Why do the police need masks?

It’s a balaclava, apparently. No doubt it will be described as essential protective dress. But looking at the video film and photographs of the “territorial support group officer” who has just taken his baton to Ian Tomlinson minutes before the newspaper vendor’s death, I’m wondering: why does a British policeman in pursuance of his duties feel the need to be masked?

There’s another mystery. In one still, Tomlinson is sitting on the ground before the police line, being aided by a stranger. There are eight helmeted officers and two dog handlers in shot. Of these, only three have balaclavas. Two wear the garment normally, covering the chin. The third, having stepped aside after his attack on the passer-by, has the thing high on his face, leaving only the eyes showing. And his shoulder tabs, the tabs bearing his police number, have gone.
That’s an old one. It is, of course, against all the rules. The number is there for a reason, in theory to the benefit of police and public alike should disputes arise. Traditionally, we don’t much care for masked and anonymous coppers in a country said to cherish the right to protest. After all, the forces of law and order, repositories of public trust, have nothing to hide.
Last weekend, disparaging some of the G20 demonstrators, I remarked that the Met and its helpers in the City of London Police had seemed just a little too eager for trouble. They were – they said so – “up for it”. The subsequent flood of complaints over policing methods was therefore not too much of a surprise. The handful of wee warriors – class, eco, whatever – who can confuse a smashed window with a smashed system were the perfect foil, Judy to Punch, for the Met’s media operation. But I missed one aspect of the ritual.

Umm..hey people, recent riots in Greece uncovered that undercover police themselves were wearing mask’s and provoking the police, as a result, large amounts of tear gas were used, in fact, so much tear gas, that they ordered a shipment from Germany (asap). Now if any of you out there have the ppl in the right places, you can find the flight manifest. As for the police, well they were caught on camera wearing hooded masks and while throwing bricks and rocks at the police, were later seen to be actually have a smoke with the riot police themselves.
Now i can bet my balls that no media, even like AJ show will EVER air such a video.

a few years ago Grannies Against The War or something like that held a protest in front of a church and drew a crowd of about 150. a lady who worked in City Hall was the scheduled speaker and as she spoke she recognized many undercover police in the crowd and began calling them by name. (it later came to light there were 14 undercover policeman in the crowd of 150 antiwar people.) well, the lady who outed the cops was brought up on charges and they were eventually dismissed.
this sort of thing is one of the reasons for masks i guess.

Just an idea; maybe those officers wearing masks are usually undercover officers used for infiltrating organized crime (drugs, weapon smuggling, etc.) but had to be called to uniformed duty b/c of the increased need for officers on the street during the G20.

Dippy, Casey is doing what is called Critical Thinking. In order to gain a full understanding of a particular subject, you have to look at as much information about it as possible.
Many protesters wear facial coverings as well. This shields them from what they think are government cameras taking photographs to use against them later as well as a mildly effective barriers against crowd dispersant such as tear gas. Those protesters aren’t criminals.
It seems as though since this website was mentioned in stories about the cop-shooter last week, an odd number of anti-police posts have been posted here.
Perhaps you didn’t stop to think that some of those police officers in masks are not police officers. Perhaps you didn’t stop to think that they need to shield their identities to protect their families.

Psychologically, a mask can and will seriously change the inhibitions of the person wearing it. This has been proven in University studies all over the place. If you have someone looking you in the face, there is a “normal” reaction that your ego has regarding the person looking at you. Like when you blush because someone said something that made you feel self-conscious.
On the other end of the spectrum, people will kill or behave in other very different ways towards others if they feel they are anonymous. That’s why cops wear masks.
Cops, think about this. You are supposed to be Protecting the Rights of the People under the Constitution. That’s what you SWORE an Oath to do when you were hired. Not to bully someone about smoking outside a red box at the airport, not to get your jollies tasering some teenage girl repeatedly because she’s hysterical as a result of the way you have been treating her for the last thirty minutes.
There is absolutely no legitimate reason for anyone in a Free Society to wear a mask that hides their face.

If they fail to identify themselves as police officers and are committing violent crimes, then yes, you as a citizen, and at your own risk, are fully permitted to step in and halt said crime, even if the perpetrator is a police ociffer in disguise. Cops doing crimes makes cops criminals, therefore assaulting them to stop the crime would appear to be a rational response (granted, I’m not sure how this flies in court…hopefully there be some vid cams on you while you carry this out…) If the cops are committing the crimes, then I suppose that leaves it up to the outlaws and rebels to do the law enforcement, somehow the definitions have been reversed, cop and police officer are now synonymous with “depraved criminal,” and “dangerous troublemaker,” which means that any negative label formerly cast upon your head now deems you a “peacekeeper.”

I imagine everyone on planet earth knows bandits/robbers and terrorists wear masks and why; because they don’t want their victims to be able to identify them.
The fact that we have allowed this in this country is almost as disturbing. I dare not say more for fear a such masked law enforcement officers will come an murder me for speaking up but, I think most Americans are waking up to who are the real terrorists; who we all should fear; who is most likely to rob, assault and murder us but the question is, what should we do about it, particularly when those we look to for protection and justice are the same people who authorize these kind of methods and tactics.
How many innocent women, children and old men such masked men have robbed and murdered is probably many times more than we ever hear about but again, what are we going to do about it?

The police wear masks to protect their identity Obviously. But it goes beyond that.
Wearing a mask can create a very strong feeling of dettatchment, thus enabling the wearer to commit acts they normally wouldnt, and further fall into the group mentality. IF THEY CANT SEE WHO I AM THEN IT ISNT ME! THEREFORE I DIDNT DO IT!

I know that it’s illegal to wear the uniform of a police officer if you’re not actually a police officer. I’m very well educated on such laws. It is not, however, illegal to wear a replica of a police uniform (providing you do not act or identify yourself as a police officer) which, in a riot situation, would not be very quickly identified as a replica.

That’s exactly what I was thinking and I’m surprised infowars hasn’t discussed the immensely convenient timing of this supposed new terrorist threat (which is reminiscent of the similarly OTT raids that took place when John Prescott was under suspicion for doing dodgy deals with a texan billionaire). This isn’t the wild west. Black uniforms have become quite common in more than just police departments. Many people feel that it looks quite good and professional.
That includes the black uniform I wear. The others in the same uniform with whom I work are just as professional and freedom-loving and US Constitution-abiding as I am. The police in the black uniforms that I work with regularly are as well.
There is nothing you can possibly say that will change that reality.

The ideas you expressed in your post have already been debunked with realistic truth. A good number of the anti-cop rhetoric posters on this story are only doing so to help keep your idealism growing and are not regular posters on this site.
Those of us who have been listening to Alex Jones and reading this website for years can all tell you just how anti-violence we all are.

The “uniform” is both utilitarian and designed to instigate fear right down to the colors. The mask in this case is to hide the identity of the officer so that he / she appears not human, mechanical and frightening. Also, this is to hide his / her identity from prosecution for the crimes against the people they are supposedly their to protect. What a joke. George Orwell was a visionary. I often wonder what these police officers are thinking in their minds when they send out undercover officers to incite property damage and trouble, at the same time using that as an excuse to trample on the vary rights they have sworn to uphold. All law enforcement and military personnel that are told to participate in activities that are intentioned to incite civilians to riot or to otherwise harm those that are engaged in peaceful dissent are doing the will of “The Beast” and not the will of God the Father. I suggest that any such persons that are ordered to engage in such nefarious work exercise their right on moral grounds to refuse to carry out such orders. Legitimately if one finds such orders to be sickening, then one might consider being relieved from their post for “illness”.
All persons will be “Judged” by their deeds showing their allegiance to the “The Beast” to their detriment or their refusal to be agents of “The Beast” to their benefit. Something to keep in mind.

Here in Montgomery County, Maryland, Police often switch (with other officers) or have alternative name tags to confuse the public or someone who is arrested and looks at the tag, from making a positive ID. and yeah, almost everybody knows about it. In Prince Georges County you can be killed and ‘Ha!!! to bad for you, all the video tapes mysteriously malfunctioned’. Just like the traffic video shut down in the UK with the G-20 Summit.

Shannon, here is Las Vegas, cops killed a man, and there was street cams that caught it. But, check this out. Some lady in the police department that knew she is not to touch the cameras, touch the adjustment, and threw the whole adjustment out of wack, that you can not tell what happened. She just got a “Reprimand” for it. Now, how can someone who knows they not supposed to touch any equipment, just decided to touch it? This is nothing more then she is taking the fall for it. My guess, is that the cops are going to do something for her down the road. I even sent a letter to the reporter that cover the story, telling her that she needs to follow up on this in the future to see if this women got a promotion or something. I even told the reporter, that this sounds fishy, but, the reporter said that she just reports what she is told. That is the problem with reporters these days, they dont dig anymore. What a joke….

1) To conceal their identity from witnesses.
2) There is a psychological effect when you encounter a face with no features. To face a small army of faceless enemy is a difficult challenge by itself.
3) That same face with no features is the effect that occurs to the people when they have no faces to associate with the perpetration of the crime upon us by [THEM], robbery, looting and raping our nation. There is a void of a place to focus our anger. They try to keep and perpetuate that void You can only get angry with that which you can identify. If you cannot associate the evil perpetrator with the act you have no focus for the angre and only frustration.
4) But the anger that builds from not having a target for that anger, by having a unidentified and unknown assailant is much of the source of the frustration felt by the people.
It is illegal but not unlawful to wear a mask that conceals your identity in public. Example: Wear one as a advertisement for a pizza place it’s OK. But wear one into a bank and your screwed.
We should all wear masks to any demonstration.
