Family members said McNamara died at his home in Northwest Washington. They did not give a cause of death.
McNamara was secretary of defense during the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Baines Johnson. In that capacity he directed a U.S. military buildup in Southeast Asia during the critical early years of a Vietnamese conflict that escalated into one of the most divisive and bitter wars in U.S. history. When the war was over, 58,000 Americans were dead and the national social fabric had been torn asunder.

The Vietnam War was based on the Gulf of Tonkin incident which, military generals have admitted was a contrived event in order to precipitate the war and create the war economy in this country. Well written, EnoughIsEnough. I lived through that period, as well. In the wake of WWII, it seemed for quite a while the masses were easily steered towards any government endeavor that was designed to quell Communist expansionism, no matter the cost. Many of us have awakened, since then. The irony is, most of the finished goods in U.S. households are made in a Communist country. Well, it sure seems, now, that the captains of industry stepped in it big time with their outsourcing policies.
The Fed has gotta go and, also, all government agents who refuse to protect and defend the Constitutional Republic of the USA.

I see here that many are celebrating the passing of Mr. McNamara. I was born in 1971, so I am not old enough to have truly “lived” the VietNam War. Although, I imagine my own disgust with Donald Rumsfeld’s actions could be likened to how/why people so disliked McNamara. No doubt, McNamara was an x-corporate CEO who likely had NO business in his role as Defense Secretary. However, in the interest of loving our enemies, let us consider the following: McNamara’s book, called Argument Without End, presents a critical oral history of the Vietnam War as reviewed not just by McNamara, but also by North Vietnamese officials who were still alive to meet with McNamara in the 1990’s. Though the dust cover of the book presents the notion that the Vietnamese also made mistakes, and the U.S. could not have “won” in Vietnam without genocide, the actual book seems to clearly illustrate that the majority of the “mistakes” were made by the U.S. For example, it becomes clear in the first 20 pages of the book that a blind spot for McNamara (and the JFK administration) was that they did not consider how events BEFORE the 1960’s could have had an influence on events surrounding S.E. Asia. I view this as a cataclysmic, astounding mistake that seriously undermided the quality of counsel McNamara could have ever offered either JFK or Johnson.
So, what were our other pre-war, pre-McNamara “mistakes” in SE Asia? (1) In 1945 Truman refused to respond to Ho Chi Minh’s direct appeal to the U.S. to assist it in crafting a Vietnamese constitution inspired by the U.S. Constitution! (for a number of selfish reasons). (2) We assisted the French in their war and recognized Bao Dai (placing us at odds with the Vietnamese and allowing the French to blackmail us so they would join NATO). (3) In 1954 Eisenhower minted the “domino theory” for SE Asia (which actually had more to do with a potential problem in Laos), but was later used as a justification for U.S. involvement in Vietnam (illustrating our ongoing mistake to asssume that Red China and/or the Kremlin had a much larger role in the region than they actually did) (4) From 1954 to 1956 the U.S. did not trust that the Geneva Accords could lead to a fair election (if ‘Communists’ were involved), so we installed our own puppet—Ngo Dinh Diem in our newly invented country of “South Vietnam.” (ensuring that the people of Vietnam could never trust the U.S. or it’s puppet government). (5) JFK, who hated to appear weak, had been trounced by Krushchev when they met face to face. So, in 1961, JFK’s ego perhaps guided him to decide that S.E. Asia was a place to take a stand against the USSR. Unfortunately for JFK, at least at the time, he failed to see that the USSR was the least of our problems in SE Asia. Later, it can be argued that JFK saw his mistake and was ready to reverse policy and leave Vietnam—which many obviously believe is a factor in his murder perhaps by our own government. And finally (6) as events unfolded the JFK administration continued to believe that North Vietnamese action originated from the Kremlin. Wrong again.
The result was that McNamara made the case that we were just fighting USSR Communism. And that we were not—as the Vietnamese assumed—the “new imperialists” who had just taken over the struggle from the French. Compared to American gaffes—this is VERY small in my opinion, especially as there were so many reasons for the Vietnamese to cultivate the perception of American imperialism. This is PAINFULLY clear to me when I read McNamara’s OWN book! In short, I posit here that McNamara’s arrogance was (and remained) simply awesome in it’s scope. However, blame for the Vietnam War or our mistakes in it reach well beyond his own massive missteps. It could also be argued that McNamara made some attempt—-with books like this—to reconcile this on some level. It can NEVER take away the pain and death of so many. However, it’s a hell of a lot more that LBJ did to accept any level of responsibility for this tragic chapter in U.S. History. I pray that Robert McNamara will go to the next world and use humble metacognition (thinking about thinking) to more fully understand the spirit of the mistakes that were made so, perhaps, his energy could be directed towards helping us create a world of compassion, love and forgiveness.
I realize that many on this site may wish to respond harshly to this message. After all, it’s easy to assume that McNamara’s PR campaign was undertaken for purely selfish reasons. Fair enough. I think that’s a very fair suspicion. However, remember this:
1. Those who do NOT understand history are doomed to repeat it. By studying Vietnam this way we have a real chance to stop the imperialist nonsense we are doing now by drawing parallels that will make sense to future policy makers.
2. If we hate our enemies, we become our enemies. Let us love our enemies. NOT by endorsing their actions, but by refraining to judge them and by trying to understand them so we can forgive and create a world in which we do NOT repeat those actions.
If we do, I think love can prevail. If we do not, another McNamara will certainly take McNamara’s place. Let us teach the next McNamara—-to be bigger than his predecessor. Let us not judge McNamara any more that we would a member of our own family.

McNamara was unrepentant New World Order scum who knew exactly what he was doing. There was never any plan to win in Vietnam and the Communist threat was created by the very same bankers and munitions companies who profited from the war. They centralize power and make untold profits at the same time, and McNamara was on board the whole. McNamara was a CFR member and president of the World Bank. He deserves eternal damnation and our scorn.

Why does the staff at InfoWars constantly feel the need to rewrite the headlines to stories?
I agree that McNamara was a war criminal – as even he admitted in FOG OF WAR – but The Washington Post did not refer to him as such in their article, and it’s really irresponsible to completely change the context of the story by altering the original title – ‘Terribly Wrong’ Handling of Vietnam Overshadowed Record of Achievement – to reflect Alex’s view of what it should have been called.
This is one of the reasons this site often comes across as being completely amateur.

(Aside from Vietnam, he was also behind the fire bombing of Japan during WWII, and held one of the most influential positions in the world.)
Your headline would be misleading as well, though, as he did repent in his later years.

My hatred for this man, there’s no way I could put in words. Vietnam was not just Kennedy’s and Johnson war, this was “McNamara’s war” and every man over there knew it. In 1967 McNamara said he had deep misgivings about wining in Vietnam, at that time casualties were over 7000. So, what does this so call “whiz kid” do, he tell Johnson just send more kids. Eight years later and 51,000 more America armed forces DEAD, the war ends. That’s 51,000 MORE DEAD!! thanks to this arrogant bastard. Vietnam kill president Johnson, but McNamara, get a big book deal, live to the ripe old age of 93 and dies peacefully in his sleep…… No frickin justice!
