Attempt to vote for Obama selects Romney instead

A video currently going viral on You Tube appears to show an electronic voting machine erroneously selecting Mitt Romney when an individual attempts to vote for Barack Obama.

The clip, uploaded today, shows the voter repeatedly attempting to select Obama’s name on the touch screen but the machine keeps defaulting to tick the box next to Romney.

“I initially selected Obama but Romney was highlighted. I assumed it was being picky so I deselected Romney and tried Obama again, this time more carefully, and still got Romney,” writes the You Tube user who uploaded the video.

“Being a software developer, I immediately went into troubleshoot mode. I first thought the calibration was off and tried selecting Jill Stein to actually highlight Obama. Nope. Jill Stein was selected just fine. Next I deselected her and started at the top of Romney’s name and started tapping very closely together to find the ‘active areas’. From the top of Romney’s button down to the bottom of the black checkbox beside Obama’s name was all active for Romney. From the bottom of that same checkbox to the bottom of the Obama button (basically a small white sliver) is what let me choose Obama. Stein’s button was fine. All other buttons worked fine.”

The voter attempted to draw attention to the glitch but was told by a volunteer, “It’s nothing to worry about, everything will be OK.”

Judging by the name of the uploader, the incident occurred in Pennsylvania.

Some have alleged that the video is a fake because some of it appears to be jumpy, a claim addressed directly by the uploader, but this is by no means the first example of vote flipping.

In numerous states across the country, from Nevada, to Texas, North Carolina and Ohio, voters have been reporting vote flipping.

A woman in Marion County, Ohio had to select Mitt Romney’s name several times because the machine kept flipping to Barack Obama.

Voters in Guilford County, North Carolina experienced the exact same problem.

After members of the Republican National Committee in Nevada attempted to highlight vote-flipping problems, they were labeled “reprehensible” and Democratic Secretary of State Ross Miller dismissed the issue.

Perhaps Democrats will show more concern for vote flipping now that it is also impacting their candidate.
