A local firefighter’s association says the lack of an American flag on the 9/11 Memorial Plaza shows the site has become a tourist attraction instead of a sacred memorial, the Record reported Monday.

The Bergen County Firemen’s Home Association has recruited the president of the state firefighter’s association to call firehouses across New Jersey to push for more flags on the site.

Members of the group don’t like the idea of the Plaza being treated like a regular city park—they view it as a cemetery. Glenn Corbett, a Waldwick resident and member of the Bergen County Firemen’s Home Association, filed a petition Friday asking the White House to get involved.
