Willem Buiter warns of massive dollar collapse

The long-held assumption that US assets – particularly government bonds – are a safe haven will soon be overturned as investors lose their patience with the world’s biggest economy, according to Willem Buiter.

Professor Buiter, a former Monetary Policy Committee member who is now at the London School of Economics, said this increasing disenchantment would result in an exodus of foreign cash from the US.
The warning comes despite the dollar having strengthened significantly against other major currencies, including sterling and the euro, after hitting historic lows last year. It will reignite fears about the currency’s prospects, as well as sparking fears about the sustainability of President-Elect Barack Obama’s mooted plans for a Keynesian-style increase in public spending to pull the US out of recession.
Writing on his blog , Prof Buiter said: “There will, before long (my best guess is between two and five years from now) be a global dumping of US dollar assets, including US government assets. Old habits die hard. The US dollar and US Treasury bills and bonds are still viewed as a safe haven by many. But learning takes place.”
He said that the dollar had been kept elevated in recent years by what some called “dark matter” or “American alpha” – an assumption that the US could earn more on its overseas investments than foreign investors could make on their American assets. However, this notion had been gradually dismantled in recent years, before being dealt a fatal blow by the current financial crisis, he said.

Deflation is here. How can an economist predict when the world will turn on its master. The depression is likely to be more severe in europe and asia, thereby making it suicide to trash the dollar. That is of course as long as the Big Bankers Rothschild don’t decide to cash out their treasuries, using the hoarded cash to buy both US assets and as much gold as possible. Don’t be surprised if they take the remaining US gold as partial payment. The folly of their fiat financial system has been exposed and neither Russia nor China will play that tune again. What the sheeple of the west want has no bearing upon the actions of their “elected” leaders. Some type of a partially gold backed currency will be heralded as the only solution, perhaps a two tiered structure whereby the sheep are fiatly paid while the elite use gold to attack hold-outs. You’ll think the new currency is gold backed but there will be no window in which to convert it, and you will be told to buy on the “free” market, greatly increasing their profits. Just because Keynes called it barbaric, gold has been valuable because man independently, throughout the world, instinctively turned to it as a store of value.

The only reason that the dollar has strengthened against the other currencies is because China and India combined shipped $3.8 trillion dollars back to the USA for payment in GOLD!
That took an equal amount of U.S. funny money out of circulation.

The collapse is obvious. You can’t borrow forever which is all we have done. New bailout by Obama at some 775 billion? Where does that money come from? Out of thin air, it doesn’t exist and never will.
Give it 3, maybe 5 months tops and its over. By spring it will be obvious to even the brain dead this system has failed. Federal reserve and IRS will fail also…good news is we can start over as the federal government fails, the federal reserve fails and the IRS? Screw them…LOL

The Dollar was well on its way to collapsing last year before the rest of the world woke up and noticed the financial boats they were floating were and are sinking faster then the U.S.’s financial boat. But that does not bode well for the U.S. dollar and U.S. economy going forward. We are all sinking into a world wide DEPRESSION and when that really hits the dollar like all other paper currencies will be worthless.

For BoBbarker…try Dr. Makow’s site, at http://www.henrymakow.com/ he might seem to be a little out there, but his essays have links to reliable primary and secondary sources that, for the most part, support the topics that Alex Jones discusses, among other interesting topics.
One of the things I like most about his essays, apart from the researchable links in the text, Dr. Makow also delves deeply into the roots and hidden agendas behind such things as feminism and how Gloria Steinhem was a CIA operative. Plenty of links to government docs to support his points.

Here’s some facts: The United States is the undisputed leader in innovations of ALL types. We the People are the foundation of the strength of our monetary system and only an idiot would underestimate this Nation’s creativity! The World emulates and copies US. Look at the Chinese: yep, they are only a powerhouse because We have made them that way! They have adopted OUR innovations, not their own.

And frankly, I’m a rough neck and i know i could survive in a world without commodities. I can hunt, and thank god I live away from a major city, because if anything ever happened, which i don’t think it will. Any area with a massive population would be screwed. The stock market is made up of lazy individuals who want something for nothing. Get outside people and cut some wood. Build something, make a green house and grow your own food.
