in 2008 jumped 13 percent to nearly 9.8 million US households, led by Louisiana, Maine and Kentucky. Two cities—Pharr, Texas, and the former General Motors production center, Flint, Michigan—each had more than a third of their residents on food stamps. Families with two or more workers accounted for 28.4 percent of food stamp recipients in 2008, up 1.5 percent from 2007.
Following three years of annual income increases, real median income declined in the US by 3.6 percent between 2007 and 2008, falling from $52,163 to $50,303. The Midwest and South saw the biggest declines in median income, 4 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.
The gap between the richest and poorest Americans is also widening as the economic crisis ravages household budgets. An Associated Press analysis of the Census Bureau statistics shows that the wealthiest 10 percent of Americans, those making $138,000 or more a year, earned 11.4 times the $12,000 made by individuals living below the poverty line in 2008. In 2007, the richest 10 percent made 11.2 times more.
The jump in poverty and income inequality comes as the job market continues to shrink, even as government and economic analysts speak of a turnaround. According to US Labor Department figures from July, job seekers now outnumber openings six to one, with only 2.4 million full-time, permanent jobs open while 14.5 million people are officially unemployed and looking for work.
Many companies remain cautious about hiring new workers in the uncertain economic environment. Having trimmed back workers’ hours and laid off temporary workers, even if businesses do expand in the future they are likely to increase output by increasing the workload on existing employees.
Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute, told the New York Times, “They have tons of room to increase work without hiring a single person. For people who are out of work, we do not see signs of light at the end of the tunnel.”
From December 2007 through July 2009, job openings have declined in every area of the country: 45 percent in the West and South, 36 percent in the Midwest, and 23 percent in the Northeast. According to the Times, since the end of 2008 virtually every sector of the economy has been hit by the collapse in job openings, which have shrunk 47 percent in manufacturing, 37 percent in construction, 22 percent in retail, and 21 percent in education and health services.
While it is estimated that the government could spend in excess of $23 trillion to bail out the banks, and hundreds of billions to pursue its military conquests in Iraq and Afghanistan, nothing of any substance is being done to help the millions of Americans being plunged into joblessness and poverty.
The National Employment Law Project, an advocacy group, estimates that 400,000 Americans nationwide could exhaust their unemployment benefits by the end of September and 1.4 million long-term unemployed could stop receiving checks by the end of the year.
In some states, such as California, where the unemployment rate hit 12.2 percent in July—the highest level since 1940—workers laid off early in the recession have received three extensions on the regular 26 weeks of benefits, bringing them to a maximum of 79 weeks of payments.
The US House recently passed a $1.4 billion bill to provide another 13 weeks of jobless benefits in high unemployment states like California. The legislation still faces a vote in the Senate. The extension in benefits, however, would not cover many of the newly unemployed, or those yet to lose their jobs.
In California, for instance, hundreds of thousands who filed claims after June 14 of this year would be eligible for no more than 39 weeks of benefits. A House bill that would have provided longer extensions through 2010 was scrapped because it would have cost $70 billion, a price tag the lawmakers were unwilling to authorize.

I wonder how many of that 40M are living in Shantytowns in California and the Midwest. This is all going according to the plan of the globalists. They want to consolidate wealth in the hands of very few people. At this rate, the middle class will be completely wiped out.
Even though I’m facing foreclosure, I’m still determined not to end up in a shack with no running water or plumbing. We can fight these people with the power of the MIND. I came across an association that teaches in depth about this. It’s said that we only use 10% of our total brain capacity. We could effect so much more change by simply learning how to harness the power of our minds.

yes the figures are reported on a curve to make the numbers smaller…
homeless statistics to not include the unemployed
unemployment statistics count less than 60% of people without jobs, since it’s based only on people seeking unemployment benefits
neither of these statistics factor in people living in halfway houses, drug treatment centers, or jails of any kind
they also do not count impoverished military famlies or veterans on govt assistance
all told about 40% of the people living in the US, legal or not, are in some sort of financial dire straights, whether it be mild or severe.

Well caculate in 1970 the price of gold was 36 dollars an oz and the minum wage was 1.80 cents we can round the figures to see what the minum wage should be to have the same purtchasing power our parents and we enjoyed so much. Even if we rounded up to 2/hr of work it would be at 18 times or 18 hours of working a minum wage job to afford 1 oz of gold in 1970. we can quickly see that gold at 1000 an oz today would make the 7 dollars/hr minum wage today look silly at best. Even if we rounded up 7 dollars to 10 and devided it into 1000 we get 100times or 100 hours of work for the same one oz of gold. this would place the ratio to 18:100 or aprox. 5 times greater 500% more buying power. Minum wage should be 50 dollars an hour. Spred the word that we are being lured into neofudilism by allowing farmer omamastein to make us the cash cows submit and wear the ceptum ring and when he wants to place our hind legs in his boots to do the nasty. He just pulls our nose ring to lead us to the slaughter or rape of us. have you seen the face of poverty in the us cars, cell phones. microwaves, tvs, dvds, designer clothes free apartments, free medical, free childcare, look at the people lined up at the welfare office you wont see a thin person in the bunch they are all 300 lbs or more
look at the poor in africa they are rail thin because they really are poor no tvs, dvds, cable or other “neccesities” this is a lie these people are scamming the system there are no poor in the us

Well, according to Glenn Beck’s “An Inconvenient Book”, 25% of all households living under the poverty level have big screen TV’s. I didn’t see a percentage for poverty for households, but the article said that 9.8 millions households had received food stamps. So, almost 2.5 million households using food stamps have big screen TV’s. Hmmmm….

I just called in with a comment – they were asking what excuses would people give for NOT vaccinating their kids. “Don’t have time.” “Allergic to eggs”. How about “to keep them alive”.?
I told him I’d had the vaccine in 1976 and saw the results. He said it was an entirely new vaccine and got off the phone with me like I already had the flu. Yeah, right.
I just don’t think people are as awake, other than here, as we give them credit. Clueless. But I guess it’s not their fault, what with all the fluoride.

To the people who are homeless, go find an abandoned house and live in it. Or commit a minor violation and make the police lock you up…..Hell its alot better in jail than living on the streets, at least in jail you get three meals a day and a warm place to sleep….This would put a stop to the homeless situation…..And you know every time a tent city is erected the cops run them off, they have no where to go. So lets fill up the jail cells, abandoned houses, and put a stop to this Madness.

People in jail get 3 squares a day and they are treated better than the poor sap who just lost his job. This is so twisted. The jailed have more “rights” than the general population. They are treated with kid gloves in case there is a “technicality” and they can go free. Ever try to apply for food stamps? It’s humiliating! You’re treated like a liar as soon as you walk in the door.

i lived more than 15 years on the street and roamed freely the world .

I’m pretty sure that here in Northern VA we have the rudest and non caring drivers in the entire United States. I could see this coming around 1977, when I was 9 or 10 years old. I live in France on social benefit, just over 7000 dollars a year. I get all medical treatments and medicines for free, I own my own house & car and have no debts. Living frugaly becomes an art form after a while. I don’t feel ‘poor’, I just thank God I had the insight to sell up and get the hell out of London. People laughed at me at the time, thought I was mad, their not laughing now. I’m gardening like mad preparing for the bleak future food crisis. Planting fruit trees, herbs ,tea, all organic.
For example, I have bath towels 28!!!! years old, still white but tatty around the edges. Friends give me thier ‘cast offs’, I’m never too proud to accept recycled clothes etc.
I’ve been wealthy in life. This life is far more interesting although difficult at times. Debt is modern slavery. I saw a sign today saying, more you buy, more you win! How stupid! Another trick is signs in the supermarket saying winning price. For example I caught one shop charging 1 euro 50, when in another it was 80 centimes. Question the price of everything, take time to shop, the theft is constant.

The very first time that I was laid off and my job shipped elsewhere was in 1994. I had worked for this particular firm for 11+ years. I was required to participate in what they called an “outprocessing interview”. They got mad at me and called security on me when I asked the dumb bimbo conducting the so-called interview; “What are you going to do once you have ‘outsourced’ all of our jobs overseas and there is no one left here with any money to buy the cheap ass Asian junk that Corporate America wants inport to replace the quality products that we used to make here in this facility?”
The last time that I was laid-off was on August 24 of this year; by email and with twenty-four minutes notice before the end of the day. The unemployment assholes are already hasseling me to go find/get a job that isn’t there.
Where are all of those jobs that our new president said that he was going to save or create? He must have been talking about the additional 40,000 – 50,000 troops that his generals now want to send to Afganistan. God help u

Real unemployment is 20.8% (government’s real unemployment numbers is 16%, but they cook the numbers by adding 4% self employed through phony statistics) or more than 60 million people unemployment. Many employed are poor low wage earners. Many of the people unemployed or making low wages have people dependent on them.
We are therefore looking at conservatively 100 million plus poor people in the United States.

Forgot to add the many retired elderly receiving only between a few hundred dollars and a little over a thousand dollars a month in retirement. At least half their money is spent on property taxes, or even more for rent, and the rest goes towards food and heating costs. There are a lot of poor elderly people to be added to the numbers.

a lot of this is probaly true, I got a big screen tv but got it while times were good, we might be pawning all the junk we got now that money has slowed to a trickle, the good times are over we might all be wantin to just eat from here on, it’s even getting close coming up with rent now it’s probaly like that for a lot of people now.

Earlier I tried to post what I thought, was an important message. I lost it when I didn’t have my name in the required fields. I want to try again and see if I can relate that message again.
Does anyone in politics have any common sense??!! As a nation and part of a global population, we have some major issues we are dealing with. What is the solution? How can we all come to an agreement? World relations, aren’t they similar to our own personal relations? Don’t we feel personally related to our own nation? If we alienate one another we will create a distance. A rift, that will eventually rip us apart.
Why did we give multibillion dollar bailouts to the banks? In my view, we should have demanded the money go towards helping the people. Sure, we can give the money to the banks that are in trouble. They can pay thier bills for a while, but where will they get future business if we continue to lose our jobs and we stop paying? Money needs to go to the people. Give us the opportunity to pay our debts and create our own stimulus. Most people only want to pay their debts. We need to ask why we have poverty?

If it were up to half of you all americans would be in poverty, you would be very happy to see this kind of death and mysery, you would say “well you pigs die now you pigs”
What ever is going on at the top, if its evil, well you can bet that evil people will backstab each other and it will fail in the long run. To assume everyone is evil at the top is silly, all people have a heart somewhere.
