Police in Canada shot dead a man after the hotel he was staying in called them to carry out a welfare check, providing yet another tragic example of what can often happen when you call cops to deal with a disturbed individual.
Staff at the Super 8 Motel in Calgary called the cops after the 27-year-old man was witnessed behaving erratically.
The police report states that officers went to the man’s room and attempted to gain entry with a motel key, but found the door locked on the chain from the inside.
The man inside was described as agitated and in need of medical attention. He refused officers access to the room. After calling EMS, the cops opted to kick down the door and go in guns drawn, for some unfathomable reason.
One officer tased the man after he allegedly threatened the cops with a syringe. The taser did not subdue the man, and the decision was taken by another officer to shoot him five times. He died shortly thereafter in the room.
“I think we would all expect that these are very traumatic incidents. None of us come to work thinking we’re going to be involved in something like this. Specifically, I haven’t spoken to the officer, but we would have whatever care available to these officers who were involved. These are traumatic incidents for all of us,” said Calgary Police Chief Paul Cook.
An investigation is under way.
Despite being called to check on and ensure the man’s safety, the police in this situation needlessly distressed the individual then killed him when he reacted.
Unfortunately this is not an isolated case.
Experts have expressed concern that cops are simply not trained to deal with such situations.
