Four more fragments that could be human remains of 9/11 victims have been unearthed since Friday at the former Fresh Kills landfill, bringing to 71 the total number of fragments recovered since sifting resumed on April 1.
Three new fragments were unearthed on Tuesday and one potential human remain last Friday. Those fragments were added to 67 unearthed since the current operation began, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner’s office.
After potential remains are collected at the landfill they are sent to an anthropology lab in Manhattan. In turn, anthropologists examine, photograph and assign a case number to the remains before they are sent to a forensic biology lab for possible extraction of DNA profiles, said Ms. Borakove.
