Kelly Jo Ivey’s voice crackled over the speakers in a Harris County courtroom Friday, a recording of one of hundreds of calls from the 30-year-old to her mother since her arrest a year ago in the traffic death of a sheriff’s deputy.
“I drive high all the time,” she can be heard saying.
The declaration brought a gasp from the courtroom gallery where family of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse Valdez III have sat for two weeks. Several deputies in the audience shook their heads.
Hours later, the same jury that convicted her of intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer on Thursday, sentenced her to 60 years in prison.
