Congratulations, Mr. Hirschhorn, for your Online Journal article, 9/11 mind swell, in which you manage to straddle both sides of the 9/11 Truth Movement, both complimenting it and at the same time planting a knife firmly in its back.
|Perhaps the black-suited bullet-proof vested shock troops of police with their burp guns would scare you away, or the sharp-shooters from the rooftops, or the choppers flying back and forth overhead.|
In fact, in your first two paragraphs we get a sense of your duplicity. First you say, “As we approach the eighth anniversary of 9/11 consider this paradox. In the post 9-11 years, the scientific evidence for disbelieving the official government story has mounted incredibly. And the number of highly respected and credentialed professionals challenging the official story has similarly expanded.” All well, true and good, but then you unsheathe the blade…
“Yet, to the considerable disappointment of the international 9/11 truth movement [which would be who, you?], the objective fact is that there are no widespread, loud demands for a new government-backed 9/11 investigation. The 9/11 truth movement is the epitome of a marginalized movement, one that never goes away despite not achieving truly meaningful results, which in this case means replacing official lies with official truth. What has gone wrong?”
What has gone wrong, aside from “true believers like you” is that the 911 Truth Movement has asked the world to believe what is for many “unspeakable,” let alone unbelievable. That the US Government was party to making 9/11 an inside job and responsible along with several allied governments, the Saudis, Pakistan and Israel, for executing the horrific events of that day. For a country, that can barely deal with the word “socialism” in regards to Single-payer healthcare, 9/11 Truth is a poison pill, a confession that its government like Heidi has lied bold-facedly, no, murderously to its citizens. Or as Al Gore might say, 911 is “an inconvenient truth.”
Secondly, 70,000 signatures were raised in New York City to put on our ballot so a proposal for a new 9/11 investigation. Yet the NYC CAN petition was rejected by the City Clerk on Friday, July 24th, a week ago, certifying less than the minimum of 30,000 qualified signatures of electors. This benchmark, according to the Clerk’s office was not met. A ‘qualified elector’ is a registered New York City voter who was eligible to vote in the last election. According to the letter sent by the Clerk to the City Council, the NY Board of Elections validated 26,003 signatures and invalidated 24,664, leaving 1,333 that were not certified.
At a hearing scheduled for Monday, August 3rd, before a Supreme Court Justice, the plaintiffs, representing tens of thousands of concerned New Yorkers who support a new 9/11 investigation, will formally raise their request for an independent review of the Board of Elections findings. If granted by the presiding Justice, a re-validation of the petition signatures by an independent special referee will follow.
In addition to the requirement to reach the threshold of 30,000 qualified electors, the petition itself must comply with New York Municipal Home Rule Law and relevant Election Laws. The City Clerk maintains the Petition fell short in several areas but it should be emphasized that this is the legal opinion of the Corporation Counsel, the City of New York’s top lawyer, and will be challenged in court by lawyers for the five plaintiffs.
Legal advisors to the plaintiffs believe that the legal objections raised by the Corporation Counsel are specious and should be set aside, however considering the political implications and official opposition to the proposed Commission, obtaining approval for placing the referendum question on the ballet itself will be fraught with difficulty and challenge each step of the way. So, inconvenient truths do not play well, even in New York.
The deeper, psychological truth is that this inconvenient 9/11 Truth is one that has to reform, reshape one’s thinking on a very profound level of how American government works. In this process, it immediately hits the wall of what in an Online Journal article I called America’s cognitive dissonance. To quote the opening paragraphs (though I think you should read it all)…
“Cognitive dissonance: writer James Atherton calls it ‘a psychological phenomenon which refers to the discomfort felt at a discrepancy between what you already know or believe, and new information or interpretation. It therefore occurs when there is a need to accommodate new ideas, and it may be necessary for it develop so that we become ‘open’ to them.’ It’s that queasy feeling that rises often in your gut online and screams, ‘I DON’T BELIEVE THAT!’
“It’s what happens ‘if someone is called upon to learn something that contradicts what they already think and know — particularly if they are committed to that prior knowledge — they are likely to resist the new learning. Even Carl Rogers recognized this. Accommodation is more difficult than Assimilation, in Piaget’s terms,’ writes Atherton.
“And — counter-intuitively, perhaps — if learning something has been difficult, uncomfortable, or even humiliating enough, people are less likely to concede that the content of what has been learned is useless, pointless or valueless. To do so would be to admit that one has been ‘had,’ or ‘conned.’ Folks, could that be anyone you know? Well, give them some understanding.
“It’s what one brilliant reader wrote to me after reading my Lobotomizing America article. “The true lobotomizing took place in the populace in their K-12 schooling. Now, excruciating cognitive dissonance effectively protects all but the most hardened skeptics from seeing and critically interpreting what our dear leaders have done and are continuing to do.
”People do not want to believe the truth. Unfortunately, I believe those of us who want to expose the truth must have something viable, palpable, and feel-good enough to substitute for what we try to take away from people: Their false notions of or preferred ignorance of what is really happening.”
Yes, “their false notions or preferred ignorance of what is really happening,” is at the core of it, even with highly educated individuals. You chew on that a while Mr. Hirschhorn while we return to one of your knife-thrusts…
“Akin to the definition of insanity [no less], the hallmark of entrenched but marginalized movements is that they continue to pursue exactly the same strategy and tactics that have failed to produce solid results. They indulge themselves with self-delusion, defensive thinking and acting as if the world at large must surely and finally wake up, see the light and embrace the Truth. Years and, potentially, decades go by, but this quixotic status quo remains embedded, as if set in intellectual concrete. There is no brain tumor to blame. Nor any mass hypnosis of true believers to prove. There is just monumental disinterest among the dominant culture, political establishment and the broad public that is far more engaged with other issues, problems and movements.
“The 9/11 truth movement, at best, gets meager public attention when it is derided and insulted, used as an example of persistent conspiratorial insanity.”
[efoods]These two paragraphs are among the most vicious comments I’ve ever seen about the 9/11 Truth Movement. And what is the “self-delusion,” you refer to above, Mr. Hirschhorn? Is it that our continued belief that Americans, given enough information, will be able to absorb 9/11’s difficult truth? Is it less that our “defensive thinking and acting as if the world at large must surely and finally wake up,” that that we have continued our work relentlessly for eight years to get an incredibly difficult message out?
I spent 25 years as a writer/creative director in the advertising business and several in Public Relations. I will tell you that 9/11 Truth is not an “easy sell,” for all the reasons mentioned and those to come.
As for years going by, 47 years have passed since JFK was assassinated supposedly by a lone gunmen, when ample evidence points to the CIA, the Mafia, the Defense Industry, Lyndon Johnson, and Big Oil. Are you still on that page with lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald and his old Italian army bolt action rifle, trying to get off his three shots in eight seconds? Are you still dancing to Arlen Spector’s “magic bullet” theory, as it zimmed and zoomed through JFK and Governor John Connelly’s bodies? I wouldn’t be surprised if you were.
Time passes, and concrete forms around the mythologies of the US government for many, but not for those who have read, studied, made the effort on behalf of the nation to understand their truths driving its policies/ And, as to 9/11 Truth “getting meager attention” and being “used as an example of persistent conspiratorial insanity,” the people who propound those statements are often the closest to the calumny, and for obvious reasons. How about you, Mr. Hirschhorn? Have you considered telling your story to Fox Five and Rupert Murdoch? I’m sure they’d love to write “9/11 Truther discredits movement.” Well, you’ve already done it, of course after you set up your 9/11 Truth credentials…
“Make no mistake; I concluded a few years back, after using my professional engineering and materials science background to study the evidence, that the official government story is a lie. As a former full professor of engineering, I firmly believe that elements of the US government were involved with contributing to (not just allowing) the 9/11 tragedy, but that does not necessarily eliminate the role of those terrorists publicly blamed for the events. Science, logic, evidence and critical thinking told me this.”
Alas, I think you doth protest too loudly. If your professional background has helped you reach the conclusion “that elements of the US government were involved with contributing to not just allowing the 9/11 tragedy,” then why would it “eliminate the role of those terrorists publicly blamed for the events?” It might adjust their role. For instance, the terrorists themselves were trained in military bases in Florida and were used as “patsies.” Also a number of their identities were stolen from others residing in Muslim states.
Take a look at Daniel Hopsicher’s brilliant book, Welcome to Terrorland—Mohamed Atta and the 9-11 Cover Up in Florida. Visit his website, http://www.madcowprod.com/. It may add something to your infinite wisdom.
As you say, “Who should we blame for the failure of the 9/11 truth movement to fix the historical record and, better yet, identify those in the government who turned 9/11 into an excuse for going to war, getting them indicted, prosecuted, and punished for their murderous acts?” It seems to me adequate blame has been fixed on the Bush/Cheney administration, Donald Rumsfeld and the Pentagon, NORAD, and many others.” Yet, here comes your mind-boggling oversimplification…
“It is too easy to blame the mainstream media and political establishment for refusing to demand and pursue a truly comprehensive and credible independent scientific and engineering investigation. President Obama with his tenacious belief in looking forward, not backward, exemplifies a national mindset to avoid the painful search for truth and justice that could produce still more public disillusionment with government and feed the belief that American democracy is weak at best, and delusional at worst.”
“It’s too easy to blame the mainstream media?” When was the last real exposition of 9/11 Truth have you seen on mainstream media? Did you see Loose Change there? Have you seen David Ray Griffin’s many books discussed there? Have you seen Alex Jones there? Have you seen any bit of Mike Romero’s amazing website, What Really Happened discussed there? Where have you been Mr. Hirschhorn? 9/11’s inconvenient truth has been systemically “marginalized” by the mainstream media and for obvious reasons. They are owned by large holding companies with connections to the government as suppliers, or for broadcasting licenses: GE owns NBC and supplies electronic systems for US airplanes; or they are entertainment mainstays like Disney which owns ABC, and does not want its image tarnished talking 9/11 Truth.
But you go on to say, “Marginalized movements always face competition for public attention. There are always countless national issues and problems that feed new movements and distract the public. There have been many since 9/11, not the least of which was the last presidential campaign and then the painful economic recession, and now the right-wing attacks on health care reform. The 9/11 truth movement illustrates a total failure to compete successfully with other events and movements.” You are a conscious master of half-truths, Mr. Hirschhorn.
Yes, marginal movements face competition for public attention, but 9/11 Truth has not been ignored as it has brilliantly competed with other public events and movements. There has been an incredible outflow of material from 9/11 Truth. Internet use has soared and newspapers are declining as are network media sales. There is a high awareness of 9/11 and its issues. The problem is not competition, but our nemesis “Cognitive Dissonance,” that halts the spread of 9/11 Truth, just as mainstream media still crank out versions of the lone-gunman theory every anniversary of JFK’s death to concretize its false truth.
Now you move to an ad hominem criticism of 9/11 Truth, which is strangest of all…
“The second explanation for failure is that the truth movement itself is greatly to blame. It has been filled with nerdish, ego-centric and self-serving activists (often most interested in pushing their pet theory) unable to pursue strategies designed to face and overcome ugly, challenging realities. The truth movement became a cottage industry providing income and meaning for many individuals and groups feeding the committed with endless websites, public talks, videos, books and paraphernalia. They habitually preach to the choir. Applause substitutes for solid results. In particular, it embraces the simplistic (and obviously ineffective) belief that by revealing technical, scientific and engineering facts and evidence the public and political establishment would be compelled to see the light. Darkness has prevailed.”
“Darkness has prevailed” because there are “endless websites, public talks, video, books and paraphernalia… it embraces the simplistic (and obviously ineffective) belief that by revealing technical, scientific and engineering faces and evidence the public and political establishment would be compelled to see the light.” Are you insane? This is a total contradiction from your statement a few paragraphs earlier that the 9/11 movement was not adequately competing for audience share. Some people are swayed by technical arguments, others by visual evidence, others by logical discourse, etcetera, young people by DVD’s, with hip-hop music, youthful voices, not outsize rhetoric by clowns like yourself.
In fact, I’d like you to come with me down to Ground Zero on 9/11/2009, see and meet the thousands of young people who come from all over the world to march, inter-mingle their intelligence, and learn to talk truth to power. Perhaps the black-suited bullet-proof vested shock troops of police with their burp guns would scare you away, or the sharp-shooters from the rooftops, or the choppers flying back and forth overhead. You truly get the sense of being in a city occupied by your own government. And after all this bullshit is said and done, that’s the real deal, pal, the unrelenting intimidation of Americans by the government.
You must surely remember the PATRIOTACTS, which just about trashed our Constitutional rights to speak out. You remember of course the suspension of Habeas Corpus, no proof needed to imprison you. You remember torture, water-boarding initiated by the Bush government and Obama’s unwillingness to really go after Bush and Cheney for it. You remember the NSA’s aimless spying on every American with a phone or a computer? You’re living in a goddamned police state. And that’s why the rest of the sheep don’t want to talk 9/11 Truth, the same reason Hitler blamed the burning of the Reichstag on some certifiably crazed communist, who was later beheaded.
Nor did Hitler come out and tell the Germans how many Jews he was gassing every day at the camps, how many women and children were being carted away in railroad box cars. Do you think he wanted that to be the nightly news—or rather another rant from himself on the virility, strength, and indefatigable strength of the Third Reich? Where do you think George Bush learned it all? His grandfather Prescott underwrote the financing of the Third Reich, yes, Prescott Bush and father-in-law, George Herbert Walker, using Brown Harriman Brothers as their base (the latter still in business) along with Union Banking and Thyssen Munitions. They were put out of business by FDR under the Trading With The Enemy Act in 1942, while George Herbert Walker Bush was being trained for the US Navy.
In fact, for this ugly piece of writing against 9/11 Truth you should no longer be taken seriously as a 9/11 advocate. Whether you know it or not, you are trading with the enemy. And by the way, go peddle your book, your little cottage industry, Delusional Democracy somewhere else.
Lastly, you quoted this ugly piece from James Bone of the London Times, describing the 911 Truthers as a “gruesome assortment of conspiracy theorists [that] insists that the attacks on the US of September 22, 2001, were an inside job. It is easy to mock this deluded gang of ageing hippies, anarchists and anti-semites.” And then you turn this rusty blade by saying, “Truthers continue to face a very steep uphill battle.”
This only concretizes my belief that you are a Judas for repeating that bit of Bone-headed yellow journalism. Therefore the uphill battle we face is ferreting out moles like you from our midst. This is a hit piece if ever I saw one. You have, sir, come out of the closet and identified yourself for what you really are: the enemy. May you suffer the consequences!
