Chinese troops are preparing to deal with an influx of refugees on the North Korean border and have been learning Korean so they can shout orders such as, “don’t move or I’ll shoot!”
Sources familiar with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) told the Yomiuri Shimbun that soldiers have been ordered to memorize phrases such as “stop” in Korean.
“The PLA is teaching Korean to soldiers near the North Korean border in case North Korean refugees start flocking into China if a military conflict arises between the U.S. and North Korea,” the newspaper said.
The lessons are being taught by ethnic Koreans living in China and are taking place throughout the Chinese-North Korea border.
As we reported on Monday, China has also ordered the “urgent” recruitment of Korean interpreters on the border.
Beijing is “bracing for an emergency situation” arising out of a “possible military clash between the United States and North Korea” which would trigger a “huge exodus” of North Koreans fleeing to China, according to a leaked document.
In what is being described as a “rare move,” Pyongyang directly criticized China, warning that its stance could trigger “grave consequences”.
China has recently shifted blame for the ongoing crisis to North Korea, signaling that Beijing may be willing to desert its ally if hostilities reach boiling point.
