You are being lied to about pirates

Who imagined that in 2009, the world’s governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy – backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the U.S. to China – is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto land, into one of the most broken countries on earth.

But behind the arrr-me-hearties oddness of this tale, there is an untold scandal. The people our governments are labeling as “one of the great menaces of our times” have an extraordinary story to tell – and some justice on their side.
Pirates have never been quite who we think they are. In the “golden age of piracy” – from 1650 to 1730 – the idea of the pirate as the senseless, savage thief that lingers today was created by the British government in a great propaganda heave. Many ordinary people believed it was false: Pirates were often rescued from the gallows by supportive crowds. Why? What did they see that we can’t?
In his book “Villains of All Nations,” the historian Marcus Rediker pores through the evidence to find out. If you became a merchant or navy sailor then – plucked from the docks of London’s East End, young and hungry – you ended up in a floating wooden Hell. You worked all hours on a cramped, half-starved ship, and if you slacked off for a second, the all-powerful captain would whip you with the cat o’ nine tails. If you slacked consistently, you could be thrown overboard. And at the end of months or years of this, you were often cheated of your wages.
Pirates were the first people to rebel against this world. They mutinied against their tyrannical captains – and created a different way of working on the seas. Once they had a ship, the pirates elected their captains, and made all their decisions collectively. They shared their bounty out in what Rediker calls “one of the most egalitarian plans for the disposition of resources to be found anywhere in the 18th century.”
They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed “quite clearly – and subversively – that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal navy.” This is why they were popular, despite being unproductive thieves.
The words of one pirate from that lost age – a young British man called William Scott – should echo into this new age of piracy. Just before he was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina, he said: “What I did was to keep me from perishing. I was forced to go a-pirating to live.”
In 1991, the government of Somalia – in the Horn of Africa – collapsed. Its 9 million people have been teetering on starvation ever since – and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country’s food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.
Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the U.N. envoy to Somalia, tells me: “Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury – you name it.” Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to “dispose” of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: “Nothing. There has been no cleanup, no compensation and no prevention.”
At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by over-exploitation – and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300 million worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia’s unprotected seas.
The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: “If nothing is done, there soon won’t be much fish left in our coastal waters.”
This is the context in which the men we are calling “pirates” have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a “tax” on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coast Guard of Somalia – and it’s not hard to see why.

No, this doesn’t make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters – especially those who have held up World Food Program supplies. But the “pirates” have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason. The independent Somalian news site WardherNews conducted the best research we have into what ordinary Somalis are thinking – and it found 70 percent “strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defense of the country’s territorial waters.”
During the revolutionary war in America, George Washington and America’s founding fathers paid pirates to protect America’s territorial waters, because they had no navy or coast guard of their own. Most Americans supported them. Is this so different?
Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn’t act on those crimes – but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit corridor for 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, we begin to shriek about “evil.” If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause – our crimes – before we send in the gunboats to root out Somalia’s criminals.
The story of the 2009 war on piracy was best summarized by another pirate, who lived and died in the fourth century BC. He was captured and brought to Alexander the Great, who demanded to know “what he meant by keeping possession of the sea.” The pirate smiled and responded: “What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you, who do it with a great fleet, are called emperor.”
Once again, our great imperial fleets sail in today – but who is the robber?
Postscript: Some commentators seem bemused by the fact that both toxic dumping and the theft of fish are happening in the same place – wouldn’t this make the fish contaminated? In fact, Somalia’s coastline is vast, stretching 3,300km (over 2,000 miles). Imagine how easy it would be – without any coast guard or army – to steal fish from Florida and dump nuclear waste on California, and you get the idea. These events are happening in different places but with the same horrible effect: death for the locals and stirred-up piracy. There’s no contradiction.

If this is the truth…
I agree that our ships should be relocated to the offending nation’s shores. There, they should demand the ransom and deliver it to Somalia. Somalia should be studied and aided. There are enough international organizations that can band together to form the aid. Relocate forces there for strictly humanitarian and restructuring reasons. It’s only fitting that the nation has collapsed and many more may not be far behind it.

if they are starving, why would the pirates take over a ship filled with aid (food & supplies) for their region, yet leave all the supplies and only take the captain? what staving person, stealing to eat, would leave food?
they steal for ransom. there isn’t a worthy cause. they just want the money. if there was a cause, ships would be sank, goods would be stolen and sailors would be killed or at the least mistreated. instead, the pirates just take a someone captive and wait for a ransom. in most cases, its cheaper for the shipping company to just pay the ransom, than fight the pirates. in this case, the pirates messed w/ the wrong country. we sent the navy.

Piracy: this is a social response to a form of oppression of the society itself. However, the Somalian people are the ones who let the nations destruction occur in the first place. They should be looking internally for the problem that truely needs to be addressed and fix it themselves. Instead, 70% of the population has decided to hide behind piracy. It doesnt matter what injustices are occuring in the region. The fact is that every nation has internal issues that need addressing. This is no different. In order for piracy to stop, the nation must strengthen itself to the point of not being in a position to be taken advantage of. No amount of help from an outside nation or source can make these people stand up for themselves and stop being victemised by the tyranical abuse of resources.
Until Somalia realises that they must re-structure a form of government. there will be conflict based on the fact that other governments will TAKE what is not protected by political statutes. The military forces in the world today do not respect nor bow down to opposition of such an annoying level. They will simply crush the opposing force and look away as if nothing happened. Example… Georgia and Russia. Now picture this Pirates VS. Navy SEALS… This blood shed will not stop until the situation in Somalia is fixed from the inside.

Sixty Minutes Australia did a story on the Somali Pirates. What a poor and desperate nation. No wonder it is full of desperados prepared to hit the wild sea and die if they have to. It appeared, from what came out at interview with the main organiser of the pirates, the spoils are divided among the pirates community. I’m not saying that what they do is right, only that there appears to valid circumstances behind it. Somalia needs help, right now or there will be more victims of this desperate people. It is just so unfair that just some of us get to rise and shine on an Easter morning to hot cross buns and chocolate bunnies, while there are people elsewhere who eat dirt and drink contaminated water; the literal living dead. It stinks. It really stinks. I wish I was filthy, utterly obscenely wealthy, so I could make life better for those who suffer.

For your information it was about how the pirates are driven to this desparate way of life in response to their circumstances. The writer clearly has read and understood the article and has articulated his point of view well. I agree that it would be nice to be wealthy enough to help these people. Great article. All one has to do to see what the original pirates went through is watch the first Mutiny on the Bounty with Clark Gable from the 30’s. Many of the merchant seamen back then were kidnapped or as they called it “conscription” from bars, pubs, street corners etc. Seriously watch that movie (the one from the 30’s not the 60’s) and you can see what these poor men and their wives went through. When the Protestants split from the Catholic church they continued on with these same abominations so much of Christianity is polluted with Sun god worship and is actually teaching things that are completely contrary to the Bible. God actually commands us to ” learn not the way of the Heathen” in Jeremiah and to come out of Babylon in Revelation. As far as Horus being crucified on Passover, this is impossible because the story of Horus predates Passover and crucifixion was a common method of execution in many cultures, the Romans adopted the worship of Mithra the Persian sun god and crucifixion was actually an offering to Mithra, this is also where the cross came from which actually has it’s origins in Babylon also, dedicated to Tammuz of course. I could go on but the point is all these things are easily explainable. The problem is people who dismiss the Bible when they don’t even know what it says which is the definition of willful ignorance, this also applies to people who call themselves Christians who in celebrating Christmas and Easter are actually participating in watered down Sun god worship, by the way Easter is the name of the Babylonian fertility goddess.

Back in the late 80s and 90s there were six big oil companies operating in the area. Turf wars were started by, you guessed it, mostly the US. These so called turf wars were used to move the people off of the land which held the oil.
The same scenario happened over and over in many parts of Africa for exploitation of one resource or another. Do any of you remember when shell oil tried to corner the world market on uranium in the 60s? They were operating in Africa then, and on a large scale. it has been going on like this ever since the dark continent was opened up by the civilized world. Hey the IMF is going to get something like $100 billion or more from industrialized countries to ‘help out’ those poorer countries once more. It sounds a little more like double-take. I was watching CBS evening news today and really it was almost laughable how the U.S. navy has to follow certain protocols of the sea to try and rescue one man from five men in a dingy. First rule: The navy cannot attack/board a pirate ship unless the captive is in a state of immediate physical threat; second rule: a navy cannot board/attack a pirate ship only if it is fired upon first or when the pirate ship shows/uses threatening signals towards a navy ship.

This article is very thought provoking. We need some independant study to verify nuclear waste dumping into the ocean. If the illegal toxic dumping can be proven, I think it could prove to be a a huge scandal…. with huge political ramifications.
Look at it like this… if the depression in America gets bad enough to where the only way to get food for your children is to illegally hunt wild animals… is it morally wrong to hunt to feed your family? Is it morally wrong to live in a tent on national forest land when you cant find a job to support yourself?
Is it morally wrong to resist against a tyranical government? When your life is on the line and you have nothing left to lose, and for generations your family has been oppressed and killed, is it morally wrong to stand up for yourself and take what you need to survive?
If the answers to these questions is yes, then the people who resisted European rulers to come over to America and start a new independant country were morally wrong too. They were morally wrong to resist European rule, and kill European soldiers, and take Indian lands.
Are the pirates morally wrong to inturrupt international trade and take over cargo ships and demand money for hostages? I don’t know ’cause I don’t know the pirates side of the story. However, keeping an open mind for a minute, this article does seem to shed some light on the Somolian pirates motives.
I think we need to realize that the New World Order doesn’t want any kind of resistance to it’s power grabbing. So they need to vilify anyone who stands up to them. They can justify taking over the world and financially enslaving the globe. Anybody who resists the powers-that-be will be looked apon as terrorists and then justifiable manslaughter will ensue. There is alot of psy-op warefare going on… and it’s easy to get brainwashed into thinking a certain way if we don’t hear the whole story. Why don’t we see interviews with the Somolians and see why they are doing what they are doing? We only see what our press will allow us.
I don’t blame the Somolians for doing what they are doing if the fishing and nuclear dumping story is true. They are reacting like any one of us might if we were being starved out, and someone was dumping nuclear waste in our backyards and we were dying because of it… Think about that. Never criticize a man ’till you’ve walked a mile in his shoes. I’m not trying to say the pirates are justified in what they are doing. Anytime violence is used in the world it goes against God’s laws for mankind. However it might be justifiable if we heard the whole story, and then we could come up with a diplomatic and humane solution to all the violence.

I have been reading about the Somali pirates in mainstream media, but reading this article has opened my eyes to what the mainstream propoganda machine isn`t telling us. I praise Alex Jones for his work & am proud too feature a great deal of his content on our web tv station http://www.nocstv.net .
As Alex has said, we need to ring the alarms & wake up the people before it`s too late. Airing Alex` content on our tv channel is only one way that I can do my part in sounding the alarm.

Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn’t act on those crimes – but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit corridor for 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, we begin to shriek about “evil.” If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause – our crimes – before we send in the gunboats to root out Somalia’s criminals ALEX!!!!!

This is far from being a new problem, in an article from 2001 the writer calls Somalia the World’s Most Attractive Illegal Hazardous Waste Dumping Site and the pollution at that time was already over a decade old.
Going back even further, this abstract from 1999 discusses a meeting in 1991 that discussed how difficult is was to patrol 3333 km of coastline. At the time over 400 huge ships were illegally fishing the coast of Somalia to the extent that the local fishing industry was near collapse. It has since completely collapsed leaving the locals with no source of food or income. Illegal dumping was also discussed, and “2 Companies were named as perpetrators include an Italian firm (Progresso) and Swiss firm (Achair Partners)”
A story from 2002 names Acher Partners of Chapelle-sur-Moudon, in Switzerland as an illegal dumper.
2005
The very company hired in 2005 to patrol the coastline has been link to government contracts sold by the ousted Somali Transitional Federal Government, which is temporarily based in Nairobi, to escort ships traveling through Somali waters. The ships they were escorting seem to be the same ships that are carrying waste from Europe.
No wonder the Somalian people are ticked off enough to become “pirates!”

If the pirates were beyond the 12 mile limit then they are according to the laws of the sea in international waters therefore the US Navy can deal with them under the laws aginst piracy I served for nearly a decade in the US Navy from 1977 to 1983 then back in nearly 12 years later during my first tour I sailed the China Seas and we had the right under maritime laws to stop and if need be punish pirate aboard a ship ie hang em high or hang em low read the Tom Clancy novel were such a incident sans the hanging takes place.

I lived and worked in many places and one place was Indonesia. I don’t do work for multi-million dollar international corporations nor do I contract myself out for government work. My work basically consists of helping kids that had the fate of being born in less than ideal circumstances & situations on this World.
As far as Indonesia goes and pirating; there is alot of pirating in that area from Indo and Northward up near Thailand. This also involves fishing boats and large fishing vessels coming into Indonesian territorial waters and not just illegaly gaining accees to natural resources but, also the fishing methods are extremely questioable to say the least. Indonesia does not have enough of a patrol fleet to patrol that country’s entire territory.
If, and it looks as if there is sufficient evidence to work from…there is illegal dumping and/or illegal fishing taking place inside Somalia’s coastal areas, the appropriate body should have or should be doing more to stop this type of behavior. Higher profits can be easily made if a contract is signed or a deal is made whereby a ship agrrees to take ‘toxic’ material to an appropriate disposal facility but instead decides to throw it overboard so as not having to pay any disposal fees. Toxic garbage is a hazard to the entire World community.

Not one can help He who will not help himself. A change will not occur, in fact, this world will see uprising on a level not observed for years. Piracy: this is a social response to a form of oppression of the society itself. However, the Somalian people are the ones who let the nations destruction occur in the first place. They should be looking internally for the problem that truely needs to be addressed and fix it themselves. Instead, 70% of the population has decided to hide behind piracy. It doesnt matter what injustices are occuring in the region. The fact is that every nation has internal issues that need addressing. This is no different. In order for piracy to stop, the nation must strengthen itself to the point of not being in a position to be taken advantage of. No amount of help from an outside nation or source can make these people stand up for themselves and stop being victemised by the tyranical abuse of resources.
Until Somalia realises that they must re-structure a form of government there will be conflict based on the fact that other governments will TAKE what is not protected by political statutes. The military forces in the world today do not respect nor bow down to opposition of such an annoying level. They will simply crush the opposing force and look away as if nothing happened. Example… Georgia and Russia. Now picture this Pirates VS. Navy SEALS… This blood shed will not stop until the situation in Somalia is fixed from the inside.

While I commend the writer of this article, I have to say that “been lied to” is an understatement. Just a few days ago I was conversing with a friend who is also an info warrior, and an informed Citizen. We discussed how recently every manufactured event that you can think of is been tossed into high gear. All of which have taken place in a matter of weeks and in unprecedented ways.
. The crash of the economy, “we need a global solution”
. The crash of the dollar, “china is the new superpower”
. Unemployment rate approaching 9% nation wide, 700,000 jobs lost in March alone.
. Constant threats of another great depression loom over every American family.
. Unimaginable tax hikes, 15 trillion dollars of new dept, triple the size of the Federal Government. Not a problem, China “our new Masters” will pay for all of it.

Unexplainable mass shootings all over the country, “sounds like someone in D.C. needs a pretext for massive gun control legislation” All this while California releases 5,500 convicted felons because “the State can’t afford to house them in the jails any longer” Coincidently enough one of those newly released felons shot and killed four Police Officers just days after his release. Two years ago the European Union introduced new Laws against dumping nuclear waste off the African Coast.
