While multiple reports in the U.S. this week claimed First Daughter Ivanka Trump was booed during a W20 speech in Berlin, German newspaper Bild asserts no such booing happened.
Amid an answer about paid leave during the women’s summit Tuesday, the president’s daughter was also asked about her father’s past attitudes toward women and how they related to women’s empowerment.
“Sadly, the United States is the only developed country in the world that doesn’t have a paid leave policy for the benefit of families, so that is something that I’m very, very proud of my father’s advocacy long before he came into the presidency, but during the campaign including in the primaries, he’s been a tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive. In the new reality of a dueling…” Ivanka manages to say before being interrupted by another speaker who addresses an audience reaction.
According to Bild, “At this point, there was some unrest in the audience. There was no booing or heckling at all, however.”
Ivanka goes on to say: “I’ve certainly heard the criticism from the media and that’s been perpetuated, but I know from personal experience, and I think the thousands of women who have worked with and for my father for decades, when he was in the private sector, are testament to his belief and solid conviction in the potential of women and their ability to do the job as well as any man.”
Despite Bild’s interpretation, CNN reported, “The audience interrupted Trump with hissing and boos during a discussion on paid leave when she began describing her father as an advocate for women.”
Other papers also reported that the businesswoman was “booed.”
Even some mainstream reporters claimed Ivanka was booed.
The crowd audibly rumbled, booed when Ivanka mentioned her father's support of women.

The German paper called out several U.S. mainstream media outlets for alleging the crowd had reacted negatively toward Ivanka.
“The alleged hostility toward Ivanka during her visit to Berlin was a lead headline at US outlets such as ABC, CNN, and Fox, along with several major newspapers.”
Despite the audience reaction, and considering the aggressive line of questioning, Ivanka “reacted with confidence,” Bild notes.
In fact, “Many people were surprised by Ivanka Trump’s performance in Berlin. Contrary to the stereotype, the daughter of the US President made a sophisticated and level-headed impression at the panel discussion with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, and head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde. The glamorous White House ambassador also cleverly handled a controversial issue.”
