When
Alex Jones learned that World War II/Korean War Veteran Joe Campana
had been threatened with the demolition of his home of forty years
by the City of Austin, he rushed in to stand up to the city.
The
home was situated in what had become a very fashionable part of
Austin, and its "unsightly appearance" had led to complaints
from several neighbors. The City was threatening to bring in bulldozers
and to level the building to the ground.
Alex
and staff made sure that the city knew that they would be there
when the bulldozers arrived and that they would not allow the demolition
to take place. They made plans to repair Campana's home to bring
it up to "City Code."
Realizing
that the repairs would be extensive, Alex proposed: why not build
this great patriot a new home? Alex Jones put the word out on Austin's
airwaves and good people from all across the city came to participate
in the 100% volunteer effort to build the veteran a new home.
Thirteen
days later, Joe Campana had a brand new home right next to his home
of forty years. The home stands as a testament to the true American
spirit of the volunteers who joined in the effort.
We will never stand by when wrong is being perpetrated on our neighbors,
especially when a veteran who fought to defend our country in two
wars is under attack by aggressive city tactics.
