Armed police swooped on a wild west-themed wedding party after mistaking toy guns carried by revellers for real firearms.
Cowboy fans Roy and Val Worthington decided to treat their friends to a hoedown after renewing their vows to mark 25 years of marriage.
But after donning their Stetsons and holsters the group found themselves surrounded by a posse of crack armed police.
They were also astonished to see a helicopter circling overhead as they made their way from the church to the pub to kick off their party.
The cavalry had been sent to the village of Castle Donington, Leicestershire, following reports of ‘firearms’ in the area.
But the only weapons embarrassed officers found when they moved in on the couple and their guests were the toy guns hanging from their belts.
Yesterday the shocked hosts, both 47, slammed police for wasting thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money to check out a fancy-dress bash.
Incredibly, mother-of-three Val contacted the force months ago to alert them to the party in a bid to avoid the very scenes that unfolded.
She said: ‘Because of the gun laws, I phoned them in November to tell them we were having this themed do. I didn’t think any more about it.
