The FBI recently announced it will add animal abuse to its yearly tracking statistics.

The cases will be tracked in the Uniform Crime Report, or UCR.

Agent Marshall Stone with the FBI in Knoxville explained that the new tracking system does not mean that the FBI will start prosecuting animal abuse cases.

“We’re not creating a new federal statute for that offense,” Stone explained. “We’re just adding it into the UCR system system so that local and state agencies will begin reporting that information to the FBI, and we can include it in the Uniform Crime Reports.”
