U.S. motorists are risking rampant drug violence in Mexico to drive over the border and fill their tanks with cheap Mexican fuel, some even coming to blows over gas shortages and long queues.
The gap between Mexico’s subsidized gasoline and record U.S. prices has made it well worth making the trip, and U.S. drivers are even shrugging off the dangers of Mexico’s drug war which sees almost daily shootings in border towns.
Some say they can save up to $100 a month by filling up every two weeks in Mexico. The extra demand is causing shortages at hundreds of Mexico’s border gas stations, some of which are starting to ration fuel.
“It’s worth taking the risk even with the violence,” said a retired California engineer named Terry, who declined to give his surname, as he filled his red Ford pick-up truck in Tijuana, over the border from San Diego. “I know they could kill me or kidnap me, but the cost of filling my tank in the United States is just too much,” he said.
Mexico’s subsidized gasoline — around $1.40 cheaper per gallon than in the United States — is a huge draw as average U.S. pump prices hit an unprecedented $4 a gallon ($1.06 a liter). In West Coast cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, prices are over $4.50 a gallon.
Savings on diesel in Mexico are even greater. A gallon of diesel in southern Arizona cost $4.64 this week, compared to around $2.25 in Mexican border towns, Reuters reports.
Car manufacturers should change the way they advertise the fuel efficiency of their vehicles, to make the environmental impact of buying a new car easier to understand, researchers said yesterday.
Turning a car’s fuel efficiency on its head by stating it in “gallons per mile”, instead of “miles per gallon” helps potential customers choose the greenest option when they upgrade, said the team at Duke University in North Carolina.
In The MPG Illusion, published in the US journal Science yesterday, Richard Larrick and Jack Soll at the university’s Fuqua School of Business describe how the use of miles per gallon is misleading and causes people to grossly misjudge the environmental impact of upgrading to a new car.
The two management professors stumbled across the problem while working out the true fuel efficiency of different cars in a car-sharing scheme.
They found people often believed – mistakenly – that a 10mpg improvement in fuel efficiency always corresponded to the same fuel saving.
“The reality that few people appreciate is that improving fuel efficiency from 10 to 20mpg is actually a more significant saving than improving from 25mpg to 50mpg for the same distance of driving,” said Larrick.
Likewise, replacing a car that does 10mpg with one that appears only slightly more efficient at 11mpg saves as much fuel as upgrading from a 33mpg car to a 50mpg car.
To work out new fuel efficiencies, Larrick calculated how many gallons of petrol a car would burn over 10,000 miles. A 10mpg car would burn 1,000 gallons, while a 20mpg car would burn only 500 over the distance. In comparison, a 25mpg car would use up 400 gallons, while a 50mpg car would use 200. Despite most people’s first impressions, the fuel saving is 2.5 times greater in the first instance, The Guardian reports.
The finding suggests that people who use two different cars equally will always save more on fuel by improving the least efficient car.

This article says $4.50 for gas in Los Angelos. I was there last week and seen $4.79, $4.89 and even $4.99 for regular unleaded. It’s gettin crazy people.

wtf.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I am going with the 200 gallon car. I don’t care what the nerds say. The so called experts are always poo pooing fuel efficient cars. Screw them! They are all on the oil dole! I am getting 22/29 and 29/41 in my two banger fours.

Just shows American ingenuity in the face of a crisis. If I lived there I’d do the same.

this is a repost of an article i read three or four months ago. The names have changed and the locations are different but it is the same propaganda. To find it on this site is troubling. It is a farce to tell someone to stay with a less efficient machine. Imagine the number of gallons saved if all cars were required to get a minimum of 50 MPG. For crying out loud what isn’t told in this article is the most closely held secret of the industry. WE CAN”T EVEN SELL OUR CARS IN MANY OVERSEAS MARKETS BECAUSE THE FUEL ECONOMY IS BELOW THEIR STANDARDS !! China is one example… these bastards send us lead filled crap yet their cars get a minimum of 60 mpg and will not allow the sale of anything that doesn’t. I believe the big three have been lying to us for years in their relentless pursuit of the almighty mpg. BULLs---!! there is no more time….. The time is now……. Rebel
June 20th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
this is just a scam to get all the money needed till the economy drops….
who knows what is going to happen in the next 5 years….
we got plenty of Oil….i am sure of it…
they are creating a crisis to further the agenda once again….
wish gas was 2 bucks again…

The only thing the big auto makers have been pursuing for decades since the arrival of the Japanese automobile is greed and profits at the expense of the American public. They have ignored the masses they serve and produce pieces of crap that are over priced for their real worth. What we see today is a direct result of what happens when an auto monopoly is run for greed and profit only. In the end they will collapse and blame everyone else for putting themselves out of business. Congress and politicians are also to blame for this whole failed system of capitalism pursued under monopolistic ideologies. I say the big three will get what it deserves for failing themselves as a business entity and for failing the American public with what really mattered to our national transportation interests. I for one am glad that they will get what they deserve in the end but what a shame it has to drag thousands of employees down with it.

What dumbasses these professors are.. that’s why they call them professors, because they just profess, but with no real intelligence behind what they are saying.. So your point is that you can improve your car efficiency if given the chose between having a car that gets 10 mpg and going to a car that gets 20mpg, than you could if you had a car that gets 33mpg, and you go to a car that gets 50mpg.. That is the f---ing dumbest logic I’ve ever heard – you are saving more gas overall if you drive the car that gets 50mpg.. Go back to f---ing elementary school, because your Phd. isn’t worth s---..
June 21st, 2008 at 12:35 am
Wow…that’s some fuzzy math those “professors” are using. LOL! it’s better to drive a 20mpg card than a 50mpg car…wow! They really are trying to sell that one.
June 21st, 2008 at 3:39 am
Duh. Don’t go to Mexico to fill up your tank. Dumb ass Americans.

Yep, the price of living in this land sure has gone up since the Europeans came. We’ll you have your stolen Indian land so you got what you wanted even though it appears your world is becoming more & more of a festering Hell on earth where about all you people do is weep, wail, and gnash your teeth about all the problems you created upon the earth.
In 1492 the price of living upon the earth in this land was free. In 1620 when the Pilgrimns landed the price of living upon the earth in this land was free. Now does your world have problems?

This is incredible. I saw this article under Yahoo’s Headline news on their front page for some time. I dont understand it – now I do. They’re trying to get you to understand the RATIO OF IMPROVED gas mileage is more significant for say, 5MPG MORE for a 10MPG car before. So you go from 10MPG to 15MPG – thats a 50% increase. Yes… I understand simple math and logic.
Now here is what I now understand but didn’t quite put it together earlier. Now (thanks to some commenter’s here on Infowars) is that they are trying to dramatize or glorify a MINOR increase in MPG digits. So if a car gets 12MPG like some of these trucks or large cars made by Dodge, Chevy, etc… then if you bump them up to 15 (+3 increase in mileage) then thats a “HUGE” increase. Well, maybe, RELATIVELY SPEAKING. But a “33 to 50MPG= +17MPG increase is less significant”-???
See whats going on? They are trying to get you to think that a SUPERBLY fuel efficient car is NOT going to dazzle you as much as a MEAGER 15 to 20 (+5MPG) increase would.
Now that 13MPG 4×4 SUV (which probably gets poor crash ratings and is likely to flip over a lot more than a regular car) doesn’t look so bad compared with say a 55MPG Prius! (which has side impact airbags and head-curtain airbags and might have a superior crash rating compared to the 4×4 SUV that most people just drive around town and don’t even take it up a dirt hill once every 2 years).
Do you SEE the brainwashing here? Do you see that they’re doing the ol’ Orwell (Eric Blair’s) 1984 Brainwashing terminology/logic on you?
Soon they’ll have us thinking that MORE trash is GOOD and MORE FLUORIDE in the water is GOOD and excess is sexy and desirable and anything efficient or thoughtful (To our blessed mother earth) is FROWNED upon!
Its like Society today: If your SMART your looked down upon. No one encourages each other to go and “be cool and become smart”. SMART is not “cool”. Ignorance (like Homer Simpson) is king! Think about it? What comedy movies sell the best? Ones with Idiots played by (actually) smart people like Adam Sandler, etc (yeah, I dont like him much, though)
Its all about BLING BLING and how much fiat-paper-money you got in your wallet from working your ass off at whatever miserable job we’re lucky to have after everything has been moved over to Taiwan, China, Japan, Indonesia, India, etc.

BRILLIANT,if you use more GAS of coarse you will “save more gas”than one that doesnt USE as much GAS,but i guess they dont understand the logic of using LESS in the first place

this is PROOF that this site is a disinformation scam, who are they trying to fool oh yeah YOU!
June 21st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
THIS ARTICLE is a PRIME example of DOUBLE-SPEAK,look at how much fuel im saving driving my HUGE gas GUZZLING S.U.V. compared to a FUEL sipping aerodynamic car that uses LESS fuel.f---ING BRILLIANT,and to think some dumb ass hick is saying see i told you driving my big truck is better than a car,im saving more gas than you cuz PROFESSOR says so.

This article is proof this site is a scam. I agree with#19
See the type of dis/mis information is this site propagandizing.

How much of that cheap mexican gas is burned waiting for an hour – or two – or three – getting back to the United States?
June 21st, 2008 at 7:10 pm
My brother-in-law, whom I’m visiting at the moment at his home in San Diego — where he drives for a living — says the headline is bogus, as to the danger (though there is much cross border gas shopping)

June 21st, 2008 at 7:56 pm
yes people are getting killed
and at a much faster rate than last year
or could it be that its being reported on more
there are SOME, few but some people
here that are afraid of reporting
whats going on to the authority
people are still able to get gasonline no
matter what, the problem with the drug cartels
falling apart or the change of power and
control amongst them could be refelcted through
what we see as an increase of murders
which are linked to drugs and money, people
get out of line with the cartels and they get killed
they’re the ones involving themselves
they have an oldschool mafia mentality
where no woman, children or innocent
people get killed, well not all of them do that
there have been cases where they kill off a whole
peasant like family, hate to use that word to describe
them but these people are so poor they pretty much dont have a voice of their own so they get put to death without no one noticing them, like a lot of people in Iraq
just in their special case scenario, the mainstream media down here loves to report about it on a daily bases, similar to many done in the united states about gangs and drive by shootings or a school shooting, violence is everywhere in the world, Mexico is still very safe to live in, considering the area of course just like anywhere else, beverly hills, south central los angeles
so close yet so different
June 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Lets see…..
If I drive a car that uses 200 gallons of gasoline, then I am paying $800 dollars for that gas at 4 dollars a gallon.
If I drive a car that uses 400 gallons of gasoline, then I am paying $1600 at $4.00 a gallon.
800 or 1600…….which would you rather pay?
Sometimes common sense is not so common. Especially with eggheads.
June 21st, 2008 at 9:56 pm
not true at all,yes it is dangerous, but not to that extent, for people that want to do it,the best time to cross the tijuana san diego border is between 8 pm and 5 am,i live in tijuana, and use to fill up in san diego all the time, not anymore, our mexican gasoline is good quality because it is refined in the u.s anyway.i have a 4 cilinder subaru, yesterday i filed up my tank with 30 dollars,it is worth it if you know how to do it and were to go,just be careful.if you need asistance i can help you out.
my email is senlee75@gmail.com

This drug war will seep over into CA, AZ, Nm, TX giving the globalists a premise to invade Mexico and forming the NAU at the barrel of a gun. Most the folks on here have the NAU set-up going in the wrong direction.
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:49 am
This is absolutely ridiculous!! Look what the oil barons are doing to Americans!! People risking their lives to get Mexican gas!!?? Oh well; this is a sign of things to come!! People being so desparate that they will almost do anything to survive!! Thats what the globalist want to see though!! They love to see people in anger and turmoil and totally scared to death!! For they are the masters of chaos and evil and this is also what their lord lucifer loves!! He loves death and murder and poverty and ignorance and enslavements!! Oh my!! Get God into your life and have peace instead of being in confusion and mental torment!! How ironic it is that the Mexican gasoline is much cheaper than ours when their economy is in much more of an advance state of poverty and ruination (?) that even our is!! But then too; the globalist are preparing our demise like they planned the Mexicans demise 30 years ago as they forced them to come to America to break down our economy!! RESIST THE NEW WORLD ORDER AND THEIR COMING SATANIC MAKING ZOMBIE BEAST CHIP!! And while you are at it; get Jesus into your life and find peace!!

DONT BE SURPRISED IF YOU HEAR ABOUT WHITE PPL GETTING KIDNAPPED OR CAUGHT IN THE DRUG WAR CROSS FIRE. JUST LIKE THE UNITED STATES HAS THOSE CERTAIN PPL THAT WOULD LOVE TO GET RID OF ALL THE MEXICANS, MEXICO HAS THE SAME PPL THAT HATE IT WHEN “GRINGOS” COME INTO MEXICO. AND SINCE THE POLICE ARE SO CORRUPT OVER THERE, DONT EXPECT TOO MUCH OF AN INVESTIGATION. GAS IS REDICULOUS BUT ITS NOT WORTH MY LIFE. THOSE ARE MY 2 CENTS.
June 23rd, 2008 at 6:24 pm
dude in the top i am a mexican who studys in that dirty place that you gringos call home
i live in mexico i had been kidnaped no i think taht the gringos

June 23rd, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Mexicans are not very intelligent people.
June 23rd, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Hey “mexican power”,
Why do you bother “studying”, as you say, when you already know that your sorry mexican brain is never going to accomplish anything worth mentioning? Educating mexicans is a total waste of time and money. Better to give it to a White or Japanese, who might actually produce anything worthwhile.
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Mexico gas is definitely not worth it. its not as refined (less regulations there lead to “dirtier” gas) and can and WILL f--- up your car. who the hell wants to be shot in a crossfire or kidnapped?!? speaking of siphoning gas, i’ve heard of morons drilling holes into tanks. would be a good time to get a locking gas cap. even if u have to pop a switch from inside, a screwdriver will get that hinge open in .5 seconds
June 23rd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I’m not very good at math but I would be willing to bet the 50mpg. car is more economical than all the rest. Where the hell do these guys get their logic? It reminds me of the two brothers from Yuma. They were in the hay business. They would buy hay in Yuma for $ 7.00/bale and truck it up to Phoenix and sell it for $ 7.00/bale. After a couple years of not showing a profit they decided to buy a bigger truck.

Yet WE STILL pay $36k for a truck built in mexico when labor cost’s are cut by 95%!!! You motherf---ers explain that to ME!!! Talk about some buLLLs--- there you go!!!

my grandpa was in ww2 and when over in germany he drove a car that got 90 mpg and wanted to bring the car back to this country and they said he could but he had to leave the carburator in germany so wtf if you look at the patiants office records you will see there are carburators that get 250-300 mpg but the government wont allow these patiants so injoy the gas guzzlers that you drive everyday.
June 26th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
we pay ca. 1.50 euro par liter iin IRELAND (petrol\diesel):
that makes ca.9 dollars par gallon on tadays exchange rate:dollar to euro.
see how would the USA handle 9$ per gallon ?
June 27th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
One thing I dont understand is if crude is traded in $’s, and the $ is at a low, wouldnt the rest of the world benefit from cheap gas? But gas in europe is in unreal, I remember in 2002 it cost 75e (about $110) to fill up an M3 in Holland. Now it would be about $200 to fill up.
Go to Mainemilitary.com get NATO gas cans and stock up in Mexico.
