On April 2, 2014, Fort Hood was once again the site of a deadly mass shooting perpetrated by a disgruntled soldier.

The shooting left 16 wounded and four dead, including the shooter, 34-year-old Spc. Ivan A. Lopez.

It was the post’s second such shooting in five years. Like 2009 shooter Nidal Hasan, Lopez used a handgun purchased from a local gun store in Killeen and brought it on post against Army regulations.

According to data from Fort Hood, Lopez’s possession of an unregistered weapon on post was far from an isolated incident.
