A local father has started a petition to push the Albuquerque Public School District to get rid of all the artificial turf sports fields.
Glenn Sveum’s daughter Aspen is a freshman at Manzano High School, and she is a varsity soccer goalkeeper. Sveum says he’s always had concerns about his daughter’s injuries from playing soccer on the turf. But then he saw an NBC News investigation that showed the growing call for more research into whether the rubber particles in the turf are linked to cancer.
That’s when he decided to start a petition to replace all the turf fields in the District with real grass.
“Someone kicks the field or the ball bounces, you see little clouds of debris pop up,” Sveum said. “That is recycled rubber, recycled tires…known carcinogens.”
