Iranian Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan the Al-Alam news channel the United States was responsible for carrying out the 9/11 attacks as a pretext to invade the Middle East.
“These wars in the middle and these threats stem from a comprehensive American strategy,” Pourdastan said, according to a translation by the Middle East Media Research Institution (MEMRI).
“After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Americans felt that a new force was beginning to materialize, namely the union between Sunnis and Shias. The basis of this force was the blessed Islamic Revolution in Iran, this force is Islam, or the Islamic world,” the commander of Iran’s ground forces reportedly said.
“The first thing they did was to plan and carry out the events of 9/11, in order to justify their presence in Western Asia, with the goal of ruling it,” he said.
Pourdastan had earlier accused the US of creating the Islamic State, al-Nusra and Boko Haram terror groups.
“The ISIL, Boko Haram and al-Nusrah have been created in line with the US strategy of religion against religion, which seeks to impair the divine face of Islam,” Pourdastan said, the Iranian Fars news agency reported.
MEMRI is a Israeli propaganda organization that selectively translates materials from the Arab, Muslim and Iranian press allegedly demonstrating hostility toward Israel and Jews, according to SourceWatch, a wiki operated by Center for Media and Democracy.
MEMRI was co-founded by Meyrav Wurmser and Colonel Yigal Carmon, formerly of Israeli military intelligence. Wurmser is married to the influential neocon David Wurmser who served as Principal Deputy Assistant to the Vice President for National Security Affairs in the Office of Vice President Dick Cheney.
Remarks Arrive As Tension Between US and Iran Intensify
Pourdastan’s provocative comments arrive as Florida Senator Marco Rubio and other Republicans work to undermine a nuclear review bill in Congress following negotiations with Iran.
Rubio, a 2016 presidential candidate, wants to add an amendment to the bill that would demand Iran’s leadership publicly accepted Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. The proposal was earlier pushed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On Tuesday Iran Revolutionary Guard patrol boats fired shots at a commercial cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the Marshall Islands-flagged M/V Maersk Tigris.
On Friday the Iranians surrounded the the U.S.-flagged Maersk Kensington traveling through the strait.
Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren characterized Iran’s actions as “inappropriate” and criticized the warning shots.
Iran recalled an armada of ships headed toward Yemen after the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt entered the Persian Gulf on April 24. The United States accuses Iran of supporting the Houthi rebels who are under attack by a coalition of Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia.
