The Treasury Department imposed U.S. sanctions Oct. 12 on Iranian commercial airline Mahan Air for “secretly ferrying operatives, weapons and funds on its flights” for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

According to a Treasury statement, the airline provides financial, material and technological support specifically to the Guard’s Quds Force, the same organization that days before the Treasury announcement had been implicated in a plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States with the assistance of Mexican drug cartel Los Zetas.

“Following the revelation about the IRGC-QF’s use of the international financial system to fund its murder-for-hire plot, today’s action highlights further the undeniable risks of doing business with Iran,” said David S. Cohen, Treasury under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.
