The latest erosion of due process has just been proposed in Texas — allowing the police to charge you with a crime and then charge your credit card on the spot.

It brings to mind Lysander Spooner’s comparison of a highway robber to the government. But it also moves us another step farther from trial by jury and its most important function — jury nullification.

It also paves the way for automatic fines being assessed and debited instantly, eliminating not only the court, but the cop.
