On Friday the media reported U.S. intelligence knew about a plot to take down Russian Metrojet Flight 9268 prior to the crash of the plane in the Sinai.

NBC News:

[An] intercept picked up a signal from an ISIS-affiliated group in the Sinai Peninsula before Metrojet Flight 9268 went down. The communications warned of “something big in the area,” but didn’t specifically mention a plane, officials said.

An adviser familiar the U.S. intelligence said the call was made between members of Wilayat Sinai, which a U.S. official said was one of the “most potent” branches of ISIS.

Left unmentioned is the fact that Wilayat Sinai, aka Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) or the Champions of Jerusalem, has denied it is affiliated with the Islamic state.

“The statement spread in the media about our alleged allegiance to the Muslim caliphate is not ours, everyone should be careful and only take news from our main sources,” a post on the group’s Twitter account declared in November, 2014.

Regardless of this statement, the media continues to report ABM has sworn allegiance to ISIS.

Moreover, it is reported that ABM is linked to al-Qaeda although the two groups have not indicated they are working together.

The linkage is based on a comment allegedly made in January 2014 by Ayman al-Zawahiri about “our people in the Sinai.”

Others believe ABM is associated with Hamas. This assertion is based on remarks by Egyptian Major General Ahmad Abd al-Halim.

Finally, the Muslim Brotherhood has denied any connection to ABM. The denial followed a comment by Refaat Saïd, the leader of Tagammu, an Egyptian socialist party.

“Dr. Mohammed Morsi himself imported the organization of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis and placed it in the Sinai. Morsi released many of its members from prison so they could carry out terror attacks in the Sinai region to take him back to power,” Saïd declared.

Morsi, the first democratically elected head of state in Egyptian history, was removed from office by army chief General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Morsi is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

It has yet to be determined what brought down Metrojet Flight 9268 and who might be responsible, but this has not prevented the establishment and its corporate media from cobbling together a narrative affixing blame to the Islamic State ahead of any definitive conclusion.

The largely fictional war waged by the United States against ISIS in Syria and Iraq is being used as cover to continue the covert war against Syria and the al-Assad government.

Russia’s targeting of jihadists the U.S. insists are “moderate” poses a serious threat to that effort.

Blaming ISIS for the downing of Metrojet Flight 9268—despite the fact there are questions about ABM’s connection to the Islamic State—creates the illusion that Russia is targeting the wrong people in Syria and its failure to concentrate wholly on ISIS has deadly consequences for innocent Russians.
