The funeral of Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, Iran’s most senior dissident cleric, turned into another anti-regime rally on Monday in the holy city of Qom, with mourners chanting “death to the dictator”.
[efoods]The 87-year-old cleric was once the designated successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic revolution.
But he fell out of favour with the regime and in recent months has been an outspoken critic of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemning the post-election clampdown by security forces on protests that followed June’s contested presidential poll.
