As of yesterday YouTube has replaced its list of ‘Most Viewed’ videos on the site’s ‘Videos’ section with a varied selection of sponsor-friendly videos that the site calls ‘Most Popular’. Where users normally see videos with high view-counts that have become popular due to viral spreading and community activity, we now see videos like the new MacBook commercial that gets showcased on the ‘Most Popular’ #1 spot while having very low view-counts and even lower ratings. YouTube will no longer give massive exposure to its community’s video productions and instead is now tightly controlling its Videos pages to attract more sponsors and a more mainstream audience.

The consequences are drastic, YouTube’s ‘Videos’ front page used to give its community so much exposure that it allowed the instant birth of global grassroots movements such as Anonymous and that it was even a deciding factor in the 2008 US presidential elections as it was constantly being flooded by Obama speeches and fan videos. YouTube’s decision to finally move the site into a more profitable direction is understandable, since the Google-owned company has long been struggling in this area. But it is a great loss for (what used to be) Internet celebrities, online communities and activists around the globe who found YouTube to be the only platform for such massive exposure at no cost but of their own creativity.
UPDATE: Shortly after the release of this article and our already very popular video on the subject, YouTube has put its ‘Most Viewed’ back as default Videos page. However, YouTube contacts say they may switch back to the new system, spread the word, digg it, make videos, let YouTube realize how important we feel this is.

listen, you tube is boring anyway, i have seen all the we are change videos, those were entertaining but not violent enough.. Alex needs to be more violent too . the we are changers are losing their ratings because they are not violent enuff.. The audience wants blood gore and sex. Sex is real good.. How come there are not enough hot looking patriot chicks?? okay truthers.. we know what we need to do now.. MORE VIOLENCE… MORE GORE….. MORE SEX… this will get us the attention we need. As a business, Youtube HAS the RIGHT to make this move. We may not like it. I don’t. You don’t. HOWEVER, it is their prerogative to do so if they so chose. It’s really not much different than a website such as IW selling ad space.
SItes like Youtube need funds to stay active – especially with such enormous bandwidth demands. Such requirements are not cheap to maintain.
BUT….that said…..perhaps they should move the ads into a “Sponsored Videos” section instead of labeling them “Most Popular.”

So it looks like YouTube is going the way that Geocities did and all the other services that existed in the 90s that where free and fun. Corporate control will strangle youTube until it becomes absorbed as some other faceless feature as part of a package you have to pay for.
Oh well, time to find a new hosting service that won’t suck the corporate wang as much.

That’s such a dumb comment. Violence may be required but only after all other measures have been taken and the situation absolutely calls for it.
While these videos you mention may bore you, they must still exist until we get enough people awaken and educated enough to do something.
Those who simply want “action” and want to see some “bllod, gore and sex” are in need of some serious maturity and really do not have any real commitment to the overarching cause of Liberty.

and found so many idiots, example, a 10sec vid, on a girl farting, had over 1mil hits…WTF, there are some very sik puppies out there.

Far From Over, I understand what you’re saying, but YouTube is a brilliant research tool. Some of the s--- that’s on YT, if it weren’t, would be next to impossible to find. Yeah there’s tons and tons and TONS of garbage on YouTube. A couple months ago I was watching some Steven Greer clips, archived Alex Jones shows and some Bill Hicks and George Carlin for a blog I was writing, and got bored. So I decided to check something out.
Doing a search for the word “beer” I found the “Lego Beer Song” vid, not even funny, and with over six million views. Then I searched for New World Order, and the highest viewed video was under 200k. In other words, people are f---ing stupid. But YouTube is useful for more than sheople looking for mindless entertainment.

YouTube has some amazing videos on it. There are instructions on doing certain things, videos of guys playing classic songs on guitar and piano, conspiracy videos, etc.
It still is a great place if you ignore the garbage videos that are on there.
It was inevitable when Google bought YouTube that it would become watered down and censored.
Google is a BIG corporation now and is a part of the establishment who want to keep certain messages and ideas out of the mainstream.
Sure, someone can start up some small new site, but people go to YouTube. People who want to find true information will find it regardless of those who try to hinder it.
The masses won’t wake up unless they make their own effort and are ready for it, no matter how much you show them.

I discovered this site and 911 Truth and We Are Change and everything when I clicked on the most watched video which happened to be WTC towers falling. The power of YouTube is tremedous, however this year I have noticed that some videos play very slowly or not at all, especially when they are linked from infowars.com. I don’t know if this is a technical issue as in that particular serever becoming overloaded or if it’s deliberately throttled. The effect is the same, the video I want to watch does not play for me and thousands of other people.
The removal of most watched is probably an attempt to solve a problem. If too many people watching the SAME video is an issue then having a most watched link is just going to make the problem worse.

I was permanently blocked from having a YouTube account. The only reason I can figure is that I was just too effective at countering all the propagandist, empty rhetoric espoused by various idiots, gatekeepers and agents in the comment sections.
Upon contacting YouTube about this issue, I recieved no response. Was this just some individual at YouTube that got tired of hearing my rational, reasonable and convincing discourse, or is this something more broad and nefarious?
Has this happened to anybody else?

I still don’t get it that nobody or no group in the open source community yet has made some piece of software combining the eMule/eDonkey2000 and/or the bittorrent protocol together with a nifty webinterface in order to get an open source network up and running with the same functionality als youtube. I assure you it would be hugely popular, totally free (as long as the project owners will not go the same way as in the previous XWindows project, but hey, that can be forked too), and superfast to download, at least for the REAL most popular videos.
All the movies would be distributed over all the subscribers’ computers.
No expensive central infrastructure needed.
I don’t see why this wouldn’t work.

Frank, I like your spirit, but that isn’t necessarily a good idea. eMule and eDonkey are both notorious for spreading viruses and other malware as well as having to deal with mislabeled files, shoddy connections, wait times, and a generally antiquated system. You’d also have to deal with streaming videos of various type from one of these networks. These networks are not fast enough to handle streaming in the first place, but one of the reasons youtube and google video work so well is because they convert whatever type of video file that you send them into a flash video, which loads rather quickly in a streaming situation. I think that the open source community would have to come up with their own new systems entirely to compete with youtube, but remember, just because it’s open source doesn’t mean that it’s non profit, so even an open source solution to youtube could end up doing the same thing.

Funny how #2 on Most Viewed is a video called “Jizz in my pants” from a mainstream company.
This is digusting… double standard anyone? YouTube changes it’s rules to “algorithmically demote” “offensive content” (which they only use for political speech), and a video with this crude, vulgar title is right on their main page for anyone to see. Guess it is ok to have disgusting titles and language as long as you pay the corporate whore to do it.

I haven’t read all the former comments so forgive me, but I have noticed for about 4 months now that YouTube is censoring. I happen to have an interest in planet x/nibiru, and so go to youtube periodically to see if some new pics have been leaked out of the SPT (south pole telescope). So many vids would pop up daily on this subject over the last couple of years, but now, it seems the subject only pops up a few vids, and those vids are just a joke. I do not believe that suddenly there is nothing of valued interest on this subject anymore. Has anyone else run into a shortage of informative vids on youtube in matters that are controversial?

We the people were what made You Tube great..Now just like rock N roll and anything else worthwhile it will be sponsored by “Bud” or some concept at least as ridiculous…

funny how people are still commenting this article like its correct information wise, without a thought of checking youtube. While most popular is there, so is most viewed! maybe people complained, maybe the article was written in between upgrades, idk, but people should check out info before believing it all, yet some people just eat it up!

I never could see the sense of YouTube. This is the 21st century. large screens and HD video. In my opinion the image quality of YouTube’s proprietary “Flash” video is worse than the first TVs of 60+ years ago!! Today you have HD WMV and HD DivX and several other high quality codecs with VERY nice full large screen display … and then try to watch YouTube’s pathetic blocky video Anything larger than 20 percent of screen size and you might as well be listening to an audio file because there is NO recognizable video image! … I never did get the YouTube thing! The concept was good but the implementation was horrendous!! Now about all you can find for video on-line is pathetic proprietary flash video. Talk about taking a GIANT step backwards!! I saw good riddance!
