McDonald’s regulars in Japan have lost their appetite for the fast food.

A health scandal that surfaced in late July in China has not only forced the suspension of some food items at McDonald’s restaurants in the country, but it has also critically damaged sales in Japan.

McDonald’s Holdings Co. (Japan) said Sept. 9 that sales at non-new shops for August plummeted 25.1 percent year on year, the steepest decline since the hamburger chain operator listed its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2001.

The company had already been struggling to lure back young consumers who have become reluctant to buy at McDonald’s outlets.
