BAY CITY, Mich. — Officials in central Michigan say a 93-year-old man who owed more than $1,000 in unpaid electric bills froze to death inside his home — where the municipal power company had restricted his use of electricity.
Neighbors and friends of Marvin Schur want answers as to how this could happen.
“Now that we do know it was hypothermia, there’s a whole bunch of feelings that I’ve got going through me,” said Jim Herndon, a neighbor of Schur’s. “There’s anger, for the city and the electrical company.”
Bay City officials said changes are on the way in an attempt to not let another instance like this happen again.

You hit it on the head! Let’s get something straight though. There are other methods to powering your home. They do take lots of Federal Reserve notes and knowledge. My power company gives me a shutoff notice if I owe them even 10 cents. It is winter here and they can not turn me off though lol.

Sorry to say, it doesn’t matter. This system doesn’t care about any of this. Freezing to death is better than the starvation thats coming, there will be many more like this poor soul before the idiot American public will take any notice. I have my doubts as to whether they will ever notice or not. My God they still don’t get it after everything that has happened and continues to happen everyday. Besides the people don’t care about their “beloved Veterans”, they put yellow ribbons on cars and squeal “support the troops” and then let the system and the VA rape them as soon as they get home… if they get home. 90% of the Veterans you ask will tell you this. I’ve been fighting them for years and still can’t get anywhere, what BS! As far as they are concerned, thank God he’s dead its one less Veteran we have to ignore or pretend we give a shit about to keep our sorry ass jobs that we can’t be fired from.

Obviously it sucks what happened. But how is the electrical company at fault- morally or legally? If someone doesn’t pay their bill it SHOULD get shut off.. shouldn’t it? Am I missing something? Otherwise everyone could just stop paying their bill and continue to receive electricity.
If you want to make the arguement that there should be some kind of government assistance system in place to help these people out.. then fine. I agree. Let the governent pay their bill, but the electric company should have nothing to do with that. They did nothing wrong.
Maybe blame the family. He was old. His family should’ve been looking over him.

I have mixed feelings about this article. I think both party’s are at fault here. Why didn’t the old man call his family or somebody to help him. Seems weird to me. It’s sad though when something like this happens.

January 27th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Well lets get this straight shall we, you want less government-but when someone feezes to death now you want company’s and/or government to help, have your cake and eating it too are we! it just shows we are not capable of fighting back. when push comes to shove most will give in to the ones who plot these things. lets say they gave him free gas/electric do you know how many other (needy) people would come out of the woodwork!
January 27th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Could be that if the old man did not ask for help,it was probably due to pride. There are many out there who still have a sense of pride about them and dont want anyones help. There are also many out there who would rather parish than come out say I cant make it anymore.
Now I do beleive that they should have a system in place that would alert the Power companys to possible problems such as this. One that could keep track of the elderly or even the disabled. It could send up red flag warnings that the person may actually need help. Hell send a rep out to check it out.
January 27th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Those Mother Fuckers ought to be strung up by the necks and hung on the town stree lamps.
January 27th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Heres another idea that could help. Its similar to a tax deferment.. If the elderly 65 or older are having a hard time with paying the bill. Let them setup a deferment arrangement. basically there would be a lien attached to the property and in lieu of payment.. Upon the persons Death or Upon the sale of the Home. The payments would be take out of the sale of the property to pay back what was owed.. Of course there would be simple interest applied. Its an option to think about. Ask your local reps if they have anything like that.
January 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
It’s obvious that the power company took no extraordinary action to determine if Mr. Schur had friends, family, fellow veterans’ organizations, local churches, et al, who could offer some form of financial support to prevent such an abominable death. I guess it couldn’t be justified on the company’s expense account..the act of taking time to actually HELP someone, I mean. Let’s face facts..we’re all just numbers on a balance sheet to these fiends. This was also a perfect microcosmic picture of the world, today; we’ve all been divided, desensitized. We don’t know our neighbors anymore. If someone approaches the average American with some need, the average American will advise the supplicant to “go to the government..don’t bother me”. It’s all very grim and heartbreaking. God pity us! Semper Fi, Chris in Colorado

These electric companies really have us over a barrel. In my state they sent us a letter last month telling us they are raising our elect cost. If you paid 110$ you’d now be paying 135$.. that or food? They say they are doing it to build a nuck power plant that will make it more environmentaly MO BETTER. I think that’s BS because you know they getting kick backs from the gov (obama’s eco-plan). I live in Fla and didn’t have the heat on one day in Dec. Use very little elect. and my bill was 92$. That’s like my usual summer bill with the AC on! My old winter bill was like 45$. It’s crazy. When summer does come and the heat is unbearable I guess my bill will be over 200$. I cant afford that. Many will die from heat stroke. Many of the old here are on a fixed income and cant breath without AC but cant afford to cool their homes. If there is to be a stimulus I’d rather see it towards our utilities than money to spend on more crap. Not that anyone really cares what I think. We’ll just have to think of something else I guess.
January 27th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
some places do have laws regarding this situation, when tempatures are below freezing, and prof of children or health reasons, disconnection of electric or natural gas and water most be postponed to a later date, once again these laws are not federal, so try not to miss your bills.

This is a outrage. Looks like his foreign enemies, didn’t get him, but the domestic enemies of the constituition did. It is truly a shame when our country or a company values a dollar over a human life. I did not know this man but he was my brother in spirit … perhaps he was anothers father, a son, or a husband. He fought for this country… and he fought for us. Why did no one care enought to fight for him when he needed us. We should all be ashamed. We should be ashamed that we spend more time on this damned computer than we do talking with each other and helping each other.
My thoughts and prayers to this this man and his family. At least now he wrapped in the warmth of his maker.

January 27th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
In Southern California I believe the utilities such as LA DWP have a low-income option for assistance (reduced rate). I wonder if this company has such a plan and if he applied for it. Here the utilities will make a payment plan, accept small payments in view of circumstances explained, etc. Shocking and sad.

We should all be ashamed that this was allowed to happen in our Country. He was a brother of mine in spirit, and we need to all stand up and never ever EVER let anything like this happen again! My war wasn’t WW II it came later, but had he not fought for us as many others did, we wouldn’t have anything left to lose. I am starting something in my home town, and I hope others follow my lead. I am going to sell screen printed T-shirts, and take the proceeds to help other vets in my home town. Hell, it doesn’t have to be T-shirts. It could be cookies or candy, almost anything inexpensive that folks would buy to help. We need to take care of our own, I don’t trust Corporate America or the Govt. to do that, so it falls on us. Anyone else willing to do the same thing? I hope so. It can and will make a diffrence.

Once you get home from battle, after you have laid down your life for the banker, and you have sacrificed your family and friends and job to help them kill children and women who’s’ only crime is that they don’t want to use their “Fractional Reserve Theft System”, they have no more use for you, and you are not worth shit to them.

OMG This made me cry. It’s totally crazy. Don’t you get it? THEY do NOT care what happens to us. We are on social security disability and I fear that will not last much longer, the way they’re talking. Whatever this man’s circumstances, he did not deserve this. It is time to form communities to watch out for each other. I still have a place to live, for now, but I would have helped him if I knew. Share what you have and go out of your way to help the unfortunate because soon you might be in their place. Look at all the pets that will be put to sleep because people lost their homes and are homeless themselves. We HAVE to get together and help each other. If someone comes knocking on my door because they’re hungry, I’ll let them in, even though I don’t have much. Time to think about survival and helping others, instead of looking to the gub. I plan on gardening and getting together with friends and family and helping others. I was never religeous but maybe, if there is a God, this is wahat he wants.

In an ideal world energy would be free, but it’s not. It’s a business. And a business cannot survive if it gives everything away for free. That being said, as long as energy distribution is a monopolized business I believe there SHOULD be some sort of system in place to keep this type of thing from happening. And it is my opinion that the responsiblity of that system being implemented and maintained should fall on the government, NOT the power company.

January 27th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
ok everyone lets take a look at the fact that most power infrastructure was paid for by the government initially and then turned over to private companies. This is in regard to nuclear power hydroelectric power and further back the coal type. So if we want to compare the so called need to pay for such things lets compare to law enforcement. how many people work for the power company vs. law enforcement etc. Then you could apply this same logic to many more obsolete worthless little government agencies. Then at least I start to wonder why do we pay power bills??? Shouldnt our quiet compliance with the government and its huge budget at least get us free water and electricity? Well no they only want control and could care less about their subjects wellbeing. Thats why you should support your local 81 and none of the fakers that pretend to work against the system. I would hope that somebody in that neighborhood could have interceded for the gentleman, but failing that, it would seem only decent that the utility could have put a little heart into it, and tried to talk to him about his circumtances. Where I live, the power board offers us the opportunity to add money to our bill for the sake of those who are unable to pay – I do it, not much, not enough to even miss or mention, but I’d like to think that this won’t happen here because of me and others like me who make that small contribution. I don’t even know the man, and I don’t have that much money, but I would have paid his bill – maybe someone else, up there, would too, if that utility earned the right to ask, but slapping shit on some old dude’s box and strangling him over the course of a few days isn’t going to cut it when it comes to earning the good will of the people they serve, and rate increases on top of rate increases isn’t either. I’m ashamed that there are actually people who post comments questioning the moral of this story – no one should freeze to death in this, the richest country in the world, no one, except perhaps those who let it happen to others for the lack of a few bucks.

How sad. We have to change this. Our senior cirizens need to be cared for not murdered by greedy poweer companies who shut off their electricity when it’s the dead of winter. God have mercy on us all. This poor man didn’t deserve this. Our country is doomed if we don’t change this. God himself will punish us.
“Deuteronomy 15:7 “If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother.”
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”
Jeremiah 22:13-17 “Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his countrymen work for nothing, not paying them for their labor. He says, ‘I will build myself a great palace with spacious upper rooms.’ So he makes large windows in it, panels it with cedar and decorates it in red. Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?’ declares the LORD. But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion.”
Isaiah 10:1-3 ” Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?”

This is why we should all sign up for the army because once you have killed, mamed seen your freinds killed and mamed this is what you can look forward to. Freezing to death in the country you helped defend whilst the politicians carve a big fat bird in their nice warm family home.
If the politicians want to argue let them fight too ! Let them serve and defend their words instead of getting the poor and ill educated to fight on their behalf.
Let it be known that over 2/3rds of Londons homeless population are ex combatants from the Falklands war. Thanks for defending our access to Antartic oil now fXXk off and die of cold in the streets of London. This is how we thank the people who would give their lives to protect us. The West is one big double standards Farce ! It’s not Facism when we do it, It’s not genocide when we do it and it is not lying when we do it.
I am sick and tired of our Lying politicians who are their to serve themselves and big business but do not stop for one second to consider the lives of those stupid enough to fight to make the politicians and bankers in this world a few extra bucks….
For Humanity to progress we must get rid of the people who thrive on conflict. (War mongerers, Religious leaders/manipulators politicians. – They no longer are needed and are defunked, corrupt and self serving.
If the government was really there for us we would not see war veterans freezing to death in the country they defended !

it’s part of the game… how else would you get people to sacrifice their lives? Only by brain washing. No one in their conscious mind would murder another human. We are taught from birth a bullshit lie about how we got here and what we need to do now to “protect freedom”… what a load of shit.
January 28th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Can’t you see it? They’ve already got Hospice to come in and
murder old people by shooting them up with morphine and
starving them to death.
Now they see it’s an old guy so they hit him up with high
electrical bills and freeze him to death.
The noise of the BRUTE is in the land. Don’t raise hell about
the power company, holler about why his neighbors didn’t
pitch in and help him. Of course perhaps the old fellow
would have rather died than be a burden on his neighbors.
I can understand that completely. His generation was one
of selfless sacrifice. Would to God we had more of those
type now.

While there is Federal money that’s available to assist such individuals, it’s almost impossible for most people to receive the money as there are too many rules and conditions attached to receive the benefit. I phoned the agency local to me and asked how this man could have gotten assistance.
The agency sets its own guidelines for disbursement of the Federal money. You must have a telephone (which many would sacrifice long before heat), you must be employed and the agency must have an “appointment” “available.”
There’s no doubt that this gentleman deserved help, but first you have to go to the state. No agency or 501c3 charitable organization will help until you have done that first. What is the capacity for a 93-yr old to hop buses and get around town to apply state assistance? Likely very little. Next, if you receive such assistance, the state withholds it until a community agency picks up any shortfall. The community agency can then simply ignore the request and use the excuse that they don’t have the personnel to meet the needs of the community. Then you have to reapply for assistance.
What’s most disturbing is the manner in which individuals say things like “keep up on your bill.” The economy is being purposely rigged so that 30% of individuals cannot mathematically do so. If the game is rigged, what’s all this about personal responsibility. They can squeeze us until 50% can’t afford the basic necessities of life and the other half of us will still take a despicable attitude as such.NIMB, so long as it isn’t me, et Al ad infinitum.
If the guy is 93, his working days are likely 30 years past. If he was an average joe, he could have scrimped and saved his whole career to eek out retirement and it still would not have been enough because the dollar has been artificially devalued while prices have increased dramatically. Who can plan for such an occurrence? What if the value of the dollar drops 400% in the next 4 years? Can you plan for that?
Is his fate a just dessert for living too long?
It’s not just the system at fault. It’s the people who allow it to continue, the people who have a “looking out for #1″ mentality. The people that support the system by using dollars and saving them, the people who work for employers as opposed to doing things themselves. It’s every person that sacrifices principles for comfort, it’s those who look to profit from the work and time of others. It’s those who have employees and condemn those people to an inequitable existence wherein these groups of people toil at poverty levels so that parasitic bosses may live well. It’s the fault of an unending array of persons who perpetuate this false system.
Currently we hear the politicians railing on about saving the middle class. Why is this so? Because if the bankers don’t give the politicians candy to give to the individuals (called “community leaders”) who enjoy small luxuries and an illusion of self-determination, the jig will be up.
No one is saying “save the poor” or “save the people from predatory beliefs and unjust laws” – we’re saying “save the middle class” as the poorest people freeze to death. As long as those who hold positions of influence, even within local communities, have their escalades and their hummers and can afford to eat at the local upscale food chains a few times a week, why would they care? They’ve had no epiphany in their lives that causes them to want to be humane to others. To these people, it’s a game, with winners and losers and as long as they falsely perceive they are winning, they don’t care about inhumanities or suffering of others.
If you check that box on your bill to help low income individuals, your contribution will end up in the pocket of a bureaucrat. If you donate clothes to the Salvation Army or St. Vincent DePaul or any of the other so-called “credible” charities, your clothes will be bought by a “smart” middle class individual who has no need for charity and can afford to buy clothes at the store. Don’t believe me? Look at the cars when you drive by the local VOA thrift shop and you’ll see nearly new ones sitting in the parking lot.
It ain’t just the Fed, people, it’s this whole parasitic class of people who could care less if your grandfather freezes to death or if your granddaughter can’t afford the basic necessities of so-called “civilized” life.

Great post “Common Sense”.
And you are right, that it isn’t just the gov/big business that is to blame.
The people all around us are just as bad.
In today’s greedy world, our next door neighbor can be a bigger problem than the Nazi’s running the show.

The opinions vary widely, but the truth remains the same – love others as you love yourself. You don’t have to be a Christian to recognize the wisdom of the words. If we would all do just a little bit more for the sick, lonely, old and otherwise needy people we know, the government would eventually run out of excuses for taking our money, and their greed and larceny would be laid bare, for all to see. He who has eyes, see; he who has ears, hear.

I got one for ya we use most of our roads for free kindof and they cost way more than utilities sure they need repair etc. but the fuel tax does pretty good even if the money is all fake. How bout the fact that if they kill off all these older people that arent rich where would us younger people. most people of the ww2 generation I talk to look at me like what are you waiting for the government fucked us all, go after them take the country back. Sadly most people who become great in our armed forces also loose faith in our system and become homeless just so they dont have to be part of our bullshit system. What they said today about in 2008 18billion dollars went to wall street ceo bonuses(thats a bonus not a wage) really throws it all into perspective. Every year it seems it is harder to be productive in the usa every year the standard of living seems lower I guess really the rich are just getting richer.

As a war veteran he was aware that paying his utilities or taxes was “funding AlQaeda” so he was waiting to “wash it” through a front company or church to avoid violating the Patriot Act!

Please stay on this news item. They will bury it if we don’t. I have done worn my finger tips out writing over it , but I need help. Michigan has to have their feet held to the fire. Every type of media known needs a letter or comment from you.
We all know it is illegal to turn off the juice in the middle of winter in nearly the entire northern hemisphere. The municipality of Bay City however is a hold out. Now they are caught in a very embarrassing situation with a dead war hero on their hands. The memory of Marvin Schur deserves better. We can make a difference in this one small case. So let them have it. They certainly have it coming.
The folks in Bay City don’t know any better and believe that it is completely normal to have their power shut off in the winter. I don’t think they actually believe that it is against the law in the entire rest of the nation. The monsters that created this situation and have perpetrated this continuing policy need to be dragged before the cameras and the bright lights of the truth. But they can’t do it alone. Even now the story is fading into obscurity. So help with your interest and letters. Let’s make the bastards pay!!!

Im fired up agin, nobody and no man who fought in World War II should have died under these circumstances. Maybe im just another young 30ish Veteran but I fucking understand basics. I come from a small town, in Illinois and decided to live at my last duty station Seattle.
But every time I come back to these fourms My Blood Boil’s a little more, and my blood pressure I can feel it rise in my veins.
No man who was an old warrior should have died for $1000.00 Period its a Matter of RESPECT for human life. I have alway been raised to respect my elders and I raise my kids to Respect Older people they are Tresures of Knowledge for all those who seek Experience, make no mistake about it.
Now for him to be a WWII vet make him a little bit special “I can feel my blood boil as I type” and for these SCUM BAG SOB to do this constitutes in my book manslaughter minimum charge 5-10years and im pushing for 1st degree Murder and were going to bankrupt the greedy SOB’s company and force them to fucking sell. I would love to contribute to a war chest for this, these fucking people have crossed the line and there very choice of words in the youtube video constitutes HIGH TREASON and is deserving of the appropriate punishment.
Now bear with me and read on! Notice that they said the house windows were frozen over right. They dont look Frost over now right? They took the Fucking Money he had on the dam table to pay the bill and turned the dam power back on Im willing to bet my last dollar on it.
Who ever is reading this, this far must be as mad as I am, so I urge you to write a hand letter to the MI AG’s Office and explain your outrage. This is a matter of human life, belive me when I say this, the man worked and fought his whole life and became a little unable to take care of things properly, someday it may be you and if we fight now we wont have to worry about this when we get old.

Ain’t no room for us in your alternative nation
It seems you’ve had control for much too long
Your greed and your dishonesty only add to my frustration
Can’t you see the powers that be
Don’t give a fuck about you and me
Somebody better say this ’cause there ain’t nobody trying to save us
Just enslave us and leave us hanging on a rope that they just gave us
Victim of your mistrust
You, your dance, your stupid cash advance
No, I’m not a vctim of circumstance
Not gonna leave my life to chance
Rape the harts of us, the artists
You reap the benefits.
Your pockets, they get fat
While our souls bleed
You’re getting away with murder
“Son, you failed to read the fine print”
Label whores like festering sores
Keep coming back, they got a deal for you
No it’s not just good enough to hate this
‘Cause we all know the ones in charge
Are all so shameless
And wasted energy on the hate defeats our purpose
Victim of your mistrust
You, you take, our livelihood at stake
And ain’t no fake gonna steal my cake
Our spirits much tough to break
Victims of your mistrust
Need to stop and read between those lines
Behind that smile the greed still shows in their eyes
That’s part of their disguise
Don’t believe the lies
The more I learn about your game
The less I wish to be involved with you another day
Just where do we fit in
It looks like we’ll never win
And with the next big trend, the cycle starts again
Don’t let them turn you ’round and fall out of trust
snot…lynn strait

Asd long as little boys
Will be used as dolly toys
For others to take the spoils of war they make,
Every criminal gang,
While sipping and tapping on their tang
Shall laugh eternally as each nation is a fake.

Where nations become united
As such criminal enterprises,
Exploit the stupid and divided,
Until everyone realizes,
Their death is sought and you’re invited.
All men who dress so funny,
And fight battles short-term and puny,
For made up fairy money,
Plundered where it’s not so sunny,
Their life wasted, is so very funny!
