The U.S. Labor Department reports that initial claims for unemployment benefits rose by 13,000 last week. It was the first increase in three weeks and the second in two months.
Initial claims for unemployment stood at a seasonally adjusted 462,000 last week, indicating that few employers are filling positions.
The national unemployment rate currently stands at 9.6 percent.
