No one seems to be sure whether a petition filed on the website to ban ‘Oktoberfest’ in Germany because it offends Muslims is genuine, a piece of dark satire, or a stunt by anti-immigrant right-wingers.

The petition, which has been signed by almost 500 supporters states;

Dear City council of Munich,

I am writing this letter to bring to your attention something that I and many Muslims believe is unfair and requires attention. I would like to inform you that the Oktoberfest is an Intolerant and Anti-Islamic event. We tried to ignore the event, but there too many Un-Islamic acts done at the Oktoberfest. Such as alcohol consumption, public nudity etc.

We understand that the Oktoberfest is a yearly German tradition, but we, Muslims, can not tolerate this Un-Islamic event, because it offends us and all Muslims on the earth. We are requesting the immediate cancellation of the upcoming Oktoberfest event.

We also believe that the Oktoberfest might also offend all the Muslim refugees coming from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan. The cancellation of the Oktoberfest event will help refugees not to forget their Islamic history. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Morad Almuradi

Author Richard Dawkins shared the link via Twitter in an effort to find out whether the petition was fake or not.

After someone responded that the petition was so ridiculous it had to be satire, Dawkins responded, “Agreed. But ridiculous is exactly what we unfortunately have come to expect of religious killjoys.”

Another possibility is that the petition, which is attributed to someone from the Netherlands called Morad Almuradi, was actually started by right-wing activists to try and smear Muslims as part of the backlash to Germany’s announcement that it would accept 800,000 migrants before the end of the year.

“I am signing this as a PROTEST against the Islamification of Germany by Muslims. They refuse to assimilate and integrate,” remarks one respondent to the petition.

Illustrating the tension that the migrant influx has generated, an image making the rounds again since it was first spotted back in June is this banner that was photographed hanging from a motorway bridge in Sindelfingen, Germany.

The banner reads, “Your children will pray to Allah or die.”

As with the case of the petition, nobody is clear on whether the banner was put there by Islamic extremists or by anti-immigrant Germans.

What we know for certain is that Germany is already making concessions so as not to offend Muslim migrants. As we reported last week, a school in Germany which turned over its nearby gymnasium to house migrants is warning girls not to wear shorts or skirts so as not to provoke “attacks”.
