US police could get ‘pain beam’ weapons

The research arm of the US Department of Justice is working on two portable non-lethal weapons that inflict pain from a distance using beams of laser light or microwaves, with the intention of putting them into the hands of police to subdue suspects.
The two devices under development by the civilian National Institute of Justice both build on knowledge gained from the Pentagon’s controversial Active Denial System (ADS) – first demonstrated in public last year, which uses a 2-metre beam of short microwaves to heat up the outer layer of a person’s skin and cause pain.
‘Reduced injuries’
Like the ADS, the new portable devices will also heat the skin, but will have beams only a few centimetres across. They are designed to elicit what the Pentagon calls a “repel response” – a strong urge to escape from the beam.
A spokesperson for the National Institute for Justice likens the effect of the new devices to that of “blunt trauma” weapons such as rubber bullets, “But unlike blunt trauma devices, the injury should not be present. This research is looking to reduce the injuries to suspects,” they say.
Dazzle and burn
The NIJ’s laser weapon has been dubbed Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response – PHaSR – and resembles a bulky rifle. It was created in 2005 by a US air force agency to temporarily dazzle enemies (see image, right), but the addition of a second, infrared laser makes it able to heat skin too.
The NIJ’s portable microwave-based weapon is less developed. Currently a tabletop prototype with a range of less than a metre, a backpack-sized prototype with a range of 15 metres will be ready next year, a spokesperson says.
Torture concerns
The effect of microwave beams on humans has been investigated for years, but there is little publicly available research on the effects of PHaSR-type lasers on humans. The attraction of using a laser is that it can be less bulky than a microwave device.
Human rights groups say that equipping police with such weapons would add to the problems posed by existing “non-lethals” such as Tasers. Security expert Steve Wright at Leeds Metropolitan University describes the new weapons as “torture at the touch of a button”.

You can simply use the magnetron and power supply circuit out of a microwave, hooked up to an inverter and car battery in a backpack to accomplish the same thing. I don’t think the developers of this technology are using proper foresight, after all fair’s fair.
Of course you would have to put the magnetron out on the end of a stick or something, with an aluminum shield between you and it.
If you wanted to increase the directionality and intensity of the beam, it would be easy to add the 5/8ths wavelength vanes to guide the wave, (the more you use the better, but it will get bulky). Antenna technology is easy, and you can simply get the details about antenna directionality at a library or off the web.
Seriously, who do they think we are? a bunch of Arabs in a cave?
Before they use these terror weapons against us, they ought to first consider that it is the people of this nation that invented that technology to begin with – not them. They are walking on shaky ground as it is, with millions of guns on the loose. I think it would be better for them to not give us any more ideas . . . . . . . .

But this one was on a truck and when it shot a beam of an invisible ray; the person couldn’t stand it and had to back up and get away!! This was on 60 Minutes (of half truth) about 2 months ago!! Sure, the MICROWAVE is big and scary, and seems brutal since you’re essentially slow-cooking the person. In my opinion, any officer so equipped is not interested in making an arrest as much as torturing people to back up his power and authority positions in a situation. Jonathan, you , I or anyone teaching about our Constitution could soon be considered criminals, after all they have arrested folks for speaking publicly to others on what thier rights are according to the Constitution and what it says. I disagree with the idea of nation states, I believe in globalism. It is just a matter of whether or not the individuals in power abuse it or not. People here in the states are always saying “united we stand,” well national sovereingty is one of the greatest divisions of mankind, and as we all know divided we fall. It says Jon and I Quote ” I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same” So defending the Constitution comes first and foremost. SO what do you do when you are asked to do things against the Constitution by lets say the President? Do you up hold the Constitution or do you follow the Presidents orders?

Oh goodie! More toys for the adult children in costumes. Oh and Jonathan, does your sick little interpretation of utilitarian philosophy really take into account the basis of “doing the most good?” I suppose it does, as long as it aligns with your narrow-minded, high school level understanding of it. Your understanding of the founding fathers and the Constitution are equally elementary. If you think that they were for a centralized ruling government, you are hugely mistaken. In fact, that is precisely what they warned us to avoid.
It seems you have unquestionably proven yourself to be among the “narrow-minded ignorant masses.” Instead of listening to others who are of your same level of education, why not break from your pack and study on your own or even take a class or two. Oh, and reading Wikipedia doesn’t constitute an education – pardon the pun.

Your assuming God exists I suppose. And the NWO is not new at all, in fact it has been here just as long as every other philosophy, why is any other philosophy better than this one? The answer is relative to the individual, there is no such thing as right and wrong, or good and evil, they are just terminology created to express an indiividuals opinion on a particular issue. Your views are niether right or wrong and my views are niether right or wrong, they just happen to be what we have chosen to believe in. Trust me the military has nothing to do with my choices and line of thinking, they in fact completely disagree with me.

Are we all in agreement that the government is jammed with a bunch of people any psychiatrist would deem sociopathic?
I hope so because they’re just getting started with the evil they plan on letting loose on the nation and around the world.
