Packs are being stolen in bulk before taking it home where it has a tangible value as currency – particularly in Romania where it often given as change in shops.

In Shropshire alone, police have revealed how supermarkets are being robbed of chewing gum, with branches in Shrewsbury, Telford, Market Drayton and Bridgnorth all falling victim of significant thefts since early summer.

Constable David Walton, a police officer in Shrewsbury, today urged county supermarket bosses to be on their guard.
